Furman had a great game plan, get the ball out quick, receivers running short crisp routes. As long as we play 8 yards off then those short throws will always be there. The only thing that looks like a problem to me is that we are young on the back end and they need experience, that is what the first three weeks are for! Now lets don't get started on the O Line any more! No reason that they are the constant thorn in our side almost every year!

I know it won't happen but with our speed on the front line and LB's, I'd almost like to see us mix in a 3-man front and use our guys in the box to shut down the screens before those plays have a chance to develop. Mix in some blitzes from the outside instead of up the middle and maybe confuse them a bit.

The team got back from Atlanta well after midnight Tuesday morning, we only had 3 days practice if that, the thoughts of the players were on Ella and her critical condition instead of Furman. We will see a different team this week.

I can totally get behind your explanation of what happened in the last 2 games. But, after this week of a normal practice schedule, playing a team at home that we are currently favored to beat by 34 points, if we don't come out with hair on fire, running through a brick wall, slinging the ball all over the field and shutting them down with our defense, I will be disappointed and even more concerned about where we are as we enter the meat of our schedule.
No more excuses after this week. We have to either put up or shut up the rest of the season.

Venables defenses gave up a lot of yardage between the 20s

What they didn’t do most of the time was give up a lot of points.
We were an aggressive high-risk high-reward defense under Brent Venables.
It looks like our new coach is following that model.
Note: Remember when we gave up 35 points in a *win* over Scar and TNet went ballistic?

have never been defensive coordinators before. They need time to grow into their new roles. Hopefully, it won't take too long.
Scheming to take advantage of our outstanding defensive line, while minimizing the weaknesses we have in the secondary, will be important.

1. Held Iowa State to over 100 yards less than their season average and 20 points less than their scoring average.
2. Held GT to about 70 less yards than the year before.
3. We played Furman on 4 days rest after getting back from ATL on Tuesday morning, and then we had an emotionally dragging matter before the game with the news of Ella Bresee. Most of Furman's yardage came in the 2nd half as we had the game in hand and started dragging.
It's too early to say Wes can do as well as the best DC in the country, but I do know that after 3 games it's baseless panicking to say, "what has happened to the defense?"

You're now open to considering Wes' performances against Iowa St and his improved-from-last-year defensive effort against GT? You're backing off blaming the secondary for the Furman 2nd half, and we don't have to re-create a scheme for an alleged weak secondary?

The explanation might be that we have very high expectations of our defense, especially the DL, so we are disappointed when they underperform but the bar is pretty low for our OL and no one seems that surprised when they underachieve.

On another note re: OL, I think where we are right now coming down to recruiting. We are not recruiting the OL the way we are able to recruit the DL. I used to live in WI and the midwest is full of good, big farm boys that know how to move people. This is what the Big 10 is known for. We have been developing our recruiting around a more national footprint but I don't see the presence we need in the Midwest to compete for some of these stud OL men. Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, and OSU dominate in that part of the country and we need to figure out how we can compete more effectively in that area. I don't even see that many recruits coming down for visits from the midwest so that has to be an area of focus moving forward.
