We signed a full class this last signing period, correct?

Oct 13, 2021, 2:28 PM

For those adamant about signing transfers, who should we have NOT signed in order to sign a transfer-portal guy?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe we signed 25 in 2020 and 18 in 2021.***

T-Net posters like to make “clever” comments like this, but rarely follow up with any explanation.

I'll follow up with an example.

Oct 13, 2021, 5:18 PM

We lost 3 Offensive lineman the last 2 years, 2 to injury and 1 to transfer.

Bringing in a freshman, in 2021, doesn't fill the gap left behind as they are not nearly as game ready as those would have been after 2-3 years in the system.

Getting a graduate transfer, or someone who has 2-3 years under his belt, even if from another program is lights years ahead of a true freshman and could have provided a starter at center, or, at least, quality depth at the offensive line this year.

The complaints are incompetent and immaterial because the accusers are unwilling to recognize the situation. You can learn all you need to know by watching Perry Mason every morning.

We signed 19. Allowed to sign 25. We also lost several to transfer. And we gave multiple walk ons a scholarship. We could have signed everyone in the last class and still taken transfers if we wanted to.

So your saying Clemson had 6 scholarships they could have used but just decided “ Na we don’t need them” ?

Oct 13, 2021, 3:29 PM [ in reply to Re: We signed a full class this last signing period, correct? ]

Does the transfer guy have to be the same class as the guy that left?
Ie: you can’t senior leave and replace with a sophomore? This is a question.

Also no one has answered the original question of who would you leave out?

How did the super seniors effect the roster and recruiting?

The transfer guy isn't replacing anyone specifically, so no he doesn't have to be the same class.
We always, always have attrition and extra scholarships (typically given to walk-ons). Every guy that enters the portal to leave us is opening up a scholarship.
Super Seniors do not count against the 85 scholarship limit.

I am not so sure that you are correct . Perhaps you can find the rule book and share it with us.

What I posted is accurate. Bye now.

Well you can only have 85 scholarship players at a time. So the staff has to mange the roster predicting years in advance.
If you have 70 players on scholarship already that leaves you 15 for that year.
Plus good luck finding a transfer that is gonna be better than whomever Clemson already has on the team!

Clemson is a brand...

Oct 13, 2021, 4:07 PM [ in reply to Re: We signed a full class this last signing period, correct? ]

... and part of that brand is Family, and specifically to Dabo and our football programs, we have very healthy walk-on culture because we allow for last minute departures/retirements to turn into a reward for that kid who came to Clemson and busted butt with no guarantee - only a healthy competition. We get a lot of very talented and/or determined guys that turn down scholarships for the chance to maybe earn one as a walk-on. This aspect of our program yield results that are hard to measure. However, I take pride that our holder, long-snapper Jack Maddox, and guys like Darien Rencher, Luke Price, and Will Brown get scholarships. I understand that heavily-recruited scholarship guys can learn from the sacrifice that our walk-ons and scout players, the guys who may only get one semester on scholarship if any. It is an inspiring part of our program.

And if that doesn't sway you, how 'bout HUNTER RENFROW.

Stop staring at the bark on the tree, and come view the glorious forest that is Clemson Football. GO TIGERS!

Wait, you mean Hunter, I catch everything around me, Renfrow, I have gone pro and still do the same thing was a walk on? You mean that kind of guy.

It is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that we will ever again find similar value at any position from a walk-on-

Good question and its worth referencing again that...

Oct 13, 2021, 3:29 PM

schools can sign up to 25 guys this year AND take up to 7 transfers bc of Covid. Im guessing it still works into the overall scholarship count but not certain.

My position still remains the same...if there is a quality transfer available that fits your mold and fills a desperate need, then take him. Don't be so stubborn about it and make limited exceptions. But I dont think transfers would have changed anything this year unless it was a QB....thats why we have 2 losses.

Re: Good question and its worth referencing again that...

Oct 13, 2021, 4:03 PM

we entered the season ranked in the top 4. 6 straight conference championships and 6 straight playoff appearances.

We had a QB that was a 5-star player that threw for over 400 yards against another playoff team the prior season.

Back up QB was hurt in the spring game, but I'm pretty sure Dabo received pretty frequent updates on his progress and recovery. Any transfer QB was going to come in as a backup to a 2nd year player, and there was another 5-star QB coming in the next year.

OL recruiting over the past 2 years had probably been the best we have had in over a decade.

WR stable were probably the best looking (on paper) that we've had in a while.

Not sure what our desperate need would have been.

Re: Good question and its worth referencing again that...

Oct 13, 2021, 4:13 PM

This is my take as well. We didn't have a need to utilize transfers - our roster was solid all around. That said, where we continue to see deficiency and lack of progress (OL mainly), it would benefit us to bring in someone with experience. There were several 4-star OLs that transferred.

Re: Good question and its worth referencing again that...

Oct 13, 2021, 6:01 PM

Smart responses, Memphis Tiger and Clemson Blue Jay.

Portal OL players might have been worthwhile had we gotten them before the start of this season (when they could learn OUR plays and establish the required coordination / team work with OUR OL). But as it was, our OL had early issues with one stud freshman who had trouble learning the plays, and with another stud freshman (D.Pennington) tearing his ACL late in summer camp. Coaches missed when they thought they could quickly develop a starting C to take over for Cade Stewart ... we've witnessed the challenges as this year's C candidates have struggled to play up to previous year standards. Not to beat the C problem to death, but I'm betting that the quality of our OL play moving forward will be quite good (even without D.Pennington's presence as a fast-learning component of OL depth). SUMMARY: It is too late to get a Portal OL to make a difference for remainder of 2021 season, but in hindsight it would have been helpful.

However, WR (both starting quality and depth) is another story. But Coaches must have believed that they saw something in practices which clearly have not translated into "Best is the Standard" type play in the games. Whiffed as far as WR roster evaluations have gone for 2021.

With all the issues that T-Net Coaches have identified I would still take our current team and coaches over any other school's in the Country including Bama. Go Tigers.
