Which is better for recruiting

Jan 11, 2022, 4:57 PM

Dabo has always showed a deep commitment to players he recruits by not taking players once a position fills up. Due to this policy and the rise of Clemson's name recognition we started offering fewer players because our chances of landing the true upper echelon increased. So which do you prefer?

1) We continue our current model, targeting only the top 1-2 for each spot and waiting late in the process to find out if we land them. Possibly filling misses with back up offers.

2) We expand our net to target 3-5 for each spot. Our class fills up a little earlier with players who want to be Tigers and we may miss out on a few five stars who wanted to wait.

I personally think #2 gets us players who fit Clemson's culture and want to be Tigers even if they are not 5*. Plus in the "new normal" of NIL and the transfer portal we may have a chance to get back in it with a 5* player due to players leaving early.

Does not matter what Tnet or I think. It only matters what Dabo thinks. Think I will go with Dabo's decision whatever that may be.

A little confused why either would post under this thread. By that opinion then nothing would get posted on tigernet except the front page stories.

Of course no one thinks Dabo is going to read it and say I think I'll do that. It's a good discussion subject.

To be fair most of the front page stories are about a Finebaum opinion.

Oh, that's too funny. Actually, @colberttiger and others post some good stories and tweets. Plus I love the x & o discussions, as well as the recruiting news.

Dabo is very tied to Tigernet opinions. We fussed about Tommy Bowden’s small helmet paws and Dabo immediately fixed it. We fussed about the end zone font not being historic block lettering- he fixed it. I could go on. Dabo may not read us but he has his finger on the Tigernet pulse! Haha.

Agree and I think Dabo will trend a little more towards option 2 than the last three years. It was great in 2020 but has left a few holes the last two seasons due to the changing culture in college sports.

I was interested in the fan reaction when we are out of the running for a 5* early on because we filled up at a position.

We are either going to have to start offering more players or using the portal. There simply is going to be more turnover regardless of how we address it.

Agree. If we're recruiting as in the past, we know there will be juniors that declare. Students are getting a degree in 3 years so if they're not starting, they'll hit the portal.

I agree with having schollys for walk ons and pwo but if for whatever the reason, the stars aligned and we have some more stay, then the w/o May have to wait or get a 1/2 scholly.

Like it or not, until the rules change, we have to adapt. Every team does.

Meant to add I'd rather go that direction than have to rely on the portal. As you stated, we're not going to offer someone we don't want or doesn't fit.

Expand it if we see we can't compete for a top few class in the nation due to the NIL. Otherwise I say we keep it the same.

We will know a lot after the next class whether we need to change things.

It’ll be too late at that point

Jan 11, 2022, 7:20 PM

Either we sign 25+ next class and have changed our roster management strategy or we sign 20 or under and it’s a clear sign we’re going to keep throwing scholarships away and be razor thin in certain areas. If you wait until the class of 2024 to make that change and continue to not go hard after portal players we will have issues for years.

Re: It’ll be too late at that point

I am saying even if we want to sign 25 we may find that even if we offer 50 more guys than normal that our quality may be down due to the NIL. Are we going to able to compete with that? Maybe even we just get 20 they may not be up to snuff due to the NIL,,,,don't know.

In this new landscape

Jan 11, 2022, 7:05 PM

Choice 2 is the way to go. Those IMG decommits really hurt us because we stopped recruiting so many kids. Times have changed. Commitment isn’t the same now. Our only 2023 commit, a WR, is letting the new Miami staff recruit him hard and saying very nice things. We need to have a plan B when a “commit” isn’t really committed. It has to be a two way street and an honest convo. If you commit and refuse contact with other schools and promise to stay no matter the NIL offer, that’s one thing. These players are no longer doing that.

I prefer 2. It’s what we’ve won with I the past. I rather not go 10-3 with 5 ??
