We visited NY one summer a few years ago & went to Brooklyn

Mar 8, 2022, 8:04 PM

We were to eat at Juniors (which they showed earlier) . Two women almost got in a fight on the subway. Plus a beat cop suggested we might want to not go walking around in the surrounding neighborhood

My youngest son and his fiancé, both 25 years old, both took jobs Manhattan. They are two TN raised kids, and are one step above their entry level in their careers. After both sets of parents expressing concern about the culture differences, and all the other concerns about trying to live in the big apple.

They found a one bedroom apt in Brooklynn above a market/deli that was owned by the Deli owner. No air conditioning, 4 story walk up (jeesh), but with a view of Manhattan skyline from their one BR. This was in Brooklyn and a block from the train. They sold both of their cars, rented a small Uhaul truck and moved to Brooklyn. They have been their 3 years, and both have done fantastic with their careers, and have recently found ways to both transfer to Atlanta to get back closer to home.

Knock on wood , there have been zero incidents. My son, has done system designs for UN dignitaries, politicians and people from all walks of life. These are all in home consultations. Mostly Manhattan high rises. He has stories that will last for a lifetime. He had a Subway/Train pass as part of his compensation and they both used public transport as their sole means of transportation. They found Clemson viewing parties inthe city for several games, when Covid allowed. His fiancé is in PR and by agreeing to go to NYC early in her career she made huge contacts and believes that that she probably leap frogged many pears that stayed in small markets.

Anyway, I say this because i don't know that I would have taken the leap that they took. BTW that 1 BR 4th floor walkup was about 500 SQft and rented for 1950.oo month. they both received huge cost of living increases to move up there, but netted a pretty big budget deficit. Taxes are absolutely crazy.

They would not trade the experience for anything.

Maybe we were lucky, but we had no problem in Brooklyn while visiting NY a few years ago. Took the subway from Manhattan over to Brooklyn for lunch at a local bar and grill, took pictures with the Manhattan Bridge in the background, then walked back across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan with the view of the city skyline in front of us. Of course it ain't Clemson, but it's all they got.

When I was in service, our ship was scheduled for the ship yards. Several locations had put in bids, one being in Brooklyn. An old senior chief told me; if we go to Brooklyn, hone up on your hand to hand combat skills, cause you’re gonna need ‘em. And that was over forty years ago. I can only imagine how bad it is now.

This is where O'Malley wanted to build a new stadium for the Dodgers. When Moses,a wheel with the city,
wouldn't allow it, O'Malley pulled up stakes and moved to LA.

With 8 million residents and probably a million outsiders in New York every day they are good and bad parts of the city. The same can be said about pretty much all large cities.

I'm partial to NYC as well. My work office is Downtown on Water St and a 10 minute subway ride to the Barkley Center. Before Covid hit, I took in a few Clemson games over there. I even had a nice conversation with Pres. Clements after meeting him on the concourse a couple years ago. Beautiful arena that i hope to be back to soon.

Just got back from NYC

We walked all around from 28th to 50th, Broadway Times Square to Hudson Yards. I never felt threatened. Although, the homeless/mental health problem does appear to be worse than 5 years ago. They had a news segment about it, no answers. There were a lot of pitiful cases.

On the first day, there was a Pro-Ukraine "parade"/war protest in Times Square. It was a little chaotic for this country boy. And of course there was a small group of pro communist/Russia protesters. I think these were Liberal Elites paid by the Russians to stand out there. I'm not sure Russia is even communist anymore anyways.

Subways were safe. Times Square is Times Square. You watch where you're going and keep your wits about you and it's a fun time. I wouldn't suggest alcohol because it makes you an easy target.

Overall, we saw lot's of cool stuff at the MET. Got to eat lots of good food, and walked it all off. I like going every now and then.

Oh and gas was $7 at the pump.
