Recruiting, Recruiting, Recruiting.

Dec 31, 2021, 9:17 PM

GA and Bama have been the top Recruiting teams the last 3-4 years.
Yes you can win without top classes but it's the exception. Yes GA has not been as good on the field as they have in the Recruiting rankings. But here they are.
Clemson Recruiting is a concern. Hopefully they can grab a few players in February and use the portal.

Real question: With the TP does it really matter what type of recruiting class you have? If "every single one" of the kids you got in a class don't stay; where are you really? Perhaps 3 players separated you from 2nd to 7th. I mean, if that much stock is being put into it.

With the TP; it's truly not about where you start now; it's where you finish and where you contribute the most.

Dabo will eventually use the portal and I have no doubt it will be a good situation for the player and Clemson!

ON another note: I was going through 247 top recruits. I didn't bother with 4 & 5-star players - I wanted to see where the 3 stars were landing. Man, I was surprised at the talent being deemed 3-star for one after checking out some of these kids' measurables and video. 2. Some of these kids were from close enough that Clemson would be a desirable destination and in some cases the biggest school to offer! The roster management is being held close to the vest right now - we just have to trust Dabo and Co.

But, there are still a few kids who have good measurables and are good players who may not want and go be a part of a star-studded Texas A&M or a loaded Bama or Georgia roster! With some of the scholarships being eaten up by transfers; one would think there are some openings to improve our roster still before next season. Or at least our competitive depth.

Check out the below. Really gets interesting when you get into the 3-star players. Keeping in mind 3-star players make up the majority of CFB. Many of whom blossom like they are 5-star players. Sometimes a good WR was just at a school that ran the ball all the time and the kid was behind. Many examples of kids playing out of position and maybe being a 3-star because of it because that's where their H.S. needed them. But, put them in a position to thrive and BAM! Isiah Simmons comes to mind - 3-Star prospect. Skalski was a 3-star prospect.

Ole Ben B was an all-around better player in my opinion and got closer, I think, than Jamie will to playing in the NFL.

Re: I wish we’d take more numbers

Jan 1, 2022, 8:14 PM

I agree. Dabo is stuck on 15 for o line scholarships. That might be alright if everyone was game ready. When a quarter of them are still in the developmental stages, a couple are busts, and a couple get injured, we end up in the position that we were in this year. There will be years that we stay healthy and are alright, but we will have more years like this as well along the way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s been a habitual problem.

Jan 1, 2022, 8:20 PM

We need to give all the coaches sons scholarships to OL

Give all the travel squad the same benefits as the scholarship players. This has been a RIDICULOUS excuse to waste scholarships…

Re: It’s been a habitual problem.

Jan 1, 2022, 9:08 PM

I have never understood why they were on scholarship and that would be true if they were the only 4 finalists for the Heisman. I would have been happier even if they went to walk ons which we give too many scholarships to as well. Before anybody tells me Hunter Renfrow says hello, I am not saying that walk ons don't earn scholarships. We gave 7 to walkons at the beginning of the year last year. I believe that Will Brown was the only one to see any relevant playing time.

The better players don't typically transfer. Very few starters in the portal.

That’s pure speculation and your opinion.

Jan 1, 2022, 8:33 PM

Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, they all have transfer players that are starters and contributing heavily.

LSU won the national championship with a ton of players from the portal.

Only offering a handful of kids the way we do.

We had a bad year. Desperately need WR, TE, OL. I’m not seeing a sense of urgency.

Is it that difficult to find guys with decent character? Contrary to popular belief, our players aren’t all choir boys.

Re: We look like we have some kind of huge ego

Jan 1, 2022, 8:02 PM

Tiger Dominance - I do not disagree! I just trust what Dabo has going on.

But, I concede to also being a bit "concerned"! I would be lying if I said I wasn't. But, again, he knows more than me and has a much better bead on his team.

With that said, "when you make recruiting misses, it really stands out with the smaller classes"! Dabo has said, "winning a national championship is now how I judge a team"! I believe him when he says that, "but as fans who have gotten spoiled and fans who see a Georgia in the finals a team had we even had Kelly Bryant we beat"! He would have run that one he DJU threw the INT on, LOL!

I don't look at Bama, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Cincinnati as unbeatable at all! I think our 15, 16, 17(yes, 17 too) and most certainly 18 teams would smoke all of these teams. 19 perhaps as well! LSU was just a buzzsaw and we were in the way.

You can't miss if you don't offer a lot. Same way on certain jobs out there - they are super picky - but they usually pick right. I think Dabo picks right - but with NIL ability and the instant TRANSFER - I concede it must be re-thought some. I think he has said he would use the portal several times - so we'll see!

Jan 1, 2022, 7:33 PM

The Utes may not go on to win this game; but they most certainly are not a top 10 recruiting team. I don't even believe they are top 20 TBH.

35 first half points and a 14 point lead over a team that's probably a composite 4.5 star!

Clemson is going to have more 4 & 5 star types - and hopefully some under-valued other players who grind and get coached to play good technique.

As you said, when we first started climbing this thing, that's how it was! No reason to think it can't be done again!

Besides that, "how will the mentality and continuity of those teams chock-a-block full of NIL money and transfer portal players? We don't really know - because it's not reached where it's looking like it's going(out of control) yet! If it isn't already!

It does change everything and I like your let the dust settle and see how it plays out comment. For "little ole Clemson" that might be what we have to do.

The other teams can still only put out 11 players at a time.
The other teams can still only have 85 scholarship players.

There are thousands of kids who "want it"(NIL and treated like a king as a transfer) but are there enough landing spots? What of the high school kids coming in? Kill their scholarship chances on somebody else's "either problem child or disgruntled for whatever reason or whatever else legit reason"? Because it's that other school today; could be you tomorrow - and you would have missed out on an opportunity to grab a player who could have contributed.

That's the dilemma people aren't going into depth on as it relates to the portal i.m.o. It's more complicated than: "going and signing everybody"!
If you go get a few positions I saw on another thread; the kids at that position will likely enter the portal themselves! Then; you have another "new" problem.

I just don't know how loyal these kids are going to be moving forward! Will they grind and stay? Or will they exit and go where a promise of NIL money and starting time is said to be available? Mind you on a side note there are no contracts. If they leave and that promise maker doesn't deliver, "that kid loses"!
Recruiting will be important but my question is can you trust that just because you missed out on a kid that really liked you(Clemson) but choo$e $$$$ to go elsewhere for $$$ other reason$ - that one day you won't "ever have them"! Do you fillup the roster thus limiting your ability to take a portal player? Or do you "not renew" a scholarship and tell a kid they aren't good enough to be renewed; we are bringing in someone else. We don't do that at Clemson or rather Dabo doesn't do that. Other coaches do. Do you stoop to that level; or stick to what you believe in?

Many on this board are clueless about how things have changed in the last several years. NIL and the portal are bad for CFB in my opinion. But it's part of the game now. I think Dabo will adjust. Don't look at what Clemson has done in the past and assume it will work in the future. Nothing is the same anymore. It is very difficult to bring in a player and develop him because of impatience. I believe in Dabo and I know he will keep this program on top.

Once more, for everyone in the cheap seats. We had an already small class lined up not because we forgot to or how to recruit but because we had the most underclassmen on our roster since at least 2015 (didn’t look back further). That already small, but appropriately sized class, got hit by transfers due to the coaching turnover. So it seems more dramatic than it really is. Our coaches are well aware of any issues that will ever be brought to light on this board and many more. Next year will be a much larger class. The “portal” is a red herring and is flooded with players due to covid eligibility rules. This will be self correcting as players with extra eligibility phase out. NIL is a whole other ball of wax and no one has any idea how it is going to shake out. I’m confident Dabo will adjust accordingly and if/when necessary he will solicit whatever tools he needs.

We need more croots. It’s pretty simple.

We aren’t gonna have a bunch of 5 star heart 5th year seniors anymore. We will have a few… adapt or die.

Re: Recruiting, Recruiting, Recruiting.

Jan 1, 2022, 8:55 PM [ in reply to Re: Recruiting, Recruiting, Recruiting. ]

I heard a lot of numbers on the class size, but for the most part around 20 looked to be it earlier in the season. We were limping to the finish line with 15 before the shake up. Bates is probably our best recruiter, but I think that he has had some growing pains in his first year as the recruiting coordinator.

It is an inexact science to judging the interest of recruits to gauge whether other offers need to be made. Bates will develop better judgement with experience and the help of Streeter and Dabo. Regardless of what you think of Streeter as an OC or QB coach, he did a heck of a job as our recruiting coordinator.

We had a subpar year on the field and the recruiting trail, but neither was to the point that we can't recover and return to the stature of the last several years. I'll be more concerned going into next year than I have been in a while, but I'll still have my eyes on the playoff until as long as there is hope.
