Weslicheck vs Venables

I realize one game doesn’t give us much to work with but curious what difference might be in play calling BV vs Wes? Do you think Wes will be as aggressive as BV? Will D look different in any way?

Well, moving on and answering your question..I say it’s not answerable but considering WesliCHECK (<~is that for real) will be less animated on sidelines for sure but it’s said he’s been the main brain behind BV due to his extensive scouting reports & collected data on not only of each opponent But on each starting offensive player..thus, we may be in for some good times..and hopefully continued blitzes

keep alot of rushing. Now, I love BV and did an amazing job here obviously. One thing I started getting nervous about is how occasionally we seemed off guard and out of sorts at the line, waiting for call to come in. Now, I get that football has become more where the offensive lines up to see how you'll line up, checks/calls etc/changes plays at line. So that is going to mean more uncertainty when you line up then ever before. However, and this may be wishful thinking, I'd hope there is some default D that you go into that even if you're waiting for a call, then if nothing else you are prepared to do x, y, or z. Don't know if that's feasible given nature of today's game.

Love Brent V but he wasn’t perfect. HUNH seemed to catch his defense off guard at times even against bad teams. For all the credit he gets for his part in our national championships it was the busts that cost us the NC game in 2015 and almost cost us the game in 2016. TEs and RBs have often been left wide open in big games repeatedly. Venables has been a huge part of the success here but at times was vulnerable. Of course I don’t say any of this to take away from his accomplishments and I wish him well. Without his defense this season as well as 2014 would’ve been disastrous. Best defensive coordinator in the country the last few years hands down but certainly not invincible.

Yep, and somebody tell Venables that the TE is eligible to receive. That Alabama game was lost because Venables let OJ Howard run free all night. He was definitely far from perfect.

Coach wes ,was the staff member that was watching film of Clemson’s opponents breaking down what coverage would be best set for offensive formations so he will do the same, I think he has a good grasp on what defense is more effective, based on formations tendency based on the down and how much yardage is needed . Yes I think he knows what he’s doing, everyone just needs to remember that Coach DS is the one that has made the hires and the staff that needed to be dismissed , this isn’t Coach DS first time of putting Coaching together,Coach Wes knows what he is looking at, just needs some experience calling it from the side line. I do not think Coach Wes will choke, confidant in understanding of how much pressure aggressiveness. We have a good one I believe

I have heard Wes is very aggressive but time will tell. I am not worried being it seems he has been very involved with BV for years. I am more worried about losing Skalski on the field as far as leadership and almost being a coach out there. I hope he makes it in the next level but if not I hope he is brought back as a coach. I think he would be awesome as a LB coach to start.

This goes along with the comments about hurry up offenses and looking out of sorts.
I think Skalski probably kept that confusion to a lower level. Who will step in and direct the D at the last seconds before snap.
Not a BV criticism, really, I think most defenses get scattered when an O suddenly goes hurry up.

Just wondering. Belichick's name was anglicized in his family's preceding generation from Bili?i?. Making it easier for American's to pronounce, I assume. Given that, should not we spell Wes Goodwin WES-LICICK to avoid confusion with Chicks and Checks and Sicks.

It will be interesting to watch. In the bowl game it was my impression he did not bring the house and kitchen sink (wholesale blitz) as much as BV often would on obvious passing downs. I thought he played more coverage and disguised targeted blitzes. More of an NFL style it seemed. Of course that could’ve just been because of the competition? They had a very good QB who could make us pay, so hard to tell if that difference was situational or philosophical. I think he will do well.

That was my impression as well, I’m looking forward to seeing how Wes evolves and how we look under his leadership.
