Streeter, Grisham, Spiller, and Austin

Sep 6, 2022, 9:58 PM

We have problems with each position group. We hired from within and also ex-Clemson folk to coach each position.

At what point do we begin to question our offensive direction and production?

GT's offense looked better than ours last night considering who they were up against and this is a staff about to be fired.

Our offense was almost last in the country last year.

Blaming DJ is entirely lazy.

Flame away but production is what matters or is it people's feelings?

What about the others?

Sep 6, 2022, 10:51 PM

What is your excuse there and are you unable to see patterns/trends?

The problem with being a forever pumper no matter the data, is being unable to be critical of the actual production of anything regarding the results losing your credibility to the likes of those who can.

This would help explain your pulse rating and general unlikeability.

Er my gawsh...while i don't disagree with you on trendlines and patterns (i have been historically critical of our O-Line and Playcalling)...it's one game in. Georgia Tech looked better than anyone could have thought, even with their moran of a coach Jeff (with a G) Collins.

This is gonna sound like a turd in a punchbowl for some of your pumper fans, but I honestly believe there was a spark Monday even if it didn't fully ignite. I still think there is a breath of fresh-air in the building with Streeter and Austin (not to mention Eason). Put it bluntly, we were not going to improve under Caldwell (play or recruiting wise) and TE's stale egghead "brilliance" obviously was not in touch with our QB/WR/RB's.

Let's give them a couple games to see what happens. I admit the O-line was not great, but they were better than I expected. I admit DJ was not Superman, but was better than expected. If they suck at the end of the season, then maybe we go get some outside talent...but from where I'm sitting in my cozy arm-chair coach/QB position, I think we are on the up and up without the former coaches (who for the record I still respect and appreciate, they just comfy).

Well, first of all. The coaching staff (even with some of the same personnel) are a new staff in the sense that the coordinators are new, and several of the other coaches have picked up new roles. You've allowed some reasoning to allow Austin some more time to get O-Line corrected since he's just taken over--but I've already been impressed with both his coaching and his recruiting. Spiller is relatively new as well--and I have seen nothing to criticize about his coaching (recruiting chops are too early to judge). I have been have impressed by all three of our RBs. Lack of good stats can be mostly blamed by underperformance of O-line, which I see as work in progress (although I see it improving in the weeks ahead). Streeter has been here for quick some time and was involved in both the recruiting and coaching of our two National Championship QBs, as well as both DJ and Klubnik. I have had no criticism about Grisham previously, either coaching or recruiting over the last 5 years. However, I do now agree I see some drop-off in the quality of some of the WRs we've recruited recently. Still, last year was still mostly injury-related IMHO. This year, I still give him the benefit of the doubt in working with his WRs and the rest of the staff in making our offense more productive.

Sep 6, 2022, 11:21 PM [ in reply to Re: Obviously I hope so ]

We had two blocked punts, an interception, and a lights-out defense.

This is why we won by that score.

If you watched the game, it would be hard to argue our offense doesn't have a lot of the same issues as last year.

Debate the points, pointing to a score is lazy.

An average offense could’ve beaten NC State and Pitt, but would’ve resulted in a sure loss in the CFP.

Just replying to the ‘we were 10-3 with a bowl win so we should be happy’ comment.

I do think with a decent offense we’d have beaten UGa week 1 - that game was there for the taking thanks to the defense. Dont think we’d have faired well in the playoffs though.

Re: Streeter, Grisham, Spiller, and Austin

Did you even watch the game?
To say that GT offense looked better is a joke and or you clearly did not watch the game. Did you happen to notice a Clemson won by 31?
Sims WAS their offense. They had a leading rusher beside him of 30 yards. He scrambled and did a great job. To call it an offensive scheme is strange.
I don’t blame the shortcomings entirely on DJ, but I do blame many on him. Slow decisions cause problems in several places. Receivers open but ball not on time. Or progressions. Or he simply stares down his primary receiver. Slow footed makes the line look worse. Etc.
He did get better. Maybe he makes it maybe he does not.
Taking shots at our coaches and Dabos choices is beyond silly. Do you really think Dabo would not want to achieve success?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

If the QB cannot effectively run the offense, then everything else breaks down. We can make an actuate assessment when CK is firmly entrenched in the position.

Another jab. No, it requires very good QB play.

Sep 6, 2022, 11:28 PM

Do you see below average QB play at Bama, Ohio State, OK, or LSU when they won with Burrow? UGA last year was slightly different in that they owned both lines of scrimmage. (Although that advantage only beat Clemson 10-3 on a defensive TD). Do you think it was there offense philosophy alone?
So name all the great teams of today without a great QB?
Then you surround them with great talent.
Deshaun and Trevor were great, but so were the QBs on Ohio state and Bama, etc.
So what is concerning about that?

Some people are struggling to see how football has changed

Sep 7, 2022, 7:59 AM

The game is so much more about great qb play than it’s ever been. To your point, nobody is winning without a really good qb. It’s not concerning. It’s just the way the game is now. In a way it’s better for clemson, because while they may not be able to sign up 5 stars at every position and stockpile all the top OL in the country like UGA, bama, and OSU, they can still compete as long as they get the right qb. Those other programs can’t stockpile the top 5 or 10 qbs every year

Re: It seems that our offensive philosophy requires generational QB talent

Sep 7, 2022, 7:41 AM [ in reply to It seems that our offensive philosophy requires generational QB talent ]

KB took us to the playoffs and kept it close with Alabama for half of the game. Our offensive philosophy has been to take what the defense gives us, run the QB, and to run tempo when we are getting first downs. We are currently unable to do this.

Re: Streeter, Grisham, Spiller, and Austin

Sep 7, 2022, 6:34 AM [ in reply to Re: Streeter, Grisham, Spiller, and Austin ]

A great QB masks the other issues. Unfortunately, being stubborn and insisting we start a less than average QB (hey, he made a play or two) highlights the other issues.

Someone asked during the 2nd quarter of the GT game if the then dismal QB performance would affect out recruiting. Hopefully not since his last year but, a top tier WR watching Monday night would not say “sign me up for that” especially after seeing the consistent, fluid offenses that played on Saturday.

Early on during last years GT game, I remember the announcers commenting how greatly improved the GT D was. Well, no - it was how far down our offense had slipped.

No worries with Furman and La Tech since weak opponents. However, it will be an issue with Nancy State, Miami and ND. We’d be blood in the water for those D’s.

As for our new coaches and coordinators, give them a chance. It takes time. We’ve had over a year with the QB. Marginal improvement from complete disfunction is improving however, it will not get us to the ACC title or the CFP.

2024 white level membermilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Correct

Sep 7, 2022, 8:04 AM

And just like a great qb masks issues, a poor one inflames them or creates issues that otherwise wouldn’t exist. Everything revolves around the qb. Saying so isn’t lazy. It’s just a fact

Re: Streeter, Grisham, Spiller, and Austin

Sep 7, 2022, 8:04 AM

Streeter- I want to wait and see how he does with Cade running the offense. I think he is playing to the limitations of our offensive line and DJ's abilities and our WR's inabilities to challenge and catch the ball in one on ones. Second half we adjusted play calling and it appeared to loosen up as DJ finally looked alright.

Spiller- I have not been impressed by his coaching or his recruiting. He is a great guy and met him several times over the years. However, it is about production and I just do not see it yet.

Grisham- There were a lot of injuries last year and the WR's looked pretty bad. GT receivers were getting open on our world beating defense. Recruiting has slipped slightly but NIL plays a big part in that. Hard to get a Ferrari on a Corvette budget. All that being said, I still feel inconclusive on whether he is a bad hire.

Austin- First game. Recruiting great. Time will tell. Glad to see a change and ultimately I think he will be an asset.

In summary, CJ is the only one, at this point, who is on the hot seat. The others have literally just started their jobs and are learning. Like most things in life, there are multiple layers that affect everything.

Go Tigers! Here is to hoping all is fixed and we playing on the last Monday of College football.
