What is your opinion about Gottfried's NCSU revival of...

Mar 18, 2013, 10:13 AM

...the Wolfpack's basketball program IN TWO YEARS??

Yes, I told my NCSU buddy that I am very, VERY skeptical of how these McDonald's All-Americans are all of the sudden showing up in Raleigh, but it doesn't seem to take a Hall Of Fame basketball coach to turn the situation around quickly. At least Gottfried has not needed a 3-5 year downturn to start an upward trend.

if you have to constantly make excuses for a coach

Mar 18, 2013, 10:17 AM

that aint a good sign. More often than the rare occasion, that coach proves to be not the answer and gets fired. But people like to hang onto that 1% like Beamer and K.

a place like NC State can turn around quickly

Mar 18, 2013, 10:20 AM

because they love the game and had some good players on the team when he got there. They simply need a good game coach to get them playing together....which they still struggle with at times. They also love basketball at State, have great facilities, have a desire to compete with NC and Duke.

Thinking that if Brownell had State's depth and experience,

Mar 18, 2013, 10:26 AM

then he'd run circles around Gottfried. Almost beat him as-is, with no fault to coaching for the two close losses.

most would say State under achieved this year

Brownell's problem is not a lack of coaching ability.

He just doesn't have the players.

Sidney Lowe was a great recruiter, but a horrible coach. So there was a lot of talent already on hand when he got there. They only lost one kid to transfer (Harrow) and Gottfried was able to hold the recruiting class together in his first year. Plus, they aren't ranked and they are a 8 seed in the tournament, so I'd say they are in roughly the same shape as when Sidney Lowe left.

Brownell had to deal with several transfers and lost the entire recruiting class his first year, so there's that.

That said, I live in Raleigh and work with a ton of State grads, and they are not happy with this season at all. I can actually hear two of them bitching right now. Of course, they are silly State fans and they were sure they were gonna win the NC because of their lofty preseason ranking.

Recruiting: Gottfried/NCSt has had several consecutive recruiting years of good to great talent and its finally starting to pay off---although looking at their play over the season, I wouldn't call Gottfried an HOF coach yet---the Wuffies are STILL prone to bad mental gaffes and effort at very inopportune times. IMO, because NCSt's achievements weren't higher this season, I think you'll start to see their recruiting slowing down some--but there's quite a bit of talent coming from that Triangle area since the advent of some of those private Christian academies who specialize in getting talented HS basketball players good enough grades to get into college...I think CJ Leslie took this route

Facilities:----there's no finer arena in the ACC than the one the wuffies share with the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL

Tradition---much to my jealous chagrin, there's no comparison between Clemson's basketball history and NCSt's....dating back even to Everett Case's days in the 40's and 50's--the old Dixie Classic was Case's brainchild and a model for the ACC Tournament

Also IMO, its going to take a long-term commitment from a talented Clemson HC to start a foundation strong enough to build a great basketball program.....and the sooner the better. I went to my first Clemson basketball as child at the old "Cow Palace" (Fike) in 1954 and while I've had a ton of fun as a diehard Clemson basketball fan, the bad games and missed opportunities stick in my mind as well.

If we could just find a bunch of players who could SHOOT FREAKIN' FREE THROWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...:~)

I think the internet crowd on here is a fairly young. And I believe most young Clemson fans do not have a true grasp of how bad Clemson Basketball has been historically. But I have beaten that horse to a pulp.. So I will move on.
NCSU is part of the old guard. Make no mistake about it, they are a basketball school with National Championships in 73 and 83. They also had arguably one of the all time great basketball players ever, in David "Skywalker" Thompson. They have been down for the past 20 years. However I feel they are like Clemson was in football, ie a sleeping Giant. It just took them getting the right coach. I don’t think their current guy is it. I really thought he would do more this year given the talent he had. And I still would not be surprised if this State team has a good run in the tourney. In fact, it would not surprise me if they reach the elite 8/or final 4. But then again, this has been a real hit or miss ball club and could be bounced in the first round.
What I think most Clemson fans should be looking at is Miami. They came out of nowhere this year. They took advantage of a down league and won the title. It makes me sick that they were able to take advantage, while for all the years Clemson has been trying, we have only been able tie for the regular season in 1990. And come in second place in the tourney in 2008.
It is probably easier to recruit ball players for Miami than Clemson. But I believe that could be arguable point. And maybe it was a result of the rogue booster. But beyond that, I don’t feel like Miami is leaps and bounds better than Clemson in anything. So it is very frustrating when a non basketball school that has only been in our conference a short while, has more basketball trophies than Clemson, an original charter member.
Hope Brownell can right the ship quickly. Because when you see success on the court in Miami, it does not give you much of a leg to stand on when trying to explain poor play here in Clemson.

team...that team had some great talent on it...I remember that old arena...Reynolds Coliseum...that place was always loud and packed..tough place to play.

The freshmen are great

Mar 18, 2013, 10:37 AM

but it's the seniors and juniors, recruited by Sidney Lowe; Wood, Howell, Leslie and Brown who are the heart of that team. Let's see how he does next year when all of them are gone

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NC State basketball ... Gottfried doing just okay, no more.

Mar 18, 2013, 11:22 AM

Where have you been. McDonalds All-Americans are, and have been common place in the NC State program. Recruiting has never been a particular problem at NC State.

Gottfried "revival" ... I dunno.

If a program with two NCAA titles and multiple ACC titles won by legendary players and coaches, a program with string of all-americans and a school where the ACC Tournament was actually conceived of and created ... needs to be revived, then yes, I guess you could say that Mark Gottfried has "revived" it.

But, if you talk to the average NC State fan (and I talk to lots of them) this season has been fraught with under-achievement and disappointment given the pre-season expectations.

NC State is a place where the tradition, the facilities and the enthusiasm are all in place for greatness and yet, even they cannot seeem to get over the hump lately.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wait, you're calling starting the season #5 in the country

Mar 18, 2013, 11:25 AM

and expected to win the ACC to where they fell as "revival"?

If Brownell had Gottfried's team (most of whom are Lowe's players), he'd do better.

By the way Mr. iTiger...you're a tarhole.
