SlingTV or PlayStation Vue?

Oct 4, 2016, 6:20 AM

I've had DirecTV, AT&T U-verse and Charter service over the years and I'm sick of fighting with them about rate increases.

Trying to decide between SlingTV (with the sports add-on) or PlayStation Vue. Anyone had experience with either service?

We tried the SlingTV trial and I was a little disappointed.

If you're single or only watch TV together, you are probably alright. But technically with SlingTV you can only stream on one device at a time. Sometimes it would let us stream multiple and sometimes it would not.

We went with the Charter Stream App. $20 a month but for sports you only get ESPN, so that kind of sucks. And the programming is extremely limited. But I couldn't get ABC with my antenna and wanted it, so Charter it was.

I couldn't get ABC with rabbit ears but I put a directional antenna in my attic and was able to get it.

Biggest advantage I see to Vue is you can have 5 streams at once and use DVR. Works out to $5 more per month.

Got SlingTV this fall for football and it's OK

but not great. Streams can get wonky on the ESPN channels even with plenty of bandwidth. A lot of Clemson soccer games on ESPN3 are a bonus...but again...can get wonky, especially if somebody else is on the wifi.

I'm very very close to going with VUE. My DirecTV bill is

due soon, I will probably flip my lid and cancel them at that time.

Re: SlingTV or PlayStation Vue?

Vue is awesome, I used the middle tier. It had all the channels I needed as a bachelor. ESPN suite, most of the local Fox Sports Channels (FS1, FS2, Fox Sports South, Fox Sports Carolinas), NBC Sports (Premier League), you can use it on Fire TV or Playstation, they may have added a Roku app as well. If they don't have an app on the device you use, your PS Vue login can be used on other apps, (NBC Sports, WatchESPN, Fox Sports To Go, etc.). The DVR works pretty well, however depending on your device, you might not have a lot of space to record shows. My only two minor complaints were you can't flip channels, you have to choose what you want to watch from a guide, no biggie, but makes it not feel like true tv I guess. My other complaint was there are no local channels, you can use ABC, NBC, Fox, on demand, but it's not the same as watching it as a local channel. Overall I'd recommend it, I don't use it anymore because I got access to a friend's DirectTV login and use the other apps described above and use KODI to stream the other things I want to watch. If I didn't have that option, I'd go back to VUE in a heartbeat.

To add, the reason I didn't choose sling at the time is that didn't have NBCSN and that was essential to me for Premier League games. I think they do have NBCSN now though, however I liked VUE a lot and would still choose it over Sling.

Looking at going with Sling. The two packages together are $40. You can stream 3 devices concurrently on anything except the ESPN group, Disney, and I think one other. Before changing am going to make sure that an antenna will get ABC out of Asheville.
Altogether will save about 100/month

Do you care about picture quality and sound?

Oct 4, 2016, 10:00 AM

If not, go with Vue.

Vue has better picture and sound quality than my Dish did***

It wasn't 4k quality by any means, but it didn't

have a bad picture. Vue is slightly better.

Direct TV is also now owned by AT&T. Have fun with that. The company I worked for just got a notice from a collections agency regarding our cancellation fee from AT&T....THAT WE PAID IN 2015.

Switched to Vue last week

Oct 4, 2016, 10:03 AM

I'm streaming through a PS3 and my guide is a little erratic. I've got fire tv on the way, and I'm hoping that solves the problem. I've had no issues streaming though, very good picture quality, and all the channels we need.

I'd recommend the week trial and see what you think, once you get used to it it's pretty nice. Having the channels in alphabetical order is refreshingly logical.

If you are insistent on cutting the cord, I wood definitely

Oct 4, 2016, 10:29 AM

go with Vue as I've heard much better things about the streaming quality and reliability.

Started a 7 day trial of Vue last night
