much like the debate that rages on today....

Apr 29, 2017, 1:29 PM [ in reply to The Indians would be much better off ]

the Indians just didn't have strict enough immigration laws....:~)

but in answer to your discussion question---America wasn't lost....there were several millions of people who lived in what now constitutes the United States. Large cities, empires, civilizations had existed in Central America, Mexico, the American Southwest and in the American Midwest before and during Columbus' time. It was European Caucasian Christian arrogance which described Columbus' voyages (not the earlier Irish, Vikings or Chinese) as "discovering" America.

Columbus never set foot in North America, did he?

Apr 26, 2017, 12:02 PM

And from what I have read, he was a TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE man who purposefully destroyed civilizations.

And he was far from the first to cross the ocean and come to the continent. But he was the first that was government sanctioned and claimed territory for a nation.

You are right. My wife is from Dominican Republic and Columbus is univerally hated there because he and his brother slaughtered the indigenous peoples there. They refer to him as "Colom the #######".

There is a big monument to him there but that was paid for and built by the U.S.

Was Cortez. Who went into the most advanced Native American civilization, the Aztecs and wrecked their civilization. He made up stories about sacrifice and cannibalism to justify his destruction of them

We would have been found by some..

Apr 26, 2017, 12:07 PM

drunken Irishmen, taught us how to make whiskey, speak Gaelic, and left. When they back they would have been too drunk to remember how to get back, and no one would believe them anyway cause they were drunken Irishmen. So we would have been all too drunk to care.

The Vikings reached Newfoundland and established a settlement centuries prior to Columbus's expedition.
