Playoff Expansion good for Clemson

I know a lot of people are complaining about the expansion. Obviously the current system has worked well for us! However because the ACC has been weak Clemson is often in a position of needing to go undefeated to guarantee a spot in the playoffs. The expanded playoff gives us a cushion when we have one of those losses such as Pittsburgh and Syracuse to still get in the playoff. So in the long run I think it’s a positive.

We can probably lose 2 games and still be 12th. The best team will rise to the top. It will be just like many sports, the healthier teams and the teams that are gelling at the right time will work end up in that final 4 group. Its going to be fun.

And we could get a home playoff game which would be awesome.

The two chances that come to mind are a 2017-18 cfp matchup against Oklahoma and 2019-20 against LSU. Against LSU, I feel that we were pretty bruised and battered from the OSU game and a fresh matchup would have been tighter. Whether we win either of those is complete conjecture though.

Even though we were 3rd seed in 2019-20, I have a hard time believing that an undefeated defending champ would be left out of a two team final.

...tried to think of something to complain about but couldn't. The first year we finish #5-#12 we will all be glad we at least have a shot and suddenly complaints about playoff expansion will disappear. Lot's of other team fanbases will feel that way as well. Your point is well taken.

I'm more open to it than I was, I just don't like watering down the regular season. NFL games where a team is resting their starters for the playoffs are almost unwatchable. Granted, it may be more interesting with college teams because we get to see an up and coming 5* or whatever. Actually, this just made me realize, with major rivalry games the last week of the season, it may be tough for teams with a playoff lock to rest their starters and risk losing to their rival.
Can you imagine an undefeated Bama or OSU resting everyone with a chance to lose to Auburn or Michigan?

Actual facts disagree with you. The Acc Champion has

never been left out of the cf playoff. In fact two one loss acc teams made it last year.
12 teams is total horsehocky ...and nothing more than a money grab.

We prospered in the 4 team playoff system, but there is no guarantee we can keep up that success. But with 12 teams we should be in the hunt for a long time. Timing is everything as they say.

Any team that loses twice doesn't belong in the playoffs.
