What is your grade for Tony’s play calling yesterday?

Oct 31, 2021, 9:23 AM

I give him a D. At least he stuck more with the running game.

Some issues and things that he needs to realize.

1. We cannot block well enough to attack the perimeter. Thus the “speed” option, pitches, and WR reverses etc. need to be eliminated from the plan. Running vertically between the tackles or off tackle is what is working.

2. How in the world can you still call a play that one is a direct call for a WR screen or 2 give the QB the option to throw it? We cannot seem to block a screen of any sort, but enough with running a play that gets blown up 80% of the time for us. You are not running something off this to get receivers open so just don’t run it. This is not just this year. It seems to almost be a crutch when he cannot think of another play to call.

3. DJ is not a runner. Unfortunately, we did not recruit the correct player for this offense. We have to find a way to limit this a little more and adapt the offense more to his skill set.

the speed options and outside run game depend on two things: OL cutting off pursuit from inside out and blocking by the wide receivers. We’ve not been good at either no matter who’s calling the plays. We’ve been better at straight up blocking between the tackles and even pass blocking than we have the former

Get off of the football message board if you cannot offer some perspective and talk football. Or throw out some silly childish statement for improvements that anyone who has played football knows.

The good and the bad.

Why do you think this board exists?

Some plays got blown up, but execution is still the major issue. Get off Tony’s back already.

Re: B

Definitely agree with the execution statement, but when you know we cannot execute a play like a WR screen, don’t call it or give the QB the option for it.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: B

Oct 31, 2021, 10:10 AM [ in reply to B ]

Execution is no doubt an issue, but there are clearly areas we execute better than others. For example, on designed inside tackle runs for our RB’s our O line does it’s best blocking. Runs outside the tackles are our worst blocking. The oline is horrendous with any screen pass that they are responsible for blocking on. Yet Tony will take 3 plays of a 3 and out to test the perimeter on screen passes and wide runs. He will inevitably call a screen pass to kill momentum.

Execution is an issue, but the OC needs to be able to see what the offense is executing well and build a game plan and or adjust a current game plan to that. This is not happening consistently.

The biggest blunder of a play yesterday from a coaching stand point was the fake speed option that then turned into a pitch to the half back to the short side of the field. This play initially draws the defense up with the fake speed option and from there the QB and running back take a couple of steps BACKWARDS to dig a deeper hole before the ball is pitched back to the short side of the field. I don’t know who designed this play or why Tony thought we should run it but that was the absolute worst play design and call I have ever seen in a game. That play alone puts a grade at no higher than a D+. I don’t know if that is Tony’s play or call so I’m not blaming it on him. I’m blaming it on anyone who had a hand in it.

Oct 31, 2021, 9:49 AM

call due to just lack of ability by DJ, the oline, and wr's. On the other hand, quit calling wr screens and pitch plays because we can't block on the perimeter at all. The play calling on the series before the end of the 1st half with the ball at the 50 was pretty bad. Seems like even when we had Trevor, our offense was all predicated on 50/50 balls saying our guy is better than your guy, now that's not true and the lack of creativity/imagination is glaring.

Re: What is your grade for Tony’s play calling yesterday?

C - some good calls, some bad calls and some calls looked good because of individual effort like Mafah's long run (breaking the tackles at the line) and Shipley's last TD. T.E. is still too predictable in my opinion. I know there's a 50/50 chance to guess pass or run but to be able to call run or pass and know where it is going 80% of the time is not a good thing. You know the defenses know it too.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I give him a "C". He did employ more presnap motion than we

had seen previously, and at least tried some down the field shots. But, he also called some straight ahead runs on 3rd and long that were just bizarre. Patently obvious that he does not trust DJ to get a first down via the throw on anything long, or on our side of the 50. But, overall, an improvement over the previous week.

I could have sworn back in the day Dabo stated that if his WRs couldnt block they weren't going to be on the field nor get the ball. The old WRs we had before the last few seasons blocked down field. These guys either don't know how to block or don't want to. Both are bad.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What is your grade for Tony’s play calling yesterday?

Oct 31, 2021, 2:51 PM

My only criticism is our apparent lack of attacking the middle of the field, we have receivers all over the boundary and no one in the middle of the field.

Also have to separate play calling vs play execution. He can make the right call, if they don't execute the play you can't say it's on TE.

We have execution errors almost every play.

I thought DJ's decisions on a few plays was not at the level it should be, I heard Dabo said the int was on Ngata and not on DJ... I knew where he was throwing it, FSU knew where he was throwing it, and he threw it (poorly) into double coverage.

Re: What is your grade for Tony’s play calling yesterday?

Problem is DJ can’t read a defense so he simply runs whatever play is called. He does not know how to change a play or adjust the blocking scheme based on the D. It’s sad but true.

Re: What is your grade for Tony’s play calling yesterday?

Oct 31, 2021, 5:18 PM

I agree but don’t know if the coaches will allow DJ to change the play or adjust on the fly. I watched DJ’s post game interview and he made it sound like he had to throw that ball that was intercepted. DJ said that was the play call that is where the ball was supposed to go. If I am wrong paraphrasing please correct me, but if I heard what I think I heard then that is a problem and may sum up most of DJ’s problems all year. As the quarterback you have to be able to adjust based on what you see from the defense. Even the shuttle pass has to be abandoned but If DJ went through with the toss because he felt like he had to then wow is all I can say.
