Who are least recruited who became CU and NFL stars?

May 31, 2022, 12:11 PM

Well the first one to come to mind is obvious…Hunter Renfro. How about T J Green and Grady Jarrett. I know there are others….who come to mind?

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

How about Ed Mcdaniel out of Batesburg-Leesville or Levon Kirkland who received the last scholarship we had the year he signed because he was a fall back after the guy we wanted didn't sign.

I spoke to Levon after a function in Greenville pre-covid and thanked him for coming to Clemson and helping make us what we are. He got a tear in his eye and looked down and thanked me.

Brian Dawkins

He was either the last or next to last offer in the 1992 Class!

Dawkins was am "add a player" to get Patrick Sapp to come to Clemson if I recall. Both were very good at Clemson but Dawkins was on another level in the NFL.

That’s why the first person he mentioned was Renfrow. Reading skills much?

Sorry, the OP stated "stars". Dodd was just drafted in the 1st round, but was never a star.

Not sure you would call him a star at either level, but Coty Sensabaugh was a throwaway scholarship that turned into a very good college corner and made a decent living in the NFL for a handful of years. I believe he had no other FBS offers when he signed with Clemson.

I think of him every time we pick up a late commitment with fewer stars after we miss out on a more highly recruited player. When he was offered the comments on this board were very critical. He may not have been an NFL star but he was successful at the NFL level and very successful for us.

Grady Jarrett

I don't think he was recruited really at all, more sold himself when given a chance. I think the story goes was that he was picked out at a camp and Dabo offered him a spot, kinda against some opinions. He only had 2-3 offers (Western Kentucky or Bufflo was the competition at that time). Recruited, not really, not even at Clemson other than Dabo.

The day Kirkland visited so did John Johnson . I asked Tommy West if he had gotten any commitments at the basketball game that night. Tommy told me that kirkland had committed as a lb . I just knew that he was a take because Johnson was going to Georgia. I saw and talked with Dawkins at a basketball game with Rick Stockstill tall skinny kid really thought he was a take because of Sapp. Those were the days in recruiting when you wanted the last week of January as your vist.
