Robbie Caldwell is an easy and convenient target

for people who don’t want to accept the fact that Elliott and Dabo have gotten complacent on the offensive side of the ball.

Don’t get me wrong, our offensive line recruiting and development leave a lot to be desired if we aspire to be elite, but that isn’t just on Caldwell. Plus, it seems to me that the play calling and strategy adjustments could have been much better in real time and they weren’t. That’s not Caldwell’s doing.

I don’t think Dabo is a complacent personality. I am concerned that Elliott is. Regardless, I think our generational talent recently at QB and RB has lulled our staff into a false sense of security. Thankfully, I think we have great coaches and I believe they will figure it out.

I just thought I might take some heat off RC - your comments

are good

Sometimes I think our staff is really STUBBORN - they say they like to take whats given - which drives out use of RPO's and thus a little smaller and more agile O LINE ...........

I think there is something else outsides can't know

I know this

I would NOT want to be a team that has to PLAY THIS TEAM ...

our Defense is BIG BOY

I personally think the attitude of “taking what the defense gives us” is weak.

Sep 7, 2021, 9:52 PM

We should be dictating what we want to do.

Make the defense adjust.

Yes, we need to look for vulnerabilities in the defense, but we shouldn’t be allowing them to decide what we do.

Bottom line: how is our current offensive approach working out for us against elite teams? I’d say not too well lately.

you Have to have good oline play to dictate the tone...

Sep 7, 2021, 10:55 PM [ in reply to I personally think the attitude of “taking what the defense gives us” is weak. ]

Under 11 years of Caldwell we have been dependent on the passing game to open up the running. Caldwell doesn’t coach fundamentals. Our oline footwork and handwork pi ss poor fundamentally

Agreed. Every time I've heard " take what the defense gives us" over the past couple years, that basically boils down to "we can't run the ball on them so we have to air it out."

It sounds good on paper, but not establishing some kind of running game is rarely a path to success. It's time for this staff to get creative and gameplan around our defencies so that we can move the ball on the ground. Georgia kept two safeties back all night because they didn't need to play the run. That is a HUGE advantage. When the opposing coach casually mentions in the halftime interview that you've abandoned the run (in a tight ball game no less), that is a problem.

Well, Judge, IMO Robbie Caldwell has been a problem for quite some time (and I like him and respect him a lot as a person), but our OL is nowhere near elite. That said, TE has done nothing special to help rectify the Offense's shortcomings. My prayer is that all gets fixed, and we win another championship. Sadly, I don't think that happens unless some heads roll.

Re: Robbie Caldwell is an easy and convenient target

Sep 7, 2021, 11:21 PM

TE's have been non-factor since Jordan Leggett was here, OL are never developed to the elite level, Look at Mitch Hyatt, great talent but never was developed into a NFL type player. And the good ole QB position, Streeter is a good guy/good coach but has not been able to develop our great QB's and polish them off. We will truly see on if DJ is developed further by Streeter and Co. That's a challenge to the coaching staff.

I've said it for the last couple years. Our weakness as far as coaches go is Caldwell and Streeter. I am not throwing them under the bus but they are in the crosshairs for every critic out there. Our generational QB's, Receivers and Backs over the last 7 years have covered up our weaknesses from being exploited. Well, this year is different as we are not elite on the offensive side of the ball.

They all get paid good money to take the scrutiny of the critics so no sympathy this Clemson Tiger alumni and IPTAY supporter.

Sep 7, 2021, 11:31 PM

I am not dissing Jackson Carmen or Josh Simpson, those guys I hope can play in the NFL for a while. Josh is a hell of a good kid from Charleston and we need a few more like him. We can stand to improve the development of our OL during their time at Clemson though. That's my point....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

our Oline recruitment is fine, we’re pulling in 4 and 5 star guys...

Sep 7, 2021, 10:51 PM [ in reply to Robbie Caldwell is an easy and convenient target ]

Caldwell is the easy target because after 11 years we have had one good year of oline play, 2018. Even that year we were dependent upon the QB run. In 11 years we have not had good blocking for our running backs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He’s an easy target because he is failing.

Sep 7, 2021, 11:33 PM

For years our one major weakness has been the OLine.

The 2020 and 2021 recruiting classes had mostly 4 & 5 star OL recruits. The 2022 recruiting class currently has 4 & 5 star OL recruits. So this will be 3 recruiting classes in a row this coming January with almost every OL scholarship going to a 4 or 5 star recruit. Given that significant upgrade in talent how much longer do we continue to give this OL staff?

I’m willing to give them this year and next. But IMO if the situation does not significantly improve next season then changes need to be made! I mean, at some point you have to try making a change and when the quality of the recruit has improved significantly, but the product on the field has not, then heads need to roll.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sorry but I disagree.

Sep 7, 2021, 10:57 PM [ in reply to Robbie Caldwell is an easy and convenient target ]

Even when we had better playcalling and ran up-tempo the Oline was an issue. It has been an issue since the Danny Ford was booted. The last really good 0L we had was that 91 ACC championship team. Those were pretty much all Ford’s players. But it has clearly been the one weakness we have had under Dabo. At some point you have to recognize where the problem lies! We have been recruiting better at that position as well. That leaves only one thing. Coaching!

This is always the conundrum. Which comes first, the OC not calling the full playbook because the line is so bad, or the line is struggling because the OC is calling plays the defense already anticipates? I say it’s both based on watching the game as it develops. The line gets abused (no one can argue that) then Elliott abandons the run for a one dimensional passing offense without a mobile QB to extend plays while the line continues to get abused in pass protection. Notice the bad line play is always there, so I say it’s primarily the Oline.

My theory, based on previous years, will be validated once the line plays less talented Dlines and Elliott stays with a balanced run/pass offense.

Who really cares about the pulse thing though? I hardly ever post unless I get concerned because things seem to be going sideways. Usually I am content to just get on here every night and read what others have to say, so when I do post I probably tend to sound a little critical and may offend some sunshine pumpers. Fact remains, I know what team I have pulled for since I was old enough to know what a football was. Downvote me if you want.

Criticism is a good thing if it brings about positive change regardless what the sunshine pumpers think.
