Memo to every AD who hires a coach.

Nov 15, 2019, 2:37 PM

Take a lesson from Florida State.

Rule #1: Keep your mouth shut.

Have one presser announcing that the position is vacant and a search is underway. Then simply say, "The next time you will hear me speak is when I announce the new coach." Then, get up from the mike and walk away. Period.

Not long after Taggart was fired there were rumors that Bob Stoops was a candidate. the AD made the very bad decision to say, "He's on our list."

So, rumors have abounded since then. He's never coming to FSU. He might come to FSU but it would take a ton of money. He's in serious negotiations with FSU. All over the board.

Last night the internet was filled with "It's a done deal. He'll be announced maybe as early as tomorrow."

45 minutes ago the same source that said it was a done deal (Tallahassee Democrat, newspaper) reported that he is no longer a candidate. Things couldn't be worked out.

Now, assuming he isn't any longer a candidate, here is what FSU is now in:

No matter who they hire everyone, media and fans, will know he's the second choice. And, everyone will be comparing him to Bob Stoops. There is no way he can "win the presser." The cloud of "But, he's not Bob Stoops" will fill the room.

Rumors happen. All sorts of erroneous information abounds in every coaching search. The second worse thing an AD can do is try to answer all the rumors. The first worst thing he can do is publicly state "Coach X" is a candidate."

Now, the players - and many fans - are clamoring that we hire Odell Haggins, our long time assistant and current interim. "He's our own Coach O. Look at LSU. We can do the same."

I have no idea who we are gonna hire, but whoever it is will walk into an even worse situation than Willie left us. Coburn took a bad situation and decided, "Hey, it's not so bad. I can make it worse."

What do you mean "democratic media". This is a cheap shot. Not everyone needs to be ignorant. This thread is about football - stay with that. Not your politics.

Not to worry.

The Vols have set the bar so low that you guys could go on for another month before anyone could really be critical.

I think the coots will rival the Vols whenever they finally start the hiring process. Who'd want to go there?

Who do you think is in the lead for HC at FSU right now

If you forced me to guess....

Nov 15, 2019, 4:23 PM [ in reply to Who do you think is in the lead for HC at FSU right now ]

.... and remember, I said I have no idea, these are just guesses on my part.

The four "logical" candidates are: Matt Campbell, Mike Norvell, Mark Stoops and Dave Klaussen.

Odell is a wild card. I am hearing reports that he wants the job. I have no way of knowing if that is true.

Out of the box thinking, that I have seen some do, gives us the names Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin as possibilities.

Really out of the box thinking gives us the name Gus Malzahn.

If you forced me to pick one name and bet your house on it, I'd pick Mike Norvell. But, that's just a guess.

One last comment: We have hired a consulting firm. In the 20+ years I have followed the coaching carousel I have learned that sometimes those firms come up with a name that no one ever thought of.

Take a lesson from South Carolina.

Step #1: Closely watch every step of South Carolina's coaching search.

Step #2: Do the exact opposite.

If they hire a twice unsuccessful coach, then they deserve what they get. I support Odell. I just wonder if he is up to date on some things.

The locker room...and he's interested, when initially, he wasn't. FSU can't do worse and, at this point, he might can save some of the recruiting class.

The decision to hire Coburn as an AD was dumb...

Nov 15, 2019, 4:19 PM

to begin with. I think the FSU job is bad only bc the uncertainty of the president and the AD...not the best support system or culture to walk into. The football program by itself seems fine...just needs better coaching.

Who would you like to see as a coach? Who is realistic option?

So, you want him to hire Venables and Elliott? (Just kidding, just kidding.)

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you guys screwed up by missing out on Stoops

Nov 15, 2019, 5:49 PM

He would have been my first choice too. As long as you don't have to settled for your 4th choice, like the coots, you will be okay.

Clemson got our first choice.

Nov 15, 2019, 9:14 PM

how difficult and complicated so called smart people can make this world. If I’m the FSU AD, I call Jeff Scott tomorrow and offer him the job. Period. End of discussion. Sit back and watch him recruit the Hades out of the state of Florida.

Of course I don’t want him to leave, but he would be my man with full 100% support. Fawning over these recycled, expensive retreads is comical.
