Why can't Texas win?

Jul 29, 2021, 6:09 PM

Heard this discussion on talk radio this afternoon. The gist was: They have the most money, the finest facilities, talent rich state, huge fanbase, their own TV network. So, 2 questions:
1. Why couldn't they win in the Big 12?
2. If they couldn't win in the Big 12, why do they think they can win in the SEC?

No one gave the answer that I would give.

Why can't they win in the Big 12? Because they haven't hired the right coach. If they had hired Nick Saban or Dabo Swinney they would be winning.

They can't win in the Big 12 for the same reason Alabama couldn't win in the SEC when Mike Shula, Dennis Franchionne, et. al. were the coaches. They couldn't win in the Big 12 for the same reason Clemson couldn't win in the ACC with Tommy West or Tommy Bowden were the coaches.

Football, probably more than any other sport - including basketball, has one essential ingredient to be successful - a great coach.

Dabo didn't have the best facilities, most money, etc. when he was hired. But, he was a great coach. Same with Bobby Bowden at FSU.

If Steve Sarkesian is a great coach, then Texas will win. If he isn't, then moving to the SEC won't make Texas a winner.

Pretty good take IMHO. If Sarkisian doesn’t work out, maybe they can lure Mack Brown away from the tarholes.

Naw, it isn't the coaching. They've had good coaches.

It's the boosters and money men that wreak havoc on the staff and kids. Alabama got good because Saban let them know he was in charge. Mack Brown is a schmoozer and a politician, but he let them know he was in charge (until he stopped caring)

Texas needs the gravitas of a coach to tell everyone to back off and let them run the program as they see fit. No run arounds and outside pressures for the program. That is where it has failed the last decade.

Part of being a great coach is not only convincing the players to respect you and follow your rules, but also to convince the boosters and other "influencers" to follow your rules.

I remember the story when Rick Pitino took over at Kentucky, one of the first changes he made was no more boosters could fly on the plane with the team. And, his comment to the boosters was, "I want your money but not your two cents."

I guess Mack forgot to tell that to Joe Jamail and Red McCombs. Jamail even served as Brown’s personal attorney.

Power players at UTexas football are often divided into multiple factions with opposing viewpoints, each exercising their authority and influence on the program thus creating a tumultuous, counterproductive environment. Too many chiefs, not enough indians-

Nailed it. Oklahoma, Baylor (at times), OK State (at times and TCU (at times) have had better coaching even with B. Stoops letting nepotism get in the way of keeping his talented friend B.V.

It could be really simple-
the English department at Texas is no good!
They keep teaching them that there is an "I" in team.

It's leadership 101

we got lucky with Dabo and FSU got lucky with Bowden. These are generational leadership types. They don't grow them on trees.

Great post and observation.

They have a culture issue….
That talent can’t overcome…

The right coach will fix that …
So in a sense I agree with you….

They also can’t settle on a coach …long enough …
Tom Herman better or worse than Steve Sarkisian?
Or Charlie Strong? Who knows…
They’ve been searching since Mack left..

I don't agree that Saban or Swinney could win there. Texas to me is a lot like Auburn. Too many people think they know the best way to be good. Texas will struggle just like they have for a decade or more now

Drive. I don’t believe that boosters or NIL or transfer portal changes anything once the players get on the field and start to work.

The coach is the number one factor, then the players, then the ability to recruit the players (facilities, history, etc), and then NIL influences.

Spurrier, Bobby Bowden, dabo, bill snyder, and select others went to places where you “can’t win” and won big.

Texas needs better direction at the top. Darius Ian may be the one. Maybe not.

You’re right about the coaching. Texas is coming off of 2 failed experiments.

Charlie Strong.
Breakthrough minority hire = FAIL

Tom Herman.
Up-and-coming hot coordinator. Some success at Houston. Tries to act like a tough guy = FAIL

Not sure about Sarkisian. We’ll see. I have serious doubts.
