What is your Favorite Dabo Moment?

Feb 18, 2022, 9:43 PM

Football is still a ways away, so to get us through this winter slump, let's reflect on your favorite Dabo moments.

I'll kick us off.

Moment: Dabo suspends Sammy Watkins.

It's 2012. Program is starting to build up steam even after a rough Orange Bowl to end the prior season. We open against Auburn. It really feels like a bellwether game for how his career is going to unfold at Clemson. Lots of eyes on this game, and even more riding on it. What does Dabo do?

Suspends Sammy Watkins.

Absolutely crickets. Now, we know in CF "suspension" usually means "he'll be in trouble, but not until it's a good time for us." Old ######## Coach a little ways down the road had it written on visor. So, I think we all kind of figured that would be the way it was with Sammy. I mean...the game. AND IT'S SAMMY FOR DON MUNSON'S SAKE. WHAT IS HE DOING???

But what he was doing was this. Sending a message. A message that Clemson is different from that other school in SC. Different from Alabama, the SEC, and everywhere else that football comes first, raising good men come second. And, most of all, sending a message to his team that beneath that folksy face is a man that is not going to tolerate breaking the rules no matter who you are.

I was FLOORED.

That is when I knew Dabo was the man for Clemson, and would be here for the long haul. We were already starting to see what he could do as a coach on the field, but now we were going to see what he could do off the field.

And the proof is in the pudding. We have our behavior issues, yeah...but compared to other schools? Not just USuC, but schools at our level? Chad Kelly found out the hard way that Dabo was not bluffing.

That is my favorite Dabo moment.

SEE YOU ALL REAL SOON.

(Close second though was today when I saw this epic old man today pulling into a parking space with a license plate that said "ROY BUS")

Back in 2011, when Auburn came to the Valley, Dabo gets interviewed at halftime. His response to the inane question about snap counts was the moment he molded his coaching reputation with me. It's definitely a "Yes!" moment. Check it out!!

The whole week of the monsoon game with Notre Dame was just built for Dabo. From lugubrious to BYOG, that week just defined Dabo and set us on the road to greatness.

LOL To me Dabo is the kind of guy that walks into a Hooters, orders, blesses the food at the table with everyone watching, and treats the waitress the same as my ol' lady at the Sizzler the whole time.

Giving it to our punter when he tried running for a first down and missed by about 15 yards. It was in the ACCCG against UNC in 2015.

BYOG was right up there but for me it was when Dabo lifted the Lady TV reported in a jubilant bear hug after a big win. Jeanine someythinerother. It was true Dabo and his sincerity and likable manner made the world see it in that very moment. The best part was that she was not offended in any way and was a great sport about it and enjoyed the moment, which says a lot for her, too. You could tell that she appreciated infectious goodness in spirit of Dabo that we all have come to appreciate.

Coach had been named interim and it may have been the Ga Tech game or one of the other remaining homes games that year.
Clemson kicked off and it went out of bounds
The kicker was walking off the field… Dabo sprinted out on the field and was in that poor guys grill so loud we could hear where we were sitting. Yelling and pointing and made the guy run back out and get the tee.
The crowd’s reaction was awesome. That was the moment for me.

When Dabo took the trophy, he didn't even have to think about where it would sit in Clemson's facilities. "We got twins," he said, referring to Clemson's 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy.
