Spurrier says LSU the first Death Valley

Oct 9, 2012, 2:40 PM

Was listening on the radio when Spurrier said the quote about Death Valley... He also asked which school had Death Valley first? And then Answered his question with LSU.

Guess Spurrier needs to get his facts straight.... Clemson had Death Valley first.

Didn't hear that part. Did he really say they were first?***

From wickipedia's site about tiger stadium at LSU!

Tiger Stadium is well known nationally for having among the best game day atmospheres in college football as well as being one of the most difficult places for an opposing team to play. In the 1980s, a reporter called Tiger Stadium "DEAF Valley,"[citation needed] as a play on words relating to Clemson's "Death Valley," which was coined as such in the 1940s by an opposing coach.[6]

From wickipedia's site about memorial stadium at Clemson:

Death Valley

The term "Death Valley" comes from the fact that the field is physically situated in a valley. But two additional facts also add to the mystique. First, the university cemetery sits on a hill that once overlooked the field before the upper decks were constructed. The other reference comes from the late Lonnie McMillian, the former football coach at Presbyterian College. He told sports writers in 1948 that he had "to take his team up to Clemson and play in death valley" where they rarely scored or gained a victory.[5] The nickname stuck to an extent, but when Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard started calling it that in the 1950s, the nickname really caught on. The nickname was solidified when Frank Howard received what came to be known as "Howard's Rock" from an alumnus, S.C. Jones, who had picked it up in Death Valley, California.
