What was your first Clemson football Game? memories?

Jun 26, 2015, 10:35 AM

1982 duke for me. i was just three years old, but as a dukes of hazard fan, the only thing i can vaguely remember being disappointed that the general lee was not in the valley that day. dad owned his own business and had to work an occasional saturday, so mom thought it would be ok to take me to a game. if i lasted a quarter or half the day would be considered a success but apparently i lasted the whole game and have been hooked ever since. we still have the same seats in the south upper deck, and it has been amazing to see the families grow up around us. there is something in these hills.

at some point in the next year or two i remember homer jordan getting hurt and feeling bad for him. first away game was at Ga tech in '86 or so, when we won 27-3 ish on a hot as blazes day that ended with us eating at the rotating peach tree plaza restaurant. to this day, the '87 georgia game remains at the top of my list of favorite games. i distinctly remember the punt downed at the one yard line and thinking: "if we can get a safety we have a shot." the first time i remember being giddy about a game was the infamous puntrooskie game. pouring down rain at the kickoff and i remember looking to my dad and saying, "i have been looking forward to this game for all week." as a kid, i had no idea what was happening on that fake, but i distantly recall a silent death valley minus the fsu fans to the left of the hill. they were going nuts.

if you are anything like me, you relate life's major moments around a clemson sporting event. i can look back at 90% of the games over the past 20+ years and remember what was going on in my life in relation to clemson football. i'll never forget hobbling up to out seats after i injured my knee in a high school football game for the '97 fsu game where tony horne nearly single handedly pulled the upset. i won't forget my ex-wife's first game against virginia the first game after september 11, or our car being towed two years later after an overtime win over the cavs. the alabama debacle in atlanta came five days before my wife decided to leave me, and 2008 remains the ply season where i attended every game home and away as an attempt to escape the pain of separation from my wife.

and the proud moments: as a sophomore at clemson i had a buddy at LSU that came up for Bowden Bowl I. he was blown away and to this day swears that our death valley is better than theirs. i headed down to the other death valley a couple of weeks later and had a blast, but its no clemson. i'll never forget sitting in groves stadium at wake forest in 2003, being down 45-0 and thinking this is the end of the bowden era. a week late i could not give away my extra tix to the fsu game and in the days that shocking win many friends apologized for not believing we had a chance and not taking the tix. went to the 2009 miami OT game and remember being emotional after jacopby ford caught the winning td in overtime. it had been a long year and that single moment kind of told me that some day things would be ok again.

wins in columbia trump just about any other moment. my first game in columbia was in 1991 and i saw five straight clemson wins before i saw us lose down there. i always believe that there is no better place to see a clemson win than in williams brice, but there is no worse place to lose than in the same venue.

i could type on this subject forever. clemson has and will always be a major part of my life. i have been told on countless occasions, that it's just a game....but for me it means so much more than that.

I didn't grow up a College Football fan ( from upstate New York) then moved south when I was 7. It's all about pro football up north.

My girlfriend (a Clemson Grad) Wife now, took me to the FSU game in 2007. Her whole family bleeds orange, Dad a Alumni, grandfather an Alumni.

I remember being so awestruck by the experience. During the game I thought, this is for me, I want to be a part of this.

Since then, I have been all-in. Will graduate next year with a masters in Buisness admin and entrepreneurial innovation from Tiger Town!

Ken McAfee, NDs all american TE, told my Pop on the field that he had never been hit that hard in his life. I got Johnathan Brooks' belt from his pants and met Jim Stuckey too. Jun 26, 2015, 11:04 AM

the first one I can remember was when Alabama came to Clemson in 1967. I remember my father telling me about Bear Bryant, and how they were called the "Crimson Tide" and their line was known as the "Red Elephants". They had a hot-shot QB named Kenny Stabler. We lost a close one, 13-10. Later that year we beat #10 NC State after our players painted their shoes orange in response to NC State wearing all white shoes; I remember that one pretty well too.

I know Dad and Mom took us in the late 50's and parked right in front of Fike's front door. We ate out of the trunk of Mom's 1956 blue/white Pontiac Chieftan 4-door before the game started at 2:00.

First real tailgate recollection is same location in 1960 with a Ford Galaxie S/W and using the tailgate as a table...don't remember the game so much as just being there and seeing the oranges in the Orange Bowl Trophy inside.

Still have Mom(she's a 100 last April 7) and Dad's been gone since 14 Dec 2008.

I cannot remember that far back, but it was the first home game in 1968 as a freshman. I was on the Pershing Rifles freshman drill team, so I had to usher the first half. Frank Howard was the coach and we weren't all that good honestly. Nothing like today's team. Anyway - I was 18 and probably checked out the women more than the game. There were almost no women on campus in those days, so you seized your opportunities when you could. :)

But I still loved fb. Maybe if we had had better teams it would have been more fun to watch.

the kids sliding down the hills...both the EEZ one and the one adjacent to the North Stands.

Many times you could hear the kids yelling or screaming during the games, so we alternated between watching the field and the hills.

On return trips after graduating packs of the young folks would approach our tailgates, begging for cardboard with much of the begging accompanied with "We're thirsty and hungry" comments. So, we usually complied giving up sodas, sandwiches, chicken and cardboard. No doubt, some of our Tigernetters were among those kids in those days. lol

In spite of winning only four games, we went 4-1-1 and finished 2nd in the conference. The only game I really remember that year was losing 7-3 at home to the chickens, when they ran a punt back for their only score.

While a student, I suffered through Coach Howard's last two seasons, and Hootie's first two. We won a total of 16 games in four years, lost 3 of 4 to the chickens, and were hammered every year by UGA. Not a fun time to be a Clemson student/football fan.

I don't remember much. I remember it was cold, and possibly raining. If the internet were around then I'm pretty sure Tigernet would have gotten Ford fired in losing to Minnesota in such a dud bowl game.

Since then I've seen bad teams and good teams. Really happy to be where we are right now!

Furman 1961 ... or was it 1962

Jun 27, 2015, 11:01 AM

It was Furman in Death Valley. My memory was a 42-3 win ... but I can not find that score in the Clemson history.

The Confederate Battle Flag was about 30 yards by 20 yards and led the team onto the field. I think that "Dixie" was played, not Tiger Rag, at the entrance. It was rousing and something I had never imagined.

Expanding a bit on this, my favorite games seen (in person) are

3-2 over Duke in 1965
40-35 over Virginia in 1966
