Do you really need 85 plus walk-ons? Based on the game that

I watch, there's only 11 at one time that can be on the field, blocking and tackling. There's mainly one guy passing the ball, four catching, five or so blocking....
I really don't understand the consternation and gnashing of teeth with lower scholarship numbers. Alot of the scholarships are given to dudes who will never see the field. Folks get mad when our staff plays everyone on the roster, but then get mad when we seem to be lowering the roster number.
With 70 on scholarship, there's theoretically 3-deep at all positions along with specialists.
With the portal, wouldn't that 15 player differential most likely transfer to where they have a chance to sniff the field? Is it better to get rid of the drama of a transfer from a full 85 or just pre-cull??
Getting 70 players of the right fit is WAY more important than getting 85 of kinda-fits.
So my question to those who have been on a large team.....Is having the extra bodies really that important? If its just blocking dummies needed, you can always find more walk-ons....
Go Tigers!

Given the amount of injuries we've had the last 2 years

it doesn't take long to get down to the 3rd player on any depth chart, in any key position.
In the instance we have just 70 players on scholarship, the talent drop off could be huge if we don't get some spots filled.

When did the 9 "right fits" become "kinda fits"

Transfer Portal is littered with Clemson players.

Lol The portal is not littered with Clemson players. We have less than almost anyone. Some FBS teams have 20 plus in the portal.

I looked....

....and you're wrong.
Clemson has 16 players enter the portal since 1/1/21.
There are 7 other teams, just in the ACC, that have put just as many (or more) players in the portal. There are also 7 teams in the SEC that have put more players in the portal than Clemson during the same time.
High end?? Try Syracuse at 25, Tenn at 23, Auburn at 22, FSU at 21, or Mizzu at 21.
Since 1/1/21:
25 - Syracuse 21 - FSU 17 - UVA 16 - UNC 16 - GT 16 - BC 16 - VT 15 - Louisville 13 - Miami 12 - Wake 9 - Pitt 6 - NC State 5 - Duke
23 - Tenn 22 - Auburn 21 - Mizzu 19 - Kentucky 18 - Ark 17 - Ole Miss 17 - Vandy 16 - TA&M 16 - Miss St. 15 - SC 15 - LSU 14 - Florida 13 - Bama 7 - UGA (They must be paying REALLY well. How long can they keep it up until the money dries up).
Maybe you should have looked at the numbers...

Not sure, let me research… let’s say Alabama’s roster for reference and I’ll get back!

Injuries academics and portal. Plus you need to be developing underclassmen.
Three deep goes to 1 deep pretty quick as we saw this year.

I guess you did not follow closely last year as we had Ajoe and Swinney starting due to injuries. It also allows time for players to develop as this does not bode well for out team 2-3 years out

I think Will Swinney being in the starting lineup answers your question.

Yea this year was a wake-up call on needing as many as we can get. Sit behind Clemson’s bench and it was sad to see how many boys were walking around with no pads. I believe we had been fortunate injury wise over the last few years but this year was one of the worst that I can remember.

Don't forget the Scout Team. We no longer have Jimmy Greenbeans for the scout QB.

Consider that Alonzo Stagg’s University of Chicago team won the National Championship in 1905 with 19 players. Outscorded their opponents 271-5. And I think we are every bit as good as they were.
