What was ESPN thinking with the Aaron Judge cut-ins?

Sep 25, 2022, 2:55 AM

I’d love to know how many people watching an ACC football game could give two $hyatts about Yankees baseball records. Someone explain that one to me because it was infuriating.

No idea except the fact they're catering to their big money fanbases like the Yankees. But I know Auburn and Mizzou fans are just as infuriated since it was also broadcasting over their game. I know ESPN had to have got an earful about it. Don't look to see them to do it again. If Judge was going for an MLB record then maybe they could justify it (not really) but it was just for a Yankees record. Honestly, it just doesn't matter to those that wanted to watch football, especially teams that are located in The South. Just put a little banner across the bottom of the screen and leave it be.

To be fair, it’s the AL record, not just the Yankees record.

Yeah, I just remembered that. Thank you for that correction. Not a huge follower of MLB.

Some would also call it the MLB record without roids.

He was trying to tie the record, not set it.

It is annoying, but as someone who's as much a fan of baseball as football, it's of at least some interest to me. I'm a Braves fan, but it's still a cool thing. I do hate the cut-ins, though.

It seemed pretty normal to me. Moreover, ABC probably had it for all of their games that were going around the nation in regeional coverage. Someone breaking the homerun record is pretty huge as far as sports are concerned. Its not like they made it so we couldn't watch our game, even if it wasnt up to our standards.

It might be understandable if he was stuck on 70****

He is trying to beat the AL record and many will consider his 62 the MLB record if he pulls it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I for one

Sep 25, 2022, 2:54 PM

Will consider it the record. Even if the mlb doesn’t

It happens a lot for records like this. College football broadcasts aren’t intended solely for fans of the teams, but a broader audience some of which is interested in other sports. I don’t like these live cutins either, but not unusual or a big deal.

Since I didn't watch the baseball game, I can only assume the TV people kept breaking into it too so the world could witness real time Hartman going for the world record for TD passes in a game.

It’s not like his next HR breaks the record.

Sep 25, 2022, 8:25 AM

It just ties it. Based on that alone, it wasn’t warranted, IMO.

I was livid and hated it. Run a crawler and cut away during a timeout. A split screen with the baseball audio was unacceptable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was glad they did it, I wanted to see if he tied it,

Sep 25, 2022, 2:49 PM

so I was thankful I didn’t have to flip back and forth. I was assuming ahead of our game that they would probably do some cut ins.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seriously! The record is 73 end of story!

Sep 25, 2022, 2:53 PM

It’s a ridiculous drummed up nothing burger of a story.

espn (and abc by default) are a sad shell of what they used to be.

I love baseball, but that was an absolute embarrassment to sports journalism and coverage. Save that attention for a real record.
