What's everyone doing for memorial day?

Kinda a weird "holiday", right? Should be all about remembering fallen servicemen and women, but drinking beer and wearing American flag bikinis counts too. I'm gonna take the dogs by fisher house then go into the big bad city for a parade.

Gonna disappoint Bham Tiger. Gonna refrain from driving my pickup with a Confederate flag in the back nor attend the annual cross burning with my fellow Southern conservative knuckle dragging Klansmen.

It is a day to celebrate the freedoms that have been given to us by those that will remain forever young. I know a quadruple amputee from Afghanistan who is actually ambulatory. His name is Travis Mills. He wrote a book entitled Tough as They Come.

He told me the best way to remember the dead from our wars is to take some time to briefly reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen, fly the flag and then go have a LOT of fun to celebrate the fact that we live in such a great place.

Gonna fly the US flag, have a cookout and enjoy the family.

Admitted to the hospital Friday with possible stroke-like symptoms which I had experienced intermitently over the prior week, but intensified Friday morning. At times I was unable to understand people when they were talking to me, and I was unable to respond as well. I could hear them and see their lips moving, but it was incomprehensible. When I tried to respond, I could not formulate a sentence or get anything sensible out. Each episode only lasted a minute or two, and at first I attributed it to fatigue or blood sugar fluctuations (type 2 diabetic). That, combined with some dizzy spells, eventually prompted a trip to the ER, whereupon I was admitted. So far, everything looks good/normal. 2 CT scans and lots of blood work and "touch my finger, then touch your nose", "lift your right foot", "keep your head still, follow my finger" (like field sobriety tests?). They want to do a few more tests (MRI and echocardiagram) which because of the fact that I have an implanted pacemaker/defibrilator, requires some workarounds and people who can do it. Problem is, it's a holiday weekend, and they are on skeleton crew as it is, and all of the people needed to coordinate and carry out these procedures are in extremely short supply this weekend, so here I sit, and wait.

The good news is, I feel good and am having no more symptoms. Could be stroke, TIA, migraine related, stress/anxiety, etc., just waiting to find out. In the mean time, I am staying connected to the real world through this forum and enjoying sports on tv this weekend (How 'bout that baseball team?). Nothing wrong with drinking beer and wearing bikinis, but yes, we all should remember what it's all about, and take a moment to remember those who knowingly, willingly, and literally gave their lives so the rest of us could live free.

Hard to TU that. I hope it isn't too long of a wait until they can check everything out. I suppose there is no safer place to be while you wait for testing! Be well.

Neuroligist, cardiologist, and PA all agree all tests indicate this is most likely complex headache/migraine rather than stroke or TIA. Cardio confirms heart and arteries are good. Coming back for MRI this week as outpatient to hopefully confirm.

Dear Smiling Tiger®

Please consider going to a neurologist that is associated with a MS (multiple sclerosis) or a neurology practice that specializes in epileptic seizures.

Your problem may be epileptic seizures; if these go on as untreated, then disabling brain damage is an extreme risk. Each time a person has an epileptic seizure, a bit of their brain dies.

FYI, the on-call neurology specialists at most hospitals are not as skilled as neurologists who practice at special clinics. The ‘hospitalist’ neurologists just aren’t as good at interpreting EEG’s … and for goodness sake, if they didn’t run an EEG on you, then make haste to get one run.

Johns Hopkins … either Jacksonville, FL or Baltimore, MD … if you can’t find (and get into) a MS focused neurology clinic, then go the Johns Hopkins route …either Jacksonville, FL or Baltimore, MD.

If you Atlanta is accessible to you, then try Atlanta Neuroscience Institute. They’re the best in Georgia.

If Charleston, SC is accessible, then try MUSC. They are the best in South Carolina.

Best of luck to you.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

If I said that I was going to burn a flag and throw fake blood on some veterans, I'm sure there are some people on here who would miss the joke!

It is a beautiful day in these parts - 72 and breezy - so I enjoyed a nice long walk by the water with Gryphon, my doggo. I'll grill later.

Catching up on some work and getting ready to fox some smash burgers and brats for the family. This is always busy season in my line of work and I don’t recall a Memorial Day in the past 15 years where I haven’t worked at least a little.

May 29, 2023, 9:26 PM [ in reply to Re: What's everyone doing for memorial day? ]

but what the eff is a smash burger? Isn't is just like...a burger that's intentionally thin like one of the two only styles of burgers made? Fat and thin?

Technically…yes. But the ‘smash’ comes about by throwing a ball of meat on a flat top (or skillet) and smashing it with a spatula or something. End product is something much thinner than a thin burger you might grill on a traditional open grate grill. More surface area for maillard reaction…and I think a better taste.

Coincidentally, I grilled Sheboygan-style Brat Burgers yesterday.
