USOC = NCAA ... Should Olympic Athletes Be Paid??

Just wondering who is getting all the tons of money being made by the Olympics? It seems to parallel the NCAA and Universities making billions off athletes which led to the changes we have today (like them or not).
It seems that the money should be going to the athletes and not some random IOC or whoever else it goes to. The idea of amateur athletes is over.

TeamUSA pays out bonuses. $37,500 for gold, $22,500 for silver and $15,000 for bronze. I know other countries do not pay out a bonus.

The US isn't the only country that pays bonuses to medalists. Some countries pay much more than we do.

Just like football, NO ONE is making these people compete in the Olympics, no one is making these kids play football. No one. They are free to get a job or pay for their education like all the rest of us.

I don't really care if Olympic athletes get paid, but being a professional football player is a career like any other. Football is their job, and playing college football is the only realistic path to the NFL. If people wanted college football to remain a true amateur sport, they should have started complaining decades ago when schools started signing big TV deals and paying huge salaries to everyone but the players themselves.

So thats flawed logic right out of the gate. These kids have other avenues with their future than professional sports that, by all metrics, is highly improbable.

making the NFL. It might not be a career, but I'd rather finish college with some money in the bank than being completely broke.

I agree with you to an extent. Playing college football is the only path to playing in the NFL. But that's not the only job the NFL has to offer. Back to that later. If you want to play basketball in the NBA, there are other paths. G-League or Europe. If you want to play baseball, you can go straight to the minors. The NFL has no minor league or some other type program. College is the only avenue. As far as reaping the benefits of their labor, every other degree program affords you the opportunity to reap the benefits of that degree AFTER the degree is awarded. How much is awarded Clemson University in the form of research grants where the student if paid directly for their labors? I would say very little if any at all. They thing that always gets left out of this "paying huge salaries to everyone but the players" discussion is the fact that yes, college football is big money. But rowing or swimming or track and field are not. How many scholarships is football footing the bill? How many of those kids would not being going to college otherwise? Representing Clemson on the playing field knowing full well this is probably the last time you'll be competing and then receiving a college education is a fair exchange.
If a kid wants a job in the NFL, any job, why not prepare them for it? This is where the NCAAA and subsequent schools have failed miserably. Why is there not a degree program for a career in professional sports? Classes in fitness and nutrition, coaching, marketing, financial management, communications, sociology, therapy, the combination of emphasis are endless. But no. We continually whine about players in basket weaving or mystical no-existing classes and how much they are being taken advantage of. Step up and face the reality! The chance of anyone making a career (any career) in their respective sport is around 2%. Not trying to be the killer of dreams here. But it is what it is. We have neglected and denied responsibility in that for far too long.

And to the guy that repeats “fair market value” what does that mean for the players that don’t see the field but get their brains knocked out in practice everyday. Do we say that the FMV is equal across the team or just the starters? Do we end up with guys sitting out because they do not believe they are getting FMV? What is FMV? Do they pay for their education, room and board and food like the rest of the student population? What about taxes?
Coaches may make a lot of money but are basically one bad season from being unemployed, and there are not a lot of coaches that make what I consider to be stupid money.
This will end in a #### show guaranteed.

I see no contradiction. I think that Olympic athletes should be paid. But also wondered what others thought. Treating athletes that generate billions of dollars in revenue in any sport, or combination of sports, as amateurs to keep from paying them and hoard all the money, is an idea whose time has come and gone.
