Left tries to stop Right @ Clemsom

Mar 30, 2021, 6:09 AM

Now next week rally moved to accommodate
bigger crowd in The Littlejohn Coliseum

I might not like or agree with what you say
but I will do all I can to make sure you can
say it

Tomi Lahren scheduled to speak and libs tried to get it shut down. Apparent interest grew and to accommodate crowd size has been moved to LJ.

Things are getting out of hand at Clemson. It's one thing to demonstrate and/or protest, but another altogether to try to shut people up because you don't agree with their point of view. To display intolerance while promoting tolerance seems the apex of hypocrisy to me.

Don't think all of us "lefties" support this. Personally, I really hate the PC culture on college campuses. Shutting down speakers you disagree with is ridiculous. And their justification is that "their words are violent and cause me pain." Sadly, this is a common belief in the social science departments that are dominated overwhelmingly by liberals. I don't like Tomi, but I wouldn't try to prevent her from speaking on campus. I just wouldn't attend the event.

Mar 30, 2021, 9:49 AM

Y'all are hilarious.

The "left" didn't try and anything. Sure there is a change.org thing (lol) but that is the weakest thing imaginable. There are petitions to demand "head and shoulders" to create a body wash by the name "knees and toes" and even to shut down change.org. It does not work, lol. Reacting to a "change.org" is the definition of a snowflake.

Y'all just need to stop this "libs are evil" ans "stick it to the left" crap because it hurts small government policy needs as it just make the left seem more reasonable. Sure, it sounds great to your base but it just alienates anyone that can think critically about policy. Because when you seek the reins of power with the goal to "stick it to someone" that is by far the definition and the worse sin of government abuse. That becomes anti-conservative.

Go back and read William Buckley and know the difference and importance to separating the right form the kooks, know the flaws of (a) university, and knowing that true conservatives yell "stop".

Re: Just playing by the new rules that the left created...

Mar 30, 2021, 11:08 AM

Disagree on that front - Newt really started the dismantling of civil governance... and really ramping up partisan politics (aka never other politics) - he ended the days of 'boy scout politics' or the gentleman code. Effective but that win at any costs... costs a lot. The former president was "norm breaker" person and you saw that peak with an attempt to overthrow congress.

Conservatives were supposed to stand the tide against anarchy and leftist chaos, not join them, now they have surpassed the chaos of a leftist mindset. Now it seems that the centralism dems have the most important "conservative" attribute: self control. Conservatives do not shy away from unfriendly truths.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah Tip O'Neill & Ted Kennedy embodied 'boy scout politics'

Re: Yeah Tip O'Neill & Ted Kennedy embodied 'boy scout politics'

Mar 30, 2021, 11:46 AM

"Boy Scout Politics" is a conservative approach criticized by the kooks. Naturally that would exclude democrats so I don't get your point there. You do the right thing regardless, no shortcuts. You do the right thing even if you lose.

Yeah, O'Neill was Reagan's opposition but they did not actively seek to destroy each other and were friendly outside of the political realm. Politics is still politics but now the toxic element now displayed. ONeill was presented the national medal of freedom by Bush - you tell me if Trump would give Peloski or any democrat that award. I bet a Dem could still do that to a few republicans and not risk the ire of the party or base. Heck you had republicans turning against conservatives that defended the constitution.

Newt was OPENLY, self stated that he was playing to win and that new partisan environment was his product. Not only that but noted that conservative ideology and conduct made for "bad politicians" - thus the boy scout comments. He really re-wrote the playbook. Regean/Oneill still played the gentlemans game. The hyper-partisan environment is a Newt construct - it has just been even more ramped up by misinformation. Newt wasn't wrong with his facts (he was just making his facts politically possible), but when you start feeding misinformation into that hyper-partisan whirlpool, you get idiots attacking congress.

Liberals and Democrats are, first and foremost, FELLOW Americans. Pure and simple.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When you're the first GOP Speaker in 40 years...

Mar 30, 2021, 12:04 PM

you're going to get vilified. Unfairly IMO.

You're correct that O'Neill was genial with Reagan outside the Capitol, perhaps not the best example.

Any thoughts on the Wellstone Memorial in 2002, particularly Tom Harkin's embarrassing speech? Did that engender civility?

I consider liberals my fellow Americans.

Leftists? No....they are not my fellow Americans.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: When you're the first GOP Speaker in 40 years...

Mar 30, 2021, 12:26 PM

But he really didn't. The "bad politician" item is something Newt publicly took credit for designing. This isn't media/liberal spin - it was his own strategic choice and he openly admitted them. Give him his due, it was brilliant at the time but I don't even think he knew how far it would be taken within the modern context.

His issue -was that the pre-1994 Republican party was much more fragmented with more internal disagreement. The Democrats were the "party loyalists" group at the time. Newt was able temper the party but when you are the "opposition" for 40 years, the ideology is going to be a lot more diverse. You had both that NE conservationism, the western independent conservatism and the newer "dixiecrat" flavor. There were some major potential rifts that would have divided Newt's newfound power and really allow the dems to out maneuver them on the policy front. He did a good job.

I am not worried by "leftist". Most are just fabricated myths like unicorns and we have the constitutions to handle the rest. When we start rejecting the constitution because it says something we don't like THAT is where the threat lies. My concern is that current attacks by the right will fail and make the scarier leftist look much more appealing to the general voter. I see it happening especially at the local/state level.

Americans by birth or by naturalization are Americans - no matter how crazy their ideas. The only thing threatening America is the reflective selves.

I have sat in a room with both Inhofe and Boxer (and yes, they seemed to be old friends) and if those two can find a way to govern - what in the heck is wrong with the rest of us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I share your concerns about over-reaction of the right

Mar 30, 2021, 12:42 PM

That is after all how the German Brownshirts came about...a reaction to the German Marxists.

I doubt that the US version of this would manifest itself in any way like the Third Reich.

But it has the potential to be ugly. At some point the left needs to 'call off the dogs' and let cooler heads on the right prevail.

Re: Just playing by the new rules that the left created...

Mar 30, 2021, 11:22 AM [ in reply to Re: Just playing by the new rules that the left created... ]

This is really relevant. Conservatives have pushed the agenda further to the right, dragging along Democrats with them. Newt played a critical role in that. However, I believe it starts all the way back with Barry Goldwater. He changed conservatism. He laid the groundwork for modern day conservatism. Then Reagan popularized it. And Democrats have been pushing towards the center ever since, culminating in Bill Clinton destroying the welfare state, ending banking regulations, exploding the prison population, and balancing the federal budget.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clinton did those things in response to a massive flip flop in congress. That was not his agenda (of course his agenda was....himself and as many women as he could get his hands or cigar on)

Unfortunately “owning the libs” or “make snowflakes cry”

Mar 30, 2021, 11:58 AM [ in reply to Re: Left tries to stop Right @ Clemsom ]

Has become the entire goal of the right. Basically replacing politics.

They allow what the left dislikes dictate what they enjoy. For instance a host on WCCP actually admitted that he never liked Dr Seuss and always found his books annoying growing up, but since the left tried to cancel him, suddenly he wanted to buy Dr Seuss books and support them.

And there’s plenty of examples of that.
