What is your best truthful guess about the progression of

Dec 17, 2021, 9:32 AM

Cade Klubnick at Clemson?

We have seen in the past, no matter what the talent level of a newcomer, they do not immediately start at QB under Dabo. Deshaun did not start over Cole Stoudt, and Trevor did not start over Kelly Bryant. It took a few games for Dabo to feel comfortable enough to make that move. My take is, that IF Cade shows out, he will be elevated to starter by the 4th game, much like Trevor was over KB.

Everyone assumes that this would mean DJ is automatically gone at that point. That is another reason I think the timing would be along those lines. Dabo would do him the same courtesy he did KB, potentially saving him the year as a redshirt / transfer.

It is for that reason that we MUST get some meaningful snaps and evaluation in on the OTHER QBs on the roster. As we saw all too quickly in Trevor's 1st start, we are only one bump on the head away from one of those guys having to pull a Chase Brice and save the game for us.

I think at best he will track like DW4.

I think DJ will be a lot better next season. DJ played more like a true freshman. Unlike TL, DJ didn't have unreal, wr options to bail out a young QB (imagine how much better DJ could be with a Renfrow safety valve) and then a Tee level primary. TL, by the playoff even had other new WR like Ross gel because KB was also getting reps with the first team.

I agree.....

I personally don't think DJ was #1, #2, or #3 reason for our offense being extremely sub-par. Don't get me wrong, he was not great and definitely could've been better for sure, but our Oline, lack of WR talent/play, & playcalling were bigger issues IMO.

Re: I agree.....

I see a lot of comments about the play calling. This was one of the most vanilla offenses Clemson has ran in years and I personally believe it is because DJ cannot read a defensive coverage quick enough to check out of a play and into a new one. He cannot effectively read a defense when running RPO. Much more often than not he made the wrong read. You could tell he was more successful in designed QB runs than RPO.

Sure, the O line didn’t help him out as much as it should but you can stand in the pocket like a statue, you don’t throw with flat feet, you don’t throw at your dump receivers feet, you don’t throw 100mph fast balls on a 5 yard hitch.

Poor poor analysis. Use of the word "all" throws your opinion straight in the trash can.

I think DJ is going to step up this off season and keep his job. He will be healthy. It looks like the OL is getting a lot better (and healthy.) Plus he now sees that we have 3 weapons at running back taking the pressure off him to do to much. Also, people forget, we had a ton of dropped passes during this year. More then we have had in many years past. I think he is just too much of a competitor to not do all he can and redeem himself. Just my 2cents.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

While I also believe that DJ will play much better next

Dec 17, 2021, 9:59 AM [ in reply to Re: What is your best truthful guess about the progression of ]

year, him running an RPO offense is still like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Cade's physical makeup is far better suited to that type of offense, just as DW4 was.

If DJ takes a leap forward it will be because

Dec 18, 2021, 9:26 AM

he simply reads the RPO's and read option much better. He doesn't need to be a game breaker as a runner. Making the right reads moves the chains, and creates big play opportunities for others.

People keep saying our offense was vanilla this year, well this was the reason. What we'd done the prior 6 years was taken away by DJ not executing these base plays. I don't know if he'll do it, but CK looks like a natural at it.

DJ gets first crack, but CK will play a lot early. Dabo will go with the guy who executes best

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Personally, I would like to see DJ break out in bowl game

Dec 17, 2021, 10:04 AM

the same as Stoudt did in Oklahoma game, after being coached by Streeter, then Klubnik would have to be really good to beat him out, or sit for most of year?

Re: What is your best truthful guess about the progression of

I think it depends on both how Cade does in practice and DJ plays in games, and moreso how DJ plays. If DJ isn't significantly better by game 4 or 5 then Cade will probably be elevated to starter IF the coaches think he can do better at that early stage of his development. If not we will most likely see a replay of last year where the staff sticks with DJ until they feel Cade is better AND ready.

Re: What is your best truthful guess about the progression of

Dec 17, 2021, 10:13 AM

First, I hope DJ has a Joe Burrow type of conversion. Burrow was dreadful his junior year and at times he looked like he had never thrown a forward pass. If DJ has anything close to that kind of turn-around he will be projected to be drafted high enough that he will not come back. In the meantime, kind of like Lawrence, I hope if Cade shows well enough in practice that he will get some meaningful snaps .... i.e. Trevor at Texas A&M. Hopefully we will be ahead in games where Cade can get a lot of snaps.

If Cade is as good as we think, he will probably be gone after his junior year, so there is no need to redshirt him, and certainly he will not be content sitting behind DJ for two years. If DJ has another year like this year, it won't matter if he comes back for his senior year because he will likely be sitting on the bench watching Cade.

Starting off with Furman will give staff a chance to see both.... though it will be against Furman. But...hopefully both will get time with the 1's on Oline, backs and receivers. Depending on how acc games line up for the couple of weeks to follow, hopefully DJ will either be in his groove or Cade will have proven his readiness before we get to a game that could challenge us.

We start with GT in Atlanta in Labor Day

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I definitely think that DJ will start and CK will also play

Dec 17, 2021, 10:50 AM

in game 1 but too much is unknown at this point. An ideal situation would be for both to be healthy, improved and ready to roll. Maybe CK can overtake the starting role like Watson and TL but he'll have to earn it and I don't think DJ will transfer unless it's after the end of next season and CK is entrenched as a starter.

Deshaun Watson broke his collarbone during Spring Practice

Dec 17, 2021, 10:53 AM

and missed over a month of workouts. According to Dabo, Cade is faster than Deshaun, which I found pleasantly surprising. Accurate QBs with mobility and speed have a confidence and comfort level in the pocket that immobile QBs lack. DJ has weight, mechanics, footwork, accuracy and decision making issues that have not improved over his first 2 years in the program. I don't see them taking a sudden leap forward.

Here is Dabo after DeShaun was hurt his first Spring: "You hold your breath any time your quarterback is getting hit, but it's what we do," Swinney said before learning the extent of Watson's injury. "Our guys have to run the ball. They have to make plays in the pocket. They've got to make plays when everything breaks down, and that's a critical piece of information we need to make a good assessment of who they are, where they are and what we've got to do to move forward." https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sports/college/clemson/2014/04/08/clemsons-watson-miss-rest-spring-practice/7451609/

Cade seems to have a charisma that draws people. Dabo's comments about Cade were glowing and, being the thoughtful planner that he is, I couldn't help but think he was communicating a message.

I would expect Cade to take over by the 3rd game, if not sooner.

I'm in favor of calling Cade a Freshman for two years,

Dec 17, 2021, 12:01 PM

then he's a Junior, then Senior, if we have him that long.

That way there won't be any of this Sophomore year slump business....................

76er,

You make some good points, but I don't think DJ will provide as much competition for Klubnik as KB did for TL. Unless DJ makes some unforeseen progress this off-season, I think Klubnik could start the first game of the season.

I strongly agree that we need to be working the 3rd string QB to make sure that they are ready to be the 2nd string QB. Even if DJ does not leave, the demotion could further screw with his head.

I think you also have to take into account that we also never had a QB finish the season as poorly and ranked so low as DJ. Cade could very well start game 1 next year. Just look at the stats of every QB you listed and you will see that DJs is no where near them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think DJ will be better next year than people think

Dec 17, 2021, 4:43 PM

and Cade will take longer to develop than people think.

I don’t think we will have much of a QB controversy next year, although I do think Cade will get some snaps in mop up duty (and perform well while in the game).

DJ will be better. Not all-world, Heisman level great, or to the level we saw in his two starts as a freshman, but serviceable enough to the point that Dabo will stick with him as the starter.

DJU: unbenchable...

Dec 17, 2021, 9:11 PM

This year was enough evidence for me to conclude that, barring a major injury, DJU will remain QB1 for the rest of his stay.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DJU: unbenchable...

Dec 17, 2021, 9:35 PM

I personally hope he puts the time in the film room and working on whatever the coaches see as needs of improvement mechanics wise. He never quit this year with all the negativity and the injuries he hung in and for that showed me some great character and leadership skills needed at that position. I believe he has the tools to be as good as anyone.

My guess is if he comes in and shows himself to be that much better he will start at some point. But until he gets here there is no way for us and more importantly the coaches to know where he is developmentally
