What in the world? How soft have the younger poulation

Oct 12, 2021, 12:02 PM

gotten?

College kids used to be the tough backbone of the country...they stormed the beaches at Normandy and formed the fighter flying WACS!!

Now they need safe spaces and luxury apartments to shield them form mental trauma.

Karens, and being soft have nothing to do with mental health.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually being soft leads heavily to mental health issues.

Oct 12, 2021, 1:22 PM

It’s called life and coping and dealing and moving on. It’s called maturity and emotional growth.

Karen’s have emotional issues. Because they are soft and because they have been brainwashed!

Having nothing to say about the first one.
Most mental health patients are not soft, they keep to their self and when they interact, do a great job of covering the pain and hurt. Most people will never see it. Now a days you do have a bunch of soft people, wanting pity and I have it so hard attitude. It is easier to claim mental health issues than putting on your big boy/ girl panties and doing what needs to be done.

Let’s stop with that term.

Oct 12, 2021, 1:10 PM [ in reply to Re: What in the world? How soft have the younger poulation ]

I hate that trope. Not because I’m soft, but because of the fact that it’s openly racist (there is no denying “entitled White woman” is the accepted definition) and therefore shouldn’t be used. It drives me crazy how people think it’s ok to use a racist term to describe someone who they usually are painting as being racist and don’t see the hypocrisy of it. If we want to fix a problem, let’s fix the problem instead of adopting the eye for an eye mentality. We can do better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Shut up you Karen!

Oct 12, 2021, 1:20 PM

Got it must be exhausting going around being offended by so many things every day. People like you need to get a life.

Re: Shut up you Karen!

Oct 13, 2021, 11:49 AM

Why do so many people on here have a problem realizing that there are mental health issues that go well beyond “suck it up and move on.” People have chemical imbalances and serious mental health issues and a lot of young people these days feel scared or ashamed to get help until it’s too late. This is not about being soft or tough… Physically im as tough as they come, but I do have mental health issues and believe me, they can drag you down.

Lol this board can't have it both ways....

On one hand: "OMG these newer generations are so soft we used to be so tough and everyone nowadays is a pansy"

On the other: "Oh noes he called someone Karen!"

That is what happens when government takes the control of raising respectable, discipline, children out of the hands of the parents. The very moment that kids learned that if their parent spank their A$$, they could tell a teacher, or call the police, and have their parents arrested, or have them moved to a foster family with no discipline for a pay check, our youth has went down hill from that point. If you have a better answer to why our youth are the way they are now, lets hear it, but, I firmly believe it started once kids were put in control at an age when discipline was most needed....

People today think words are violence and commit suicide because of social media.

Oct 12, 2021, 1:12 PM [ in reply to What in the world? How soft have the younger poulation ]

I was little for my age before I had a big growth spurt and blossomed into a really good athlete. For a while in middle school I used to have a group of bullies that should’ve been in high school kick my ### every day after school! Despite growing up in a house that looked like an arsenal because my dad was a self-taught gunsmith I never once thought about getting a gun and killing someone much less committing suicide.

The younger population has gotten as soft as the adults

Oct 12, 2021, 2:31 PM [ in reply to What in the world? How soft have the younger poulation ]

that raised them... let's ask the next question, who raised those adults? Would it be those teenagers who stormed the beaches at Normandy and flew the fighter flying WACS?? No wonder, they were so batcrap crazy when they got back home they scared the children into swearing that they would never raise their children the way that they were raised...

It's a vicious cycle...

You know what's ironic about people criticizing America's youth...

They are the parents of said kids...effectively criticizing their own work.

Seems like there was a suicide at Clemson

Oct 12, 2021, 1:38 PM

About once per semester back in the 80s. Class was never canceled but the rumor was the roommate would be afforded A grades and the rest of the semester off. I have no idea if that was true.

When I was growing up a kid at our school killed himself. He had a fraternal twin sister. Rumor was he was afraid of his parents reaction to some bad grades brought home. I always felt really bad for that family and the pain this caused.

Later as an adult we had a neighbor a few houses away take her own life. When I got home the neighbor kids were talking about it. I thought it was made up because an ambulance came to the house but I was really shocked when I learned later it was true and not just some rumor. I have always wondered what drives seemingly normal people to do tha.

That was the rumor (A grades/semester off) when I was there in the late 90s, too. I don't think it's true though - maybe the semester off and a dropped schedule without any "withdrawal" on the record. But it's not beneficial to the student or the university to get an A and a credit without learning the material. That would just set them up for failure the next semester.

A friend killed himself my freshman year at Clemson. (87-88). The A grades for the roomie was just a rumor…

George Carlin identified part of the problem back in 1999

Oct 12, 2021, 2:11 PM

Helicopter parenting that turns children into entitled little cult objects that are always the center of attention will have a bad outcome. The overly-protective child self-esteem movement that started in the 1970's has now evolved into college "safe spaces" where young adults can hide from opinions or speech they don't like that just reinforces the lack of coping skills they should have learned as children.

Suicides do come in waves.

I mean if someone in a community has committed suicide it's frequently followed by others.

I understand what they did from the perspective.

I still see it as more of a cover your ### by the administration and I guarantee you 99% of the students don't care and aren't going to want or need therapy because some person they never met killed themself.

So the Tarholes are canceling the classes that never meet? Got it.

I think they should just hand out 30,000 degrees Magna ### laude and cancel school for the next 4 years.

Re: Wonder how this will affect UNC sports programs

Folks here need to stop worrying about "cancel culture" on this one. Let UNC decide what to do with what works best for them and move on. It might be more than just students.

My better half still works in higher ed and I used to work in the LE/Safety side. The amount of work/hustle that that has to happen behind the scenes is hard on folks, and that is just a staff perspective. There is a lot of contact tracing and follow up. What is require now is a lot different from when I was attending/working 20+ years ago.

My guess is that even staff need time to catch up and address whatever is going on in CH. Considering that most Health and Wellness folks have been doing double-duty non-stop for what, 18+ months, I know staff capacity is reduced, burnout is high and the demands have never been higher.

As folks mentioned, suicides happen in clusters, giving staff time to help does work. Giving time to let resources work helps.
