We were told before the season that the SEC was the

best conference, so good that five of the 10 best teams in the whole country were from this same conference. This much was a forgone conclusion. Therefore, if another team beats one of them, then that team must be one of the best 10 teams in the country. As it happens, the only real teams the members of that conference plays, for the most part, are teams within their own conference, so a loss is almost certainly a loss to another SEC team, which automatically means the loser was beaten by a team from the best conference in the country, and therefore the winner is probably a top 10 worthy team. Losses by non-SEC teams are then likely to hurt worse than losses by SEC teams. It is a form of circular logic, and in this way it was predetermined that the SEC would have a lock on the top 10, and most likely the top 5. A self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts.

If this were all the result of voters basing their opinions on what they have observed on the field and on actual results as opposed to what they are fed non-stop, it would be one thing. However, it is an undeniable fact that it was all set in motion in large part by the ESPN advertising machine, the 800-pound gorilla who happens to have a vested interest in the SEC to the exclusion of all others, and the influence they wield over voters, whether it is conscious or subconscious.

In politics, it would be like having one and only one TV network, and that network having an exclusive contract with one of the political parties to promote that party, while having no such agreement with any other.

I understand that college football is a big business, but anyone who can't see the obvious unfairness and danger this presents to the spirit of competition and college athletics is either lying or an idiot.

So do you not think they are the best conference? And what do you honestly think clemsons record would have been with USC's schedule. I think we would be 9-3 right now, at best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe, them or the Big 12. But it doesn't follow that the

best conference should automatically have so many teams ranked so highly. And I think we'd still be at least 10-1 with SCU's schedule.

The SEC is a premier football conference; but the influence of ESPN is certainly a factor in just how good they are perceived to be.

Re: You forget that the SEC is the ESPN's brand

Nov 18, 2012, 6:48 PM

Didn't you get that memo??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know how I overlooked that.

Probably would not be a problem if the ACC wasn't a bunch of below average teams.

A coot is not necessarily someone that disagrees with your opinion.

Nov 18, 2012, 7:15 PM

so I'll try to explain slowly.

He is not saying that the SEC is a bad conference, but how we go about choosing top teams has serious flaws. There are a number of strong teams in the SEC, but by playing a weak out of conference schedule (with the exception of certain rivalry games) causes a mis-measurement in the quality of the SEC teams.

He wasn't saying the ACC is the best or the SEC is terrible, he was just explaining the flawed logic of a top 10 ranking of every SEC team with a pulse.

Thank you***

You hit the nail on the head...but don't see that anything

Nov 18, 2012, 7:19 PM

will change...you could almost hear the joy in all of the announcers voices last night when their beloved SEC got back into the picture. Personally I think Oregon would spank every team in the SEC and I think that FSU/CU could hang with any of them.

If we can prove it on the field

Nov 18, 2012, 7:23 PM

with Clemson and FSU beating their SEC rivals, then I think the rest of the nation will see. And if, somehow, Wake and GT pull off the upsets then ESPN and the SEC hype would be silenced.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great points. The beautiful thing is

Nov 18, 2012, 7:23 PM

that we (the lowly ACC) can put a serious dent in that image this upcoming weekend. I think we and FSU blow out our SEC cousins. And I wouldn't be shocked to see GT take out UGa.

the integrity that is.sure the ratings are up.but with the constant bias that is plaguing college football it is becoming worse than the nfl.

Smiling Tiger, I'm a fan of your posts BUT ...

SEC and ACC bowl results have a great deal to do with the love ESPN shows. ESPN is riding a winner. There was a day ESPN and the natl media favored the Big 10, Pac 10 and the Big 12, and the SEC was the Southern Redneck Conference. No more. Even New Jersey Nick can figure out SEC is faster, stronger and more violent in big games.

There is only one way to destroy the SEC. On the field. Not on T-Net. FSU beats UF. Clemson beats SC. That would be a start. Then we will match up against LSU, TX A&M or UF in bowl. Then UGA 1st game next year. It's in Clemson's hands to gain some natl respect. Even if SEC hammers us in the next 3 games, many T-Netters will be raising #### about how over rated the SEC has become. I love the Tigers and remember when we were great. We are improving but far from great (i.e. Defense). SEC is beatable this year with ALABAMA slightly down but in my estimation, they are still better than ND and other contenders.

I would love FSU to beat UF and end up in BCS NC and Clemson to beat SC then SEC in Sugar or Chick-Fil-A Bowl, but I see this as hope not a probability.

So anyway, keep up the good posts and take care ...

Good points. The media has always influenced rankings,

Nov 18, 2012, 9:50 PM

and it wasn't always ESPN promoting the SEC - I remember those days too.

I still don't like ESPN having both tremendous influence and a vested interest in one conference, but I wholeheartedly agree that we must start beating them on the field - no two ways about it.

Thanks for a good response. Now let's get started beating those SEC teams this Sattidy!
