"A play away from success"

Mar 27, 2022, 7:59 PM

If we actually defend Va Tek properly on the last play - an increased budget would've solved this - we win the ACC, are better than Duke, could be in the Final Four.

Be glad you are not billionaire; because if you were a billionaire, your taxes would be going up. (Actually, since most billionaires don't pay ANY taxes, the percentage increase of their taxes paid would be infinitestimal !

What a sad day for billionaires -- you can never have too many villas, Boeing 787 planes, or $100M floating castles.

I just don't see a problem with billionaires contributing to the costs of roads, bridges, national defense and other govt functions. Have good accountants is not affordable to most Americans at tax time.

Well, Virginia Tech does spend a lot more than we do

Mar 27, 2022, 11:25 PM

each year on men’s basketball.

We spend $7.9 million a year, and they spend $10.3 million a year.

It’s not unreasonable to think that those dollars bought them some better assistants or training aids or recovery treatments that helped them.

Of course, what your snarky and unproductive comment fails to mention is that Brad told them during the timeout not to give up a three. Late game situations like that is something they work on in practice. Players still have to execute.

If you’re going to blame Brad for that, perhaps you are more interested in criticizing him than you are being a reasonable fan.

Yes, that’s exactly why I blame Brad.

If the players a coach recruits, fail to do what the coach supposedly coaches them to do in practice, and fail execute what the coach coaches them to do during a timeout, then the coach is ultimately to blame.

If the players are to be blamed, what is the point of the coach?

We should just save the $2.5 million per year, have a HORSE tournament at Fike to manage the roster, and let the team draw straws to determine who calls the plays during the games.

Money doesn’t buy success in Basketball, I’m sure we put more money in Basketball than VT in the last 5 years considering the money we put in the facilities & etc.

Include all the money spent, we did save some money by using an existing building and we added a sound system and video boards/scoreboards etc.

It would be easy for everyone if it was all about spending money. If Brad had won the ACC tournament and made more trips to the Tournaments Clemson would have paid him accordingly.

Dabo is the 2nd best coach in Football and he gets paid accordingly but he didn’t start there.

This discussion isn’t about what the head coach makes.

Mar 28, 2022, 12:58 AM

Brad is paid fairly for the job he has done.

It’s Clemson’s funding of most of the other aspects of the program that has been lacking.

There is a reason why elite players have never chosen to come to Clemson, regardless of who the coach is. There is a reason why Clemson basketball has never had consistent success, regardless of who the coach is. Do you want to know what it is? Funding for the program by Clemson’s administration.

That is why Neff’s letter was so exciting to me. He actually said that basketball is important. He stated high goals for the program. And he recognized that more funding is needed.

his peers in those close games that make or break seasons. No stat or comparison will excuse this painful and consistent season-killing deficiency that he has displayed from season one through season twelve since he's coached ACC-level basketball. This is the root of the frustration and disappointment that has defined his era here, for both players and fans.

Improvements in NIL opportunity, which is new, and occurring at every single major institution, will only serve to keep us current, not accelerate. I read nothing in his letter that addressed further funding outside of our normal growth in supporting athletics overall, only that he wouldn't be 'settling' for how our basketball program has performed over the years, and that it has greater scrutiny now with an AD that expects us to be a winning program here, commensurate with so many of our other sports programs.

Mar 28, 2022, 2:30 AM [ in reply to Well, Virginia Tech does spend a lot more than we do ]

What is the 2.4 million dollar difference? Brad isn't telling us what he wants. I haven't heard him say anything about wanting to bring in a top quality assistant or expanding the support staff. He shouldn't be asking the AD. He should be talking directly to the Alumni, this is a revenue sport.

If Dabo sent an email to David Hood tonight saying he didn't like Neff, we would have an AD search by tomorrow afternoon.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brad isn’t telling you what he wants because he isn’t going to pull a Danny Ford

Mar 28, 2022, 2:45 AM

and complain publicly about the administration not giving him what he wants. He is too smart and too respectful to do that.

The coach’s vision is only important if the administration is in agreement. Clemson wanted Dabo to go public with his vision because Clemson’s administration shared that vision. Let’s be honest, selling Clemson administrators on football success wasn’t hard.

Selling Clemson’s administration on basketball success? That’s tough, especially when they start hearing the coach say what amount of investment it will take for that to happen.

That’s why Brad had to largely raise the funds for the new facilities himself.

Given Neff’s public statements about wanting more success for basketball and wanting to fund it better, you’ll see Brad given the green light to talk more about his vision for the program.

Don’t assume that Brad doesn’t have a vision just because you haven’t heard about it.

Re: Brad isn’t telling you what he wants because he isn’t going to pull a Danny Ford

Mar 28, 2022, 2:56 AM

Communicating a vision is the most important thing Brad can do. The vast majority of Clemson fans/alumni/supporters believe there is no vision for the basketball program beyond more of the same.

There's difference between complaining about not being supported and driving support through communicating a vision. It's actually pretty easy to link this support to tangible positions. I/E Dabo firing Steele and going out and getting the best DC available in the country or wanting to add a wing to the football complex to support whatever function he wants.

We don't hear this from Brad. I think it's because there isn't a vision and more demands will breed more expectations which is what he really is afraid of.

Respectfully disagree. I truly do not understand your constant defense of a lifelong mediocre coach. It is 2022. America has changed. Love who you want to love I hear. But please dont allow love to be blind. I argue to say he has done more damage to the fanbase than any coach we have had in basketball. To know almost every close game we will find a way to lose, to know we will lose games we should win, and lastly never see the tourney is pitiful and makes each year harder for me to support or watch basketball.
It is kind of like cheering for your kids in sports. When they are done playing you lose interest. Since we never are in the conversation of meaningful basketball it means I rarely watch March Madness now. It used to be a holiday for me every year . Now it is just a reminder that Clemson is not there and hope has once again vanished.

Look, you can continue to expect us to be consistently good at basketball on a low budget if you want to. But I personally believe that shows a huge lack of awareness and understanding of how major college athletics work.

If you truly want to see Clemson basketball excel like
it never has, you will be in full support of giving our players and coaches every advantage to be successful.

Virginia Tech is ranked #305 out of 1,472 for value nationwide. Virginia Tech is priced competitively when compared to other colleges of similar quality.
Virginia Tech is ranked #75 among National Universities. Schools are ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence.
However, the Virginia Tech Hokies men's basketball team is an NCAA Division I college basketball team competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

calling someone else "snarky". And it was all humor/troll start to finish, but b/c of your "snarkiness" you actually took the post seriously. Sense of humor? Definitely not JK's strong point. Added to this, you revolved back to - of all things - coaching and execution - rather than play the "we're not funded enough" card. Which will you be, JK? Are you "execution/coaching" or are you "fund better". Quite a bit of vacillation on your part. Decide what you will be and stick to it, instead of bending with every wind that blows. Oh yeah, and stop criticizing the football program, a lot of people have figure out your hypocrisy.

They play more ACC and NCAA Tourney games, so hotel plus travel will make their budgeted expenses higher. Might not be quite as big a spread.
