When will we get our first heisman?

Dec 9, 2022, 7:15 PM

I know it doesn’t mean much anymore but anyone think Cade could be it?

Cade or Ship next season bookmark it, could even see Antonio Williams grabbing it

It would really be great for Cade or Shipley to Win the Heisman and for Clemson to win a couple NC’s in the next 5 years.

Gooooo Tigers…….!

Agree it doesn’t mean much. Watson should have

won it over Jackson, but of course Jackson was crowned after 3-4 games of that season.

Interesting citing Antonio…that would be HARD to do…

Dec 10, 2022, 2:04 PM [ in reply to Re: When will we get our first heisman? ]

Desmond Howard is the highest profile WR who won the Heisman.

Howard was a 980 yard receiver during the season he won the Heisman and rushed for 200 more yards.
He made 62 receptions over 11 games or almost 6 receptions per game about almost ~90 yds/game.
Desmond was essentially the only go-to receiver on the team.

Those are crazy stats, and if Cade were to deliver those stats to Antonio Williams without spreading the ball around, the whole offense will be 1-dimensional. Although, Josh Downs was pretty 1-dimensional for the Heels.

If Williams got these similar stats and was spreading the ball around, Cade would have probably have to pass for 5,000 yards for the season, and HE would win the Heisman Trophy.

Howard was a big part of the kicking game if I remember correctly.

If Trevor or Deshaun couldn’t win I doubt anyone can. Our coaches and staff do not pad the stats to help offensive players win the heisman. Clemson is about team and family and is not about I.

Re: When will we get our first heisman?

Dec 9, 2022, 7:59 PM

True, but both DW and TL threw too many picks in the season where the spotlight was on them. I personally think DW was the best player that year, and he proved it in the playoffs, but it was too late.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right. If there’s one thing Dabo doesn’t want

Dec 9, 2022, 9:23 PM [ in reply to Re: When will we get our first heisman? ]

it’s players getting individual awards.

After Deshaun didn’t win the Heisman, Dabo said “He's the best player in the country, and if anybody doubts that, it's ridiculous” just to throw everyone off so they could focus on being family.

After Trevor didn’t win the Heisman, Dabo said “The best player in the country is Trevor Lawrence” just to throw everyone off so they could focus on being family.

This is why Dabo never acknowledges any players who are nominated for and/or receive individual awards. This is also why he turns down the Bear Bryant and Bobby Dodd coaching awards.

F A M I L Y!!!!!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That’s a lovely rationalization.

Dec 9, 2022, 11:35 PM [ in reply to Re: When will we get our first heisman? ]

“We are about team and family!”

In other words, teams that have Heisman winners are selfish and have a bad team culture.

You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

Dec 9, 2022, 7:41 PM

I hate to say this, but it's unlikely for many reasons. First because of Dabo. if we didn't win it with a genetically superior guy like Trevor, or a STUD baller like DW4 its hard to imagine. We play backups from 2nd series 2nd half, so don't have those Lamar 7 TD against Charlotte games. We ALSO don't have all the major sports writers like they do in the Midwest, hyping up Ohio St and Michigan dudes, or THE SEC SEC hype machine writers in Atlanta, Florida and Birmingham. Until a CU guy goes out and had a Roman Triumph (unlikely), It ain't happening.

When in the offense is focused primarily on one guy, which probably won't ever happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're at that point

Dec 9, 2022, 7:58 PM

I know most are going to point to DW4 or TL16 as the reason no...however:

1. If Trevor doesn't go down with COVID, I think he would've won in 2020.

2. DW4 ran into some stiff competition. Any other years he wins. Unfortunately, he ran in Lamar that put up stupid numbers (despite fading away in November) and Derrick Henry was the SEC Phenom with SEC backing.

We're getting to that point where if the conference can give us a game or two at the end of the year (besides the CC game) and we're undefeated, we can have a player have a shot at winning the Heisman.

Cade definitely has a good shot at winning it IMO. I could see him doing enough to stay in the conversation. He's already made some highlight plays this year and I don't think they are gonna be hard to come by for the next 2 years.

Dec 10, 2022, 12:28 AM

This! ^^^ I would have gone McCaffery in 15. When you break Barry Sanders single season all purpose yards record, that’s saying something. Think he only finished 100 yds or so behind Henry in rushing too. 2016, DW4 hands down. Not even close. Heisman voting should start after the season, though that doesn’t mean it should go to a player on the winning team.

Cade can win one as long as he turns out to be the guy many believe him to be(myself included). I say that bc next year I forsee alot of shootouts. Goodwin struggled to get the defense to generate pressure with these DL who the year before looked like a pack of starved lions that happened upon a juvenile zebra separate from the pack. This past year the DL was neutralized and Goodwin seemed scared to blitz at times to help.

Dec 9, 2022, 9:04 PM

I will take the NC trophy over the Heisman. IMO the Heisman Trophy no longer is given to the best college player. It’s going to go to who ever ESPN , CBS, and other college announcers want. They pick out 2 to 4 guys and push them all season. Look at the success HT winners have had in the NFL. They don’t look at players like TL who was a leader on and off the field, lead their team like Clemson to a NC and great wins over our opponents.

I think to win the Heisman you have to play for teams like Bama, OSU, Michigan, ND, or oacassionally some player from a school not in the ESPN click will win. But it’s going to be very difficult for a Clemson player to win because we are not in the ESPN click. We almost made it in but Herbie fell back under that BS OSU is an awesome team and they play a difficult schedule spell.

Dabo does not allow players to amass the big statistical numbers required to catch Heisman voter attention across the country. When other teams are running up the score and posting the prolific numbers, our guys are on the sideline cheering on the 3rd teamers who are getting a chance to play. Clemson might never have a Heisman winner but we will have some great football teams because of this culture Dabo has built.
