"FORT WASHINGTON, Md. -- The power players in collegiate athletics enacted historic change Saturday at the NCAA convention, passing the first package of autonomous legislation, headlined by a full cost-of-attendance measure that will supplement student-athletes' scholarships with unprecedented dollars.
Stipends, determined by institutions under federally created guidelines, have been estimated at $2,000 to $4,000 annually. They are designed to cover the cost-of-living expenses that fall outside athletic scholarships."

While at Clemson, an Army ROTC full scholarship

Jan 18, 2015, 6:09 AM

provided a $90-a-month extra stipend for incidental expenses not covered by the scholarship.

My Dad, ever the pragmatist, cautioned, "Use the money wisely...cause I won't ever see you needing to call home asking for spending money!" Lesson learned immediately.

Thus, I've long supported the idea of the stipend and believe the monkey will be on the athletes' backs to use it carefully.

The ruling regarding the four-year scholarship will provoke an outcry, no doubt, for the common complaint will be against those athletes who fail to perform, other than for medical reasons. Now, that monkey will be on the staffs' and team members' backs to motivate, discipline and teach, perhaps, in that order. It will also demand that the staffs more carefully consider a recruit's history of performance and personal behavior, opting to err on the side of caution.

What does that mean for recruits? High School athletes with some history of problems - not to cite anyone in particular - may find themselves quickly eliminated from consideration by the Power 5. Hence, were my son involved, my words would be simple: "Keep your behind on the straight and narrow, keep up your grades...and prepare yourself for life without ole Daddeo's money!" lol

Re: While at Clemson, an Army ROTC full scholarship

The number of players on scholarship that under perform, get into trouble or any other
reason are asked not to be a member of the team should be very few.
Schools have the money to provide those players an education with out having to carry
them as being counted towards the NCAA 85.
Not long ago Clemson recruited a player extended a full scholarship to him,
he got hurt during his last days of playing high school football.
Never practiced or played 1 snap of football for Clemson.
Clemson (Dabo) honored the scholarship, he got his education and degree from Clemson.
Was never counted by The NCAA as one of the 85 players on scholarship.
Best I can remember he did run down The Hill on his last Home Game.

With this being voted on there should be a strictly enforced amount
any player can receive not a range amount that way no school could entice
a recruit more than they already do.
Some schools are able to provide more money than others.
A standard amount being $100 to $4,000 should be voted on and enforced.

Good points. The article indicates an estimated payment

between $2,000 and $4,000, and I do agree with you that it has to be narrow and capped, allowing for COL adjustments.

COL??? lol....pizzas and beer dont go up in price too much. I got a 1.7% raise this year on my pension. Factor in that our health insurance went up and taxes went up, Im now getting $12 less in my pension than last year. AFTER the raise. What a system.

Do away with scholarships to play sports

Jan 18, 2015, 10:16 AM

Pay the player fair amount for their service in each sport
Let them pay for all they get now for free- room, board, travel, trainer, weight room, clothes
Let them pay taxes on the money
Live on what they get paid or get part time jobs like others on here
If they want to get the cake and eat it have them pay for it.
Life is not like some in DC would have you think, Nothing Is Free
