What are we doing on the NIL front? Are we

Feb 21, 2022, 8:24 PM

keeping up? I just had dinner here in Atlanta with my brother-in-law, who had a five-hour layover on his flight from Montana to Myrtle Beach. He is a P.A. in heart surgery and flies out to Montana, Louisiana, and Arkansas for weeks at a time for hospitals that have shortages in his position. Well, he said he just couldn't stand the thought of sitting in the Atlanta airport for five hours. My wife is a TSA officer there and could have visited with him on her break, but he just wanted to get out of the airport. So I picked him up at the 10th street Midtown MARTA station and we went to dinner before coming to my house for him to freshen up for the rest of his trip.
Anyway, he is a South Carolina fan. He is a very nice guy and a very classy fan. He's taken a lot from me over the years. Over dinner, our conversation eventually made its way to college football. He started that line of conversation. I told him that I'm not sure Clemson is willing to play that game to the level it will take to remain a big-time player. I said that I had seen a lot of down-playing of NIL from Dabo and Clemson. He said that Carolina sure is going to play the game. He said that they have a fund called Garnet Trust and basically sees to it that the players have a set amount of money to be paid even before the season starts. And that it was quite a large among. He said the day that Spencer Rattler signed with Carolina, there was an NIL package waiting. And as we were talking, a tweet came to him that said, "From USC football: Gamecock football players will now have the opportunity to opt-in to monetize on their jersey sales ahead of the 2022 college football season. South Carolina joins a list of select schools that will offer the option for its student-athletes."

My question: What is Clemson doing to keep up in this area?

in basketball is checking to make sure USC is offering more NIL money than Duke and UNCheat and will sign with Frank Martin if they come up with the money- if this isn’t stopped college sports can just shut down and stick to intramurals

Yes, My brother-in-law also told me about that recruit

Feb 21, 2022, 8:45 PM

tonight. And I completely agree with you. I think the power 5 is supposed to meet to pull the reins on this a little, but until then, I think Clemson better face reality and try to play the game. Before it all came out Clemson said something to the effect that we'd be able to compete with the best of them if NIL comes to reality. Well, I'm not sure we are. But you are right. If this continues a lot of people will just be done with college football. I'm glad we got our 2nd and 3rd titles right before all this came about. I can stop with football and be completely satisfied with 3 national titles. But I really don't want it to come to that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Dabo is coming around to some portal stuff...

Feb 21, 2022, 8:48 PM

but if you expect to see him start copying the shady stuff other schools are doing then you don't know Dabo. He'd quit, right now in the prime of his career, rather than taint his brand with everything he's been principlly against just to win games.

If he does not play the NIL game, he will start losing. I

Feb 21, 2022, 8:51 PM

agree with your assessment that Dabo would rather quit than do it, and that is what I'm afraid of.
1. He quits
2. He doesn't quit, but simply refuses to play the NIL game and starts losing.

I'm not sure which would be worse.

Top tier guys were coming to play for us when we still

Feb 21, 2022, 8:56 PM

weren't on the map. Now not only do we have a/THE T1 program, we also have a coach that stand apart from the crowd when is comes to raising boys into men on and off the field. I have to believe there's more than enough talent out there with kids (and most importantly, moms) who value that above all else.

Maybe we will see some higher player stipends, and revenue sharing opps, but nothing like what's goign to be going on for a few years in Texas and the SEC. And maybe we lose some recruits to it. But I'd rather live in Dabo's world than theirs.

Very fortunate to have Dabo and yes I have thought of him packing it in not wanting to deal with this mess. On another note I did see on our main athletic site there is a NIL tab.

the program. Giving guys revenue share opportunities like jersey sales that are directly tied to performance on the field seems like a no-brainer. And, maybe even the Athletic Department would turn a blind eye if boosters wanted to set up a program similar to what is going on in Texas since it doesn't flow directly through them...

But the next few years are going to get shady AF and I don't expect Dabo to follow just to keep up. And that is a blessing, not a curse.

The NIL will not last very long. It makes the corruption

Feb 22, 2022, 10:52 AM [ in reply to Top tier guys were coming to play for us when we still ]

in college athletics seen in the 70's and 80's look like child's play. The NCAA cleaned up most outlaw programs by the late 90's. The problem with the NIL is that the legislation does not have guardrails to prevent schools from taking basketball, football and other college sports programs back to the corruption of the 70's and 80's.

The coaches aren't doing the NIL as much as alumni. It's time for Clemson fans to step up, not Dabo.

#1. I would hate to see Dabo leave- but would understand why he did it.

#2.I would hate to see Clemson fall from the spotlight in football- but again I would still respect the players and the coach for sticking to their guns and letting the education and what they get out of playing the game at Clemson means. I don't have money and most likely never will- I have kids- they struggle as I did- but I don't think I turned out half bad- Thanks Mom, thanks Dad! Other may disagree- but I don't really care what others think of me.

If it is legal, it isn't shady. People might not like it

Feb 21, 2022, 9:27 PM [ in reply to I think Dabo is coming around to some portal stuff... ]

but we can't succeed without doing what other programs are.

If they can't find a way to rein in the NIL, then programs will have no choice to do what other programs do... or fall behind.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If it's legal, it only means it's not illegal.

Feb 21, 2022, 9:47 PM

Doesn't mean it's still not shady. And, Dabo will be long gone before the day comes where Clemson sacrifices its soul to keep up. So a lot of these "win at all costs" types are playing the chicken and the egg game. Do we win with NIL schemes, or do we win with Dabo? Doesn't look like a situation where you can have both.

Feb 22, 2022, 9:01 AM [ in reply to I think Dabo is coming around to some portal stuff... ]

also,......."SHADY" isn't "SHADY" if it's legal.............it only "feels" shady b/c it's been against the rules for so long. There are no rules anymore.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're taking guys from the portal now, aren't we?

Feb 22, 2022, 9:15 AM

Whereas before we haven't? I'm not saying Dabo likes the portal, but that it's being utilized to any degree now, when before it wasn't.

And no. "Shady" is a term that applies regardless of legality, and is used to describe actions and activities that may be unregulated but are still unethical, unsportsmanlike, or generally greasy.

Have thought about that scenario as well. Would be very sad. Just because everyone does it does not make it the right thing to do. At least that’s how I was brought up.

It will take care of itself. Companies and individuals will write big checks for kids all over the country but guess what, there is only 1 Champion in each sport and in time, people will understand they are wasting money. Everyone can't win, not even with money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Amen. Much of this is going to be self-correcting.

Feb 21, 2022, 8:50 PM

It's just hard to see when we're right in the beginning of it all. I don't want to underestimate the rabidness of boosters, but funding these programs year over year, especially if these money-hungry dudes flame out real quick (as we know they do), I think the faucet gets dialed back a bit.

The transfer portal will calm itself down much quicker than the NIL money, and IMO that's the bigger problem.

Alabama and the SEC have been doing that for decades, bro. SMU and the old SWC was doing it back in the 70s and 80s and it's been going on since before I was born. The Aggies bought a player that played with my father in law back in the 30s and he was an AA for them. It's been happening a long, long time.
Football as we know it has always been a myth. Even clean schools have a few alumni that have relationships with players and they give them money illegally. Ask around.

I saw on WYFF 4 last night about the Fanatics deal with Uof7C for sharing profits on jersey sales. Several teams across the country have signed on to that same deal.

I searched and found where Clemson and Fanatics have a deal for selling Clemson gear but couldn't find anything about the NIL Jersey deal. Does anyone know?

You poor souls don't even understand the NIL business. It's not about Dabo, he doesn't have a company that pays a player. It's car dealers, or electronics stores, or grocery chains, or restaurant chains. Dabo has little control over NIL.
