Who was the player from SC

Dec 18, 2022, 9:19 AM

Who left the state and played college football at Tampa? I think his name was Rice but not the one from Rock Hill who starred at Notre Dame. I saw him play in the Shrine Bowl and he was great. Probably forty plus years ago

Freddie Solomon.***

Right. Thanks. I’ve been trying to come up with name for hours. He was a great one

Recruitment led USC to leave ACC. USC objected to SAT requirement ACC set for all incoming freshmen.

I don’t know, but Tony Rice, that starred for ND, is from Woodruff, not Rock Thrill.

Used to go watch him play in The Big Sombrero...

My parents are from Sumter, so they always enjoyed supporting the hometown kid.

Freddie was a part of the last University of Tampa football team. They closed the program down in the 70s.

We used to hang out with Wally Richardson at the Jasmine mall. Hard to believe Sumter doesn’t produce more D1 players

Story goes 378 was made four lanes to get Freddie to Columbia quicker during recruitment. He didn't make high enough on college board to get in any NCAA school, thus Tampa.

Freddie Solomon had some good years as a receiver with the 49ers. Jim Rice, baseball HOFer from Anderson, was also on the Shrine Bowl team with Solomon.

I was at the Shrine Bowl when Solomon played QB for SC. NC couldn't stop him and SC had an easy win.
That might have been the same year that the SC kicker pretended to fall on the opening KO and wound up with the ball on an onsides kick. Used to be a really entertaining game.

on the play that resulted in Dwight Clark's "the catch", but he slipped and was well covered as Montana was scrambling.
