We need to BLOW avg to good teams OUT. Light up the scoreboard. Only way ESPN will bat an eye

Aug 1, 2015, 11:59 AM

Need a convincing argument just in case we do in up dropping one to an above avg team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We have class

Aug 1, 2015, 12:05 PM

We don't run it up just to prove a point. Our schedule is really solid. We play 3 very good teams and a handful of solid teams as well. We'll be fine. The first two and the last game will be the ones that hurt our SOS.

Don't give a quack what ESPN thinks, but what the playoff committe thinks is critical. Don't know how they view "running up the score", but doubt that they give it much weight.

Welp, close wins by FSU resulted in an undefeated defending national championship team being awarded a 3 seed.

Meanwhile, 1 loss oregon (who blew every team they could out/ ran the scoreboard up on, was gifted the 2 seed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Unfortunately, perception is reality. And these people don't have time to watch every game.

Aug 1, 2015, 12:15 PM

They check scoreboards, highlights, and media buzz for much of their info.

Needing 2nd half comebacks against bad teams and taking your foot off the gas up 2-3 TDS in the 4th quarter.

Re: Huge difference between

Aug 1, 2015, 12:18 PM

What happens IF #4 goes down? We put in Kelly, who's done nothing but hand the ball off all season out respect for other teams. Then we ask him to make big throws to win playoff games? Not gonna work, bud.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seemed to work for Ohio State last year

Aug 1, 2015, 12:20 PM

And we all saw what happened when we played Ohio State.

By the way... they got beat by VT (who plays in the ACC last I checked).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Seemed to work for Ohio State last year

Aug 1, 2015, 12:47 PM

What worked for OSU? Blowing teams like Wisconsin out? I distinctly renember Herbstreit saying hefore that game, they needed a convincing win to jump TCU.

But a win is win though, right? Why run up the score? What good does that do other than show lack of class?

Oh TCU's guilty, too. Up 75-27 late in the 4th, they're still throwing the ball around with their backup QB (prepping him to lead his team in a big game if need be).

Seemed to work for Oregon, OSU and ALMOST TCU.... of course, had OSU not blown Wisky out by such a large margin.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OSU up 45-0... was a WR throwback pass to the QB really necessary? Classy? It worked.***

Dabo uses that space for for building depth, and not for putting big numbers on a score board. I like the big numbers, but I love experienced depth a lot more!!!

Exactly what I want as well. Not suggesting we play all of our 1's all of every game, but do keep some in so we can give Kelly a more realistic look of how our system works, and time enough to make proper reads and the throws needed to provide him with the comfort needed to play in hig games, if that should for any reason become a need for us in the season..... Not Kelly, the world class hander-offer to RBs guy. That guy won't help us when the lights come on in a big game atmosphere.

playoff poll was revealed. It was obviously based on the media's polls which is greatly influenced by the ESPiN family. How in the world did you miss that last year?

Other evidence was the SEC getting invited to bowl games in which they didn't belong. Check out the finals scores of the SEC's bowl record last year.

I'm as obstinate as anyone and stick with my first conclusion with all the fervor I can muster but when something falls that hard to evidence even I can't argue or ignore.

One of the main reasons I'm confident in our defense ...

Aug 1, 2015, 12:24 PM

... this fall is that we played as many people as possible as much as possible.

The staff views it both as a reward for hard work and insurance that the next man up will be ready for the challenge.

If that means we win 32-17 rather than 42-10 in a lesser game, so be it. It also means that when our star linebacker is bounced on a bogus targeting call, his replacement in the bowl game is confident enough to take a turnover to the house.

Numbers against nobodies don't rock my world. Whipping the big boys does. And this is how you whip the big boys.

Exactly my point also!!! Playing as many as you can when you can makes for solid depth deep in rotation, and that is what championship teams are made of.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe, but that's not what we will do.

Aug 1, 2015, 12:27 PM

What we will do is turn our two deep loose during the first half then lay some experience out for the backups and inexperience during the second half.

That's how I'd play it anyway, but what do I know?

What we REALLY need is..

Aug 1, 2015, 12:47 PM

to win more of the big regular season games, period. We beat UGA year before last; other than that, ?? QB injuries had a lot to do with it down the stretch, but earlier in the season we just blew it when we were pretty much equally matched against overrated UGA and FSU teams. Until Dabo overcomes those things, we'll keep hearing the term "Clemsoning".

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What we REALLY need is..

Aug 1, 2015, 12:53 PM

K, bud. Oveerated UGA and FSU teams? Both finished top 10. And neither had to face the wrath of #4 for an entire game. Any of our 85 scholarship guys make the kick from 3 yards out, not named Lakip that night. Any of our 85 man roster makes the throw to Legget for 6, not named stoudt that night. Any of our guys not named Norton don't cause a 25 yard loss from the half yd line that night.

We put ourselves in a position to win that one by 3 scores, which is all you can ask for out of your coaching staff. Players need to make plays. Deshaun, for instance, is a PLAYER.

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh. good old flyingglasshalfemptytiger. guess you missed the one where we have beaten 27 unranked teams in a row. that term should maybe changed to cooting. they are the ones losing to teams they have no business losing to.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, I didn't miss that.

Aug 3, 2015, 4:47 PM

As I've said before, we have certainly improved greatly over the Tommy Bowden program. We've made great strides in recruiting AND coaching since then, and it has resulted in greater consistency against the average fare of the ACC. I'm just saying that I would like to see us take the next step and start winning more big regular-season games. Since the WVU debacle, Dabo has gotten the message about bowl game prep, and I love that. Danny Ford always had his teams ready for the bowl game, and that's important... even if it's not a BCS bowl or whatever.

If you don't agree that we REALLY blew it in that FSU game last year and the year before, as well as several of the losses the coots in recent years, then I don't know what to say to you. It's clear to me that we seem to have had a problem preparing for these games. We've had talent comparable to ALL these teams... FSU, UGA, all of 'em. That isn't the issue.

Dabo has a job to do. Get us into the playoffs. Herbstreit said himself convincing wins matter.

Aug 1, 2015, 2:51 PM

Just as every player has to do their jobs by going out and dominating every play with a sense of desperation, dabo also has a job to do: whatever the heck it takes to lock up a playoff seed.

TCU and Oregon's blowout wins, whether you want to believe it or not, resonates in the minds of the commitee members and pundits across the country. OSU, too.

Hence, the 1 loss for each but clear top 5 teams.

We have this mindset that every game we play is gonna be a tough one. And ____ team is really good and dangerous, and it'll be a close one but whoever executes the best will win.

When our players and coaches think that way, that's the result you're gonna get.

I say screw that. We need a mindset of let's go out and dominate the field AND the scoreboard for 4 quarters and play our game regardless of the score. Whatever the scoreboard reads at the end, so be it. Worked too hard for too long to rob the players of getting to play the uptempo system they signed up to play in, come the 2nd half of any game.

Not just that, but they may also end up being robbed of a playoff spot bc we let off the gas with "class."

Anybody give a #### right now that urban meyer ran a trick play in the 4th Q vs Wisky (Wr > QB passback)? No. They think only of the fact that he won a national championship and is now looking to defend his crown.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dabo has a job to do. Get us into the playoffs. Herbstreit said himself convincing wins matter.

Aug 2, 2015, 9:56 AM

Herbstreit is part of the ESECPN sports media program. Yes Herbstreit will throw a nice word at us when we are doing well, and he is ready to bury his ESECPN knife in us when we're not. IMO he is no different than the rest of the ESECPN grew. They try and be on their best non bias behavior when the circumstances demand them to be....

I can't remember, did the extremely busy members of the playoff turn to Youtube for information about college football games that they had no way of watching in full?

Maybe they put their trust in Bleacher Report articles? I have no idea where they get their info from, all i know is they have about 25% of the time necessary to thoroughly evaluate each team, the injuries they've suffered, and each game played theoughout the course of the season.

I just don't know what other sporting network they'd choose for such info. Probz tnet message boards if you're looking for my humbled opinion.

Re: We need to BLOW avg to good teams OUT. Light up the scoreboard. Only way ESPN will bat an eye

Aug 1, 2015, 9:21 PM

All we need to do is win. Ohio State lost to a Virginia Tech team early and they are the defending National Champions. Also, if I am not mistaken, ESPN had Baylor and Ohio State as the last two out of the playoffs AND had an undefeated Florida State at number 4 in their playoff scenario. I don't put too much stock in the ESPN analysis when they said that team in Columbia was the 9th best team in the country heading into 2014 and they couldn't tell anyone why other than they play in the same conference division as Georgia and Missouri.

This. I just don't want an entire 2nd team substitution. Kelly will be running for his life. I'd rather see him get a more realistic feel for the pocket, stepping up, making throws, building confidence, etc...

Must run offense though. Uptempo (live action is the best way to learn how to move our guys down the field quickly).

Can promise you guys that our margin of victory will be a factor when it comes selection time at year's end.

Play subs, but mix them with the 1's so they so a "realistic" feel for the actual dynaics of our D. Make mass 2nd/3rd team substitutions once we're up 40 pts.

Coaches might run conservative plays but they have to throw some of the good stuff in there to get the young ones use to it.

I'm in the camp with the Rev on this one.

What I really want to see this year is for Kelly to get a lot of reps early. He makes me nervous. I know everyone is very high on him, but I've only seen him in the Shrine Bowl game, and I thought he looked lost. Plus, I hate the way he grips the ball for passing. JMO - but I hope he never plays in the rain.

He reminded me of Barry Richardson that was going to be our Center, and he was the worst Center I ever witnessed in the Shrine Bowl. Thankfully, I think he moved to a different position.

Anyway - Kelly needs to get a chance in real games to see if he is our next man up at QB. Otherwise, we might be in serious trouble if DW gets injured again.
