What does Garrett Riley mean with this quote?..

1

Mar 13, 2023, 12:36 PM

"guys getting a million reps at doing the same thing"

It sounds like hes simplifying the play calling, but wasnt it overly simplistic to begin with?

Im not being critical, I just want to understand what hes saying...

I believe Cade spoke on this a week or two ago.

Says that Riley is reducing play count from 80 plays to maybe 30. Wants the offense to be really good at 30 plays instead of average at 80 plays. He did the same thing with TCU's offense and we all saw where it got them.

How do you keep Gamecocks out of your yard?

What does a Gamecock grad call a Clemson Tiger grad in 2 years?
• Boss

ok, thank you. But did we really have 80 plays????

It means you keep repeating things until they become instinctive rather than having to think about them.

Repetition is the key to successful execution...

The theory is that by running the plays so many times, the players will be able to execute without much thought. Long term effects will be efficiency and increased productivity.

I like it. Even if the opposing defense knows what we are doing they can't stop it if our offense runs it effectively.

I'm in the military, and the saying goes.... "Being high-speed is nothing more than mastery of the basics" and "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast".

To be an expert at anything, you need 10,000 hours to take the thought out of it. So it in instinctive and you just go play.

Simplifying the play sheet, simplifying the calls, the reads and the plays allows them to play faster and with less thought. Although I do not like the sports/war comparison... when CK lines up and has a few seconds to determine how the defense is lined up and where he is going to go with the ball after the snap, it requires the same skill and decision making in milliseconds as is required in battle.

I like it.... think less and execute better.

I also remember with TB came to Clemson with Rodriguez in 1999. In 1998, we had a huge offensive line and I remember Corey Husley decided to go early to the NFL b/c we were going to go fast and not huddle. In 1999, we didn't have an O Line over 300 lbs (Akil Smith, TJ Watkins, Kyle Young, Will Merritt, and John McDermott.... will Theo Mugros and Brian Outlaw in there too....). We did not huddle once the entire season...

We ran 10 plays 90%.... Indy 1-10 and they even had to make the "Clemson rule" after the 1999 season b/c when the ball was on our side of the field in short yardage situations, we would have 5 wide on the field and would sub in a jumbo package and the defense had no time to sub. In Indy 1-10, odd numbers were passing, even numbers were runs and Brandon Streeter / Woody Dantzler could "xerox" the play at the line to the other side if the defense was lined up to stop the call.

I remember D Coordinators of the teams would play said they knew what we were going to run, but had no chance to substitute or adjust their defense to stop it....

It was awesome and brilliant.... that year we lost to Marshall (Chad Pennington), FSU (future national champs in the Dillard's game in Bowden Bowl 1), and V Tech (M. Vick) who were all undefeated until V Tech lost to FSU in the Natty.

At the time, that was brilliant simplification and execution.

Reminds me of a great quote that goes something like this....

To be "good", you do it until you get it RIGHT. To be "great", you do it until you can't get it WRONG.

I remember Chad Morris talking like that when he took the OC job. He said that we were going to be “really good” at a couple things. I like the philosophy.

Actually its more than just play calling. Specifically he talked about the WRs not switching sides based on the ball spotted on the left or right hash. Said that would benefit the receiver learning to catch over a particular shoulder. In terms of play calling, there may only be 30-40 plays but each is run out many formations plus many of the plays have multiple of options (assuming a pass with four WRs in the pattern).

Repetition usually means you get better at doing something. Practice in all sports is a good example. The more you practice, the more improvement you see.

kind of like typing in a password. After a while, you don't think about it, you just type it in.

He runs the same plays out of different looks, using motion etc… it’s exactly what his brother does.

Pretty sure it was said that every game had around 80 plays to remember. 80 was the number that jumped out. But also if I understand things properly, those plays swapped sides for skills if they were closer to one hash vs the other. So WR's had to flop sides and the QB had to keep up with flipping if the RB bumped the play 4yds to the left.

But under Riley, he will keep the same lineup majority of the time, therefore lining up faster, knowing routes better and only flipping spots with a new call. This simplifies players and RB responsibilities which allows them to play faster.

It’s just what football teams do this time of year the first

Few weeks of camp is installation. These are your foundational plays that you have to be able to run with your eyes closed so you can go to them when you desperately need a play you know you can execute.

it means they do it so much that it's instinct, no thought required, adjustments can be made on the fly because the basics are ingrained in them as to what their job is... like walking, you don't think about each step, you think about where your going and adjust as the path dictates...
