What's missing from this offense?
Sep 22, 2021, 11:19 AM

4 things are missing.
DW4 Renfrow TL Etienne
Four playmakers including 2 of the best QB's in college FB in the past 6 seasons. The reason CU was in the playoffs in the past 6 years. Yes, others contributed, but those 4 were the playmakers who made things happen.
Dabo and TE are still designing the offensive playbook around those 4 playmakers who are now in the NFL. Time to design the offense around what you now have, not on what you had and are not going to have this year. The offense is not going to improve until that happens. The past is the past. The past players and the future recruits are not going to help the present. You dance with who you "brung". This is when the coaches earn their big bucks. The coming weeks will tell.
It ALWAYS boils down to "what have you done for me lately?"

Wholeheartedly agree j y t but here's my question to you, isn't that why the coaches have a retreat in February or March whenever to work on the installation.

I do agree with the theme of your post.
However, in fairness to the coaching staff, Watson and Lawrence were VERY different players and the playbook was very different for each of them.
Our coaches transitioned from one to the next (with a gap year of KB) pretty smoothly.
Watson and Lawrence get lumped in together because they were similarly great but their skillsets and style we very different and the coaches accommodated each very well.
Hopefully we can start to see some results of the coaching staff figuring out this group of players as a whole as well.

Why 100 you ask? For every yard on that field each and every time they go out on that field.
Want to get first downs. Want some contact. Want to score.

I seriously doubt it is that simple. Our coaches are not stupid - they know that personnel changes each year.
I personally think the problems relate to play calling and/or not being able to adjust during the game. And perhaps the offense or play all is too complicated.

Y’all must’ve not seen the Manning Monday night football program. They laugh and laugh at this notion of half time adjustments, Eli said his experience was you get to the locker room eat an orange slice, have some Gatorade, coach says keep it up and you turn back around and march out to the field. Half time adjustments is just a story line, according to the Manning Bros.

Maybe with the mannings at QB, you don't need to make any half time adjustments.

A true slot receiver. DJ just doesn't have a guy that he trust for the dump off or a guy that finds a way to get open. Ross is not the guy. He is a tough boundary receiver. Smaller body types can get lost within zone. Ross is too big and after his injury, I think the slot is more risky for him. Taylor is the guy. Put him in the slot, Ross opposite Ngata, and watch it go!!

We’d have to have time to throw to the boundary for that to be relevant.

This is true. I think they should use Shipley more in this role out of the backfield, of course DJ also seems to have some issues with touch passes.

A well-coached, big, sure-handed TE would also provide a bit of safety valve as you mentioned.

OL is a BIG issue. It all starts there. "Built for the inside out......" has been thrown around and its absolutely correct.
IMO, we are not taking enough OL each class. We are recruiting better there the last few years, but our lack of quality depth is haunting us. Need to adjust and be at 85 every year. I agree with CDS that we should be choosy with our offers...but we need to tweek that a bit so be aren't left short-handed or taking projects last minute. Just my two cents....

Start with an Oline that can create running lanes and protect DJ well enough for him to overcome the “yips” from the pocket. Suddenly Clemson will become a balanced offense again. Ross and Ngata will be more productive. Shipley will get into the open field and we’ll see chunks plays again.
Now the million dollar offensive coordinator question. Is the line struggling because they are young and/or inexperienced or because Elliott calls a predictable game plan allowing defenses to sniff out the play calls before the ball is snapped?

Who is getting open for "quick game"?? No Renfrow. No Rogers. No Artavis Scott.
Too many predictable down and distances because of lack of production on 1st down plays. Mind you; you stop a tempo offense(not that we are) on 1st down and throw them off schedule and it blows up the gameplan. You never get to string plays back to back in order to wear out the DL.
Explosive plays! Accurate QB! Average to slightly above at a minimum OL.

CLEMSON should be....
Sep 22, 2021, 12:57 PM
|

Superior at OL by now. We've had the OL issue for a long, long time. Its been good enough at times, but why not make it a dominant group? Its getting better with highly ranked guys signed in the past ± several years, but we aren't signing enough IMO---we don't have enough quality depth. Look at what BAMA and OSU are doing recruiting-wise with the OL (strictly numbers-wise). We just offered the #2 ranked guard (I think) from Bosco (DJ's HS) last week. Too late to the party probably. I agree with being choosy....but why put yourself at a disadvantage like that were you are scrambling late to sign a project b/c you only offered a few top OL and you got one or two at the most? Statistically, we can't afford to be wrong as much as the others mentioned above. Why do that??

So who is making those OL recruiting decisions ? Robbie Caldwell ????, It seems as if our problem in the last 2 CFP games has been OL. Problem seems pretty consistent, but no change made. Have you noticed how open Alabama receivers are. They are almost always wide open. On the other hand Clemson receivers seem to always have a defender in there face. We have some of the fastest receivers in the game but when you run 5-7 yard routes you never get to use your speed like Alabama. Again is that because of OL.

How in the world did we let our oline recruiting get in such a shape that we have to start a freshman?

We didn't develop anyone. We don't develop that position. We can have all the top-talent we want, but Mitch Hyatt is probably selling cars in Myrtle Beach, god bless him.

Our biggest problem is predictable first down plays that gain minimal yards. It’s ok to throw down field on first down .

I would have to add Mike Williams and / or Tee Higgins to
Sep 22, 2021, 4:53 PM

your list, depending on whether we are talking 2016 or 2018.
Tee seemed to be able to get open at will, and Mikey didn't even NEED to get open, just throw it up high, and he would out jump anybody else going for the ball, and then snag it.
Between Renfrow or one of those two, either of our Elite QBs had multiple proven options to go to.
Some combination of less elite QB AND WR's is part of the problem. Our offensive lines back then weren't rated to be overwhelming either.

O line depth. Dabo said that we have 8 guys that deserve playing time. Evidently there is a decent sized drop off after the first 5, since they played every snap against GT. Where would we have been if Marcus Tate had not been a pleasant surprise. Dabo has all but admitted that he should not be starting by saying that he has been put in an unfair situation. However, he is so much better than the next best option that he played every offensive snap on Saturday. I have been reluctant to call out Caldwell, but something has to change with the offense and that seems to be the most reasonable place to start. When every lineman on your 2 deep doesn't deserve playing time, there seems to be an issue.

Blaming a freshman for “not knowing” is somewhat understandable, BUT what is not understandable is why at least 4 or 5 other guys that have been in program for a couple of years STILL don’t know what to do. I kinda doubt that Tate is so much better than the other guys that have been here. Why aren’t they all getting better????

Until people realize that, its not going to matter what else we do. And frankly, if you didnt understand that prior to this year, well, Im not sure what youve been watching. It took first round NFL skill position guy and a complete diaper fire of an ACC to make it work the past 3 years. And we've seen what happened vs other elite programs. Cliffs notes: it didnt work.

Significant involvement from the TE position to help sustain drives. Possibly would open up the run plays a bit. Certainly frustrating the OL continues to be a weak link. It's telling ETN couldn't get 1000 yds against ACC defenses last year.
