What’s your favorite/most memorable moment in CU bball?

Jan 9, 2022, 4:47 PM

Hands down mine is Buckner jams! I was 15 at the time and had only been living in NC for a few years, enough time to develop a hatred for UNC, their fans, and Dean Smith. I was watching the game with my dad and I think I jumped as high as Buckner on that play. That group of guys is still my favorite team.

A close 2nd would be Booker’s dunk over Duke. But that was more about the a$$ whoopin Coach K and co. took the enitre game, 74-47 and ranked #3

ACC refs would call two fouls on him before the game even started.

Special getting back to championship game for only the 2nd time.

Most of those moments are Barnes and OP as coaches.

Here is an Ellis moment. Clinching regular season ACC Championship win over Duke...

For me was the opportunity my wife, 2 daughters and I had to watch Matthew Lecroy, Kris Benson and Billy Koch play in the 96 Olympics in Atlanta. Koch pitched the game we were lucky enough to get tickets to and being at the Olympics was a once in a lifetime experience.

I forget the year, but we beat the crap out of duke by around 30 in the Purnell years at little John. I still like Brownell overall, but loved the relentless press from the purnell years.

For basketball is was being at Littlejohn in 1990 when we beat Duke to win the ACC regular season championship. Unbelievable how that many people were allowed into the arena and I still my ticket stub. By the way, bball can be either baseball or basketball.

My favorite as well. The fire Marshall was not happy - people were even seated on the steps! But wasn't anything he could do about it! Nobody was leaving that game til it was over!

This one!!!!!!

Jan 9, 2022, 5:56 PM

Sat on the steps in Littlejohn because all the seats were taken. We probably had 13,000 there. Back then students were guaranteed entry into all home games.

For an absolute "tore the roof off the John" moment, mine is

Jan 9, 2022, 7:57 PM [ in reply to Re: What’s your favorite/most memorable moment in CU bball? ]

a relatively meaningless game, last home game of the season for Clemson, either '75 or '76 season, whenever Marvin Dickerson was a Senior.

Dunking was still outlawed, but, right near the end of the last home game, Marvin Dickerson swooped downcourt on a breakaway, and slammed home a THUNDEROUS dunk. The roof nearly came off the John, of course the zebras called a technical foul, but WHO THE HEYALL CARED?

:)

The old joke, (and it was already old, even back then) was

Jan 10, 2022, 6:31 PM

that Baptist College, religious affiliation and all, was the best source of recreational drugs of all the college campuses in state.

I have NO knowledge of if that was actually true. (What little dabbling I did was sponging off of others, never had the cajones, or money, to buy any. I firmly believe that if I had gotten busted for drugs, I never would have made it to court. My dad would have removed me from this earth. And, I don't think I am kidding.)

Mine was watching Skip Wise holding the ball out for Monty Towe (Nancy St). When Towe would reach for the ball Skip would jerk it back. He did it 2 or 3 times. Crowd was going wild! Fun team to watch……Wise, Tree, Rome & Abraham. Skip Wise was the best player we ever had.

Re: What’s your favorite/most memorable moment in CU bball?

Jan 9, 2022, 6:08 PM

Cliff Ellis was the coach and we had the twin towers Dale Davis and Elden Chambell. We defeated Duke and win the regular season ACC. I believe their center was Giminski. Littlejohn was sold out and one of the loudest places I had ever been. The play of the twin towers around the goal was unbelievable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No that was the Duke Latener team...

Jan 9, 2022, 6:33 PM

We did beat #1 Duke at Littlejohn with Geminski.
We had a high number of big wins over Duke in this list...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gminski was much earlier than that.

Jan 9, 2022, 8:38 PM [ in reply to Re: What’s your favorite/most memorable moment in CU bball? ]

He graduated in 1980. Our 1980 Elite Eight team coached by Bill Foster had two great games against Gminski. The first was an upset of #1 Duke in Littlejohn. They beat us to end the regular season with a double OT win in Cameron.

We didn’t win the ACC regular season that year. That was 10 years later, in 1990.

I’m young so Duke at home in 2020. After losing the football natty the night before, to beat them like we did was awesome. John Newman 3-pointer after the poster dunk the previous possession was the loudest I’ve ever heard that place. Tevin Mack had a heck of a game too from what I can remember

When we knocked Duke out of the 2008 ACC tournament. My mom was dying with cancer and remember watching the game with her and my dad in her hospital room. We were all excited. Jan 9, 2022, 8:35 PM

Cheerleaders were handing little slips of paper, “Silent treatment, no noise until our team is introduced .” LJ was really quite except for someone slowly beating a bass drum, boom…boom… boom. Our players knew the plan and they were loose and happy during warm ups. Maryland players were tense, looking around, missing layups. When the teams came back out for intros, still boom… boom… boom. The introduced the first Terp and one Maryland fan stood up and shouted for about half a word and sat back down. Even when they introduced hated coach Lefty Drisel… boom… boom… Then the announcer said “And now your Cle” and a wall of noise as we all cheered. Clemson jumped out to a massive lead and held on to win.

we win by 10. Tony Stockman gets the ball with just over a minute left, tigers up by 5, and pulls up for 3 at the tip of the paw. the whole crowd sighs... shot goes down... the crowd erupts. Tigers hang on for the win.

Dale Earnhardt also died that day. So the tigers got no news coverage
