USC fans complaining about Clemson's soft schedule....

Jan 27, 2020, 10:45 AM

..... reminds me of Gator fans complaining about FSU's schedule being soft in the 90s.

Common Gator post on a Seminole message board: "Our strength of schedule is tougher than yours."

My response: Of course it is. You play us, which raises your strength of schedule. We play you, which lowers ours.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ask 'em why they left the ACC to begin with.

Jan 27, 2020, 10:48 AM

Then remind why they had to.

They couldn't compete with the academics.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly...

Jan 27, 2020, 10:59 AM

The league raised the academic standards for all member institutions and uof6c (particularly Frank McGuire) got upset because they couldn't continue a long standing practice of admitting a bunch of borderline illiterates.

lol.

FSU played some pretty strong teams in the 90's, UFla., Miami, Notre Dame, USC and others. A lot of great rivalry games during that run!

BBowden got FSU on the map by going everywhere and beating top programs on the road.

Understand that FSU is not as committed/supportive of football as a top program needs to be, is why Jimbo went looking. He left for big bucks but that wasn't the real reason, he just didn't have the support to compete.

Bobby also turned down offer to join SEC, said he had enuf SEC teams on his schedule, didn't need any more as his goal was Natty.

USCe simply cannot compete in SEC, w/ Clem and UGA nearby they can't recruit. Every year they play UGA and UF, now national powers and recruiting extreme, and also Tamu which will become a monster as they have everything going with commitment and are w/in 200 mi of 4 of the 11 largest population cities in USA where football is king.

Muschamp probably gone and don't see how they can get a top coach for any amount of $$$$$$$$.

For now into the foreseeable future Clem has killed their rival.

Jan 27, 2020, 11:38 AM

About the schedule either. Big time, five star players deserve more. Drop he Wofford. Drop the Akron’s. Drop the Charlottes. Big time teams don’t play sisters of the poor! imo

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think if we did that

Jan 27, 2020, 11:54 AM

we would actually win more Nattys over the next ten years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Scheduling is an extremely difficult

Jan 27, 2020, 12:07 PM

Task for the AD and I don’t envy him at all for having the opportunity to find teams to play Clemson at home. But, as a fan, it’s difficult to have someone ask who Clemson is playing this weekend and you say Akron. The look that I get from that answer is not very pleasing. Bama and others do it but I’m not concerned with those characters. We are stuck with what we have so let’s luve with it. We are going to hear weak schedule for years to come so ... just win big Tigers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Scheduling is an extremely difficult

Jan 27, 2020, 3:38 PM

How does anyone know they will be weak at this point. Teams like FSU or GT could rise up and be highly rated in a few years. They are programs that have all won Natty's in the past.

Fully Agree.

Scheduling ND, UGA and LSU is a good thing.

LSU doing same over time, Oregon, UTx, OU, Clem etc etc.

LSU fans want LSU to drop the softies too but realize that easy cheap ($$$$$$$) wins to full stadium pays the bills and gets bowl games even in down years.

Wish The Committee that selects for The Playoffs would step it up and say that such scheduling will downgrade a team's standing, and that goes for LSU and bama as well as CU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’m not that crazy

Jan 27, 2020, 7:05 PM

Is LSU and Bama going to start scheduling two P-5 opponents ever year in addition to 8 conference games? Clemson has been doing that for years and most from the SEC. South Carolina every year and one other game (either Georgia, Bama, Auburn, Texas A&M, TCU, Notre Dame). Seen quite a few SEC teams (and ACC) schedule 3 or 4 cupcakes OOC where CU only plays 2. Don't get the gripe from the media on Clemson's schedule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I’m not that crazy

Jan 28, 2020, 12:22 AM

Your argument falls short when Georgia and Auburn played 5 or 6 teams that were better than anyone on Clemson's schedule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Heads up! SCAR isn't one of those 5-6 teams.

Jan 28, 2020, 6:31 AM

You are talking about the undisputed #2 team in the nation last year. Any questions?

Jan 28, 2020, 8:21 AM [ in reply to I’m not that crazy ]

I beg to differ...

Alabama 2020 - Georgia St., Kent St., UT Martin
OSU 2020 - Bowling Green, Buffalo
OU 2020 - Missouri St., Army
LSU 2020 - UTSA, Rice, Nicholls

While the "sisters of the poor" don't provide marquee match-ups, they do help us develop valuable depth.

There is ZERO excuse to play an FCS school. None. It needs to stop. Oh but we are helping the little in state schools. So what? When did that become a mission of Clemson University?

Jan 28, 2020, 9:00 AM [ in reply to "Big time teams don’t play sisters of the poor!" ]

It's not a mission but it's a good thing. I'd much rather play the Citadel or Furman or Wofford than Kent St. And evidently the NCAA approves of it because they allow 1 FCS win to count toward bowl eligibility.

Tamu will, unfortunately for LSU, become a monster. They have the $$$$$$$$$, commitment and recruiting area full of talent.

When LSU wanted to do a $200mil stadium expansion, LSU booster club had to float a bond issue which had to be approved by a Legislative Oversight Committee. When Tamu wanted to do a $400mil expansion they reached in their back pockets and had it ready.

Tamu offered Aranda $3mil/yr for DC. They are already paying Jumbo on a 10 yr 75 mil contract. They have the $$$$$$$$$ and will spare no expense.

The mojority of top TX recruits left the state. All they have to do is get 1/3 of TX talent and they are set.

IMO it ain't if, it's when.

TAMU and Texas definitely don’t lack money, recruits, or commitment. Not sure if current coaches will be the ones to get them there or be given the time.

TAMU money means nothing. They've always had it. They've never won anything. I think they've won 1 Big 12 title since 1990.

They have too many cooks in the kitchen with that program. Same with Texas.

Jimbo was on a sinking ship because he lost all discipline with his teams, easier to have that mentality in the SEC because coaches more likely to turn and look away.

Jan 27, 2020, 3:06 PM

Oh yeah... real soft schedule... yet when’s the last time they beat an ACC team? They beat the #3 team in the Nation last year from their league. However, when they played the #3 team in the nation from the lowly ACC they lost by 35. Coulda been more, but Clemson got bored running over the already dead roadkill over and over again. How’d UNCheat go for them? UVA? Don’t they still have a losing record with Duke in football?

Look in the mirror first before criticizing others in football, birdbrains.

Let me ask you this honest question

If Alabama played Clemson's schedule last year then there is no doubt the Tide would have finished undefeated and made the playoffs.

If Clemson played Alabama's schedule would the Tigers have made the playoffs?

Doubtful.

Beating LSU and at Auburn to end the season was 10 X the challenges of anything Clemson saw all season long.

Clemson would have lost at least one of the two games and not played in the playoffs.

That is the difference between getting a free walk through the ACC and having to be better than everyone in the SEC every year.

It has nothing to do with the Gamecocks and their below-average program but about having to get up every week and win 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 challenging games to play in the playoffs. Because of the dumpster fire that is the ACC, Clemson can play half-assed, and still win over overmatched crap teams and make the playoffs.

Doesn't mean Clemson is not a great program, Clemson is probably the best in the country over the past 5 or 10 years. But Clemson would not have all those playoff appearances if they played a grinding schedule each week instead of only having to get up for a single game or 2 each year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well said, Mr. Brett, like always.

Jan 28, 2020, 12:45 AM

You can't assume that either way. The schedule is what it is and we dominate it. It's one thing to get to the playoffs but another thing to win it like we have not once but TWICE. So I guess you are saying the teams we beat in the playoffs are soft too. Tell me another team better than Clemson that deserved to be in the playoff over us. That's what I thought. You don't have to worry about Wofford winning anything anytime soon even with their pansy schedule that is a fact.

You guys that say this stuff seem to forget that there are recruits that only want to play in the SEC. If Clemson was in the SEC who knows what kind of recruiting classes Dabo could bring in each year. This staff has proven they can win with less because we were the least talented team each year we have been in the playoffs if you go by recruiting rankings except maybe Notre Dame.
