tgrpride7, maybe you haven't been keeping up with the Clemson team in 2021. You ask "how does a team go from Top 5 in the country to trash?"
(1.-a.) O-Line problems: 2020 O-Line had more experience and quality than the 2021 O-Line. 2020 O-Line personnel: 2nd round Jr. LT Jackson Carman (gone to NFL) and Sr. Center Cade Stewart (good player ... graduated). Backup OT Walker Parks was a good emergency option last year. O-Guard position had no meaningful depth in 2020, but was fortunate to have no injuries. 2021 O-Line personnel: Quality depth was limited in 2020, and gone in 2021. 2021 O-Tackles are good, but not as good as the 2020 OTs, but there's no depth behind them. 2021 Guards (Bockhorst and Putnam) returned, but coaches gambled by playing Bockhorst at Center (where he wasn't good enough) instead of keeping him at Guard (where he was OK). Marcus Tate (true FR at OG to start the season) is a great talent, but didn't know the plays and was marginally effective at best.
(1.-b) O-Line injuries: 2020 O-Line, despite being thin (not much depth) was virtually injury-free. 2021 O-Line, on the other hand, has had lots of injuries (Bockhorst - gone for last 40% of the season) and Putnam - missing games and/or playing poorly due to bad ankle sprain). 2021 O-Tackles have been OK, but not as good as 2020. Center has been a huge problem this year, with Bockhorst not working, H.Rayburn being OK, but out of action sometime (COVID), and M.Trotter being out early (broken hand) and ... due to small stature ... being over-whelmed by D-Tackles and unable to make a push on runs.
(2..) 2021's WR's drop passes Hollywood drops actresses when they lose their looks. Then we have had numerous injuries among our 'pass-catching' receivers which have resulted in multiple games lost for each of the ones who can catch.
(3..) 2020's QB was all world (#1 pick in NFL draft). 2021's QB is a developmental player with a great arm, but not the situational awareness or 'subtle' skills to distinguish him as a QB. Coaches are working on him (and he's getting better), but he's got a ways to go before becomng a 'championship caliber' QB.
Clemson's defense is tremendous, no problem with the D (which is still championship caliber).
But the offense has hit the trifecta of mediocrity.
This will change for the better for 2022 season ... but we are still in 2021.

I'd argue #1 DJ does not fit this style of offense. The OL is average just like most years, but there isn't an athletic qb to help alleviate that. OL play has been the Achilles of every team under Dabo yet he's won national titles despite average OL play. Etienne and Gallman also masked the OL weakness. Really this should've been addressed after an average LSU DL had their way with the OL. Caldwell and Batson need replacing for this team to take another step.

I get those things, but for the last 5-7 years we haven't really had a problem with depth. O-line has always been an issue. It's preparing from year to year. you dont see Bama go from preseason top 3 to unranked. It's bad and I mean very bad QB play. Over throws, panic, and not stepping up into the pocket to just be sacked. DJ situational awareness is terrible. Dont get me wrong im still behind him i havent given up on him.he needs to learn to run when the pocket does breakdown. he's a big guy just run it, dont just stand there and take a sack. I know we were spoiled with the last 2 QB's in Watson and Lawrence. There situational awarness was off the charts.

Weird to act like the offensive line was great last year. In most statistics, they're better this year. Last year had more experience, but far less talent. Still a far-cry from the 2018-2019 line and is below average, but it is actually an improvement. Even Etienne couldn't run with last year's line and Lawrence was running for his life every play, he just was more mobile than our current QB.
The QB is a bigger issue than the wide-receivers. DJ doesn't have a good arm with his current mechanics (though I hope he can get there), as that encompasses a wide range of qualities, including accuracy (probably the most important). He has an incredibly strong arm, and I think the lack of moderation on throws causes a lot of the aforementioned drops. I don't buy that he's playing that much better. If you look at raw stats, they may or may not be better, though I don't think they are. He's still bottom 5 in passer rating, accuracy, and ypa and his rating and accuracy are actually lower now than they were 5 weeks ago. Numbers don't lie. And him needing "subtle skills" to "distinguish" himself implies he's in the middle of the pack. And that's with the last two games coming against bottom 20 defenses. I do agree that Deshaun and Trevor were all-world.
I 'm not unhappy with the wide receivers right now. I don't think they 're as talented as last year's group, (which wasn't as talented as the year befores, but were still quite good. I do think their drops are unfortunate, but that's a function of a QB throwing the football too hard and an offensive scheme which relies on 50/50 jump balls).
The defense is tremendous, though I'd caveat that by saying our "healthy defense" is championship caliber. We're really beat up on defense now, and while they're still very good, they now are allowing quite a few yards, but rely on red-zone defense. You can't do that against the actual championship offenses.
I hope it improves next year too, but I do think some changes need to happen for that to be the case.

Everybody returns at every position on offense when's the last time clemson had every single lineman back on offenseshould be light years better next year if not one of the best offenses in the country ,Justin Ross is the only one gone which I think we will be just fine with him gone.

Nobody goes to the playoff every year. Alabama didn't make it to the Final in 2019. Clemson played LSU for the title in New Orleans. Both Clemson and LSU were undefeated in that title game.
Last year we lost to Ohio State in the CFP Semi final.

DJ will always be a terrible garbage quarterback. Offense scores 9 points against Wake.

I dont have the exact stats but we havent been owned all year. Lost to probably the best team in the country by 7, double OT at state and a good pitt team on the road by 10. Should be a great game in the valley.
