JUST WATCHED OKLAHOMA'S LAST 2 GAMES...

Dec 15, 2015, 2:53 PM

They won, but I am not impressed. I try to be reasonable and objective, but...

WHEN OKLAHOMA HAS THE BALL
Yes, Mayfield scrambles pretty well, you have to when your tackles can't block. I still expect 3 to 5 QB sacks by Clemson as well as a couple of busted plays/runs by Mayfield.

Their center and guards block well, their tackles, not so much. I really expect us to abuse their tackles during the game, 5 to 8 tackles for loss, plus the sacks. Their best running plays are up the middle or busting off the left corner after trying to go through the middle or a called sweep around the left side.

Their corners and safeties are easily beat. Both TCU and Oklahoma State had wide open receivers on the safeties, but they had to wait on the passes from the backup quarterbacks. The corners bite pretty easily on the bubble screens, so I'm sure we'll have something for that if they stop our short passes.

In their last 6 games, Oklahoma's offense has played against defenses that had an average ranking of 97. That's a lot different than playing the #7 defense in the nation, so I expect Clemson's defense to give them the same welcoming they gave them last year on December 31st.

WHEN CLEMSON HAS THE BALL
Running the ball may be more difficult for us than passing, but can be done. I would expect 200+ yards between Gallman and Watson rushing.

I don't think they can stop the pass. I think if we're playing our regular game and our receivers catch the ball when it's thrown to them, Watson should be able to pick them apart easily. Looking for 350 to 400 yards passing. We should be able to beat them long all game unless they put two safeties back. If they do that, Watson will pick them apart on the 5 yo 15 yard passes. You can't cover them all, their all great!

SCORE:
CLEMSON - 45
OKLAHOMA - 17

So let me get this straight, Syracuse, NCState, USC and UNC and the best offense in football BC scored 17 points on Clemson and OU's offense all of sudden isn't better than those? In your analysis did you figure out why UNC and NC State scored their TDs in less than 2 minutes on your defense?

Re: JUST WATCHED OKLAHOMA'S LAST 2 GAMES...

Dec 15, 2015, 4:34 PM

I think the point is that we have no idea... Oklahoma hasn't played a defense with a pulse. Mayfield is good, but is OU's offense that much better than NCSU or UNC? That's why they play the game....

Williams is a bit of a mercurial talent. At his best he might be as good as Mayfield. Better runner. Not as talented of a passer. UNC has a better OL and we got in his head from the first time he dropped back.

Nothing at all. I find your posts and perspective very interesting.

Oklahoma's a great team, there is no question about it. But playing us is going to be a real test.

The defenses you've played average somewhere around 90th and the 3 big conference games you won came against good teams with dynamic quarterback who happened to be out. That's not to say you wouldn't have beat them, but it's fair to say it bumped your overall defensive ranking.

Having said all of that Oklahoma is among the most storied programs in the country and they don't call Stoops "Big Game Bob" for nothing. So, we will see what happens.

It's not going to be a walk, but I'm pretty confident that we'll win it. ;)

Go Tigers!

No you weren't...he told you how he formed his opinion...by watching the games. If you disagree, instead of being a snarky d-bag, why don't you respond with your arguments and have a debate.

Last time I responded to you, as you were asking for facts, I posted a lot of them and you went away...

You want to bring up UNC...great--that is a game that had all of our attention and we held them to 103 yards in the first half; they had one good drive in the second and we were up 19 with a few minutes left and had dominated...INT and a quick change/short field changed momentum a bit, but we were still up 15 w/ a minute left.

You want to talk about points, but UNC gained 100 yards less than their average per game.

NC St was after a huge win that clinched the division and on the road; they play one great home game a year and that was it...again entered the 4th quarter up 20.

BC scored 10 points in the actual game and the one TD was a 20 yard drive...by including that using purely the score you showed your ignorance. At least the OP actually watched the entire games and formed an opinion...you've looked at the box score and stirred the pot.

SC scored 15 in garbage time including one with 0:01 on the clock...

Cuse...we played our worst game of the year--at least our worse game didn't end up in an embarrassing loss to a terrible team (see Shootout, Red River).

If you want to take solace in the fact that if OU is down by 3 TDs entering the 4th you have a chance to only lose by a TD, you do that...we can add you to our moral losses on the season.

Dec 15, 2015, 7:31 PM

I really have to laugh at how Clemson has been disrespected all the way to #1. OU sucked last year, they were coming into the Clemson game as 4 loss team having brain farted away a game against a rival at home, living through the disappoint that TK9 was a one hit wonder and the defense, while good individually played like crap as a unit. Agreed Clemson is better offensively this year, I don't think your front 7 is as good defensively as last year, but what you under estimate is how much better OU is from that suckage of a team last year.

I don't set the lines, but if you have any understanding of Vegas it was pretty obvious the knew how to move the money by setting that line. BTW I said OU sucked last year, yes I guess sucking makes it a down year, but I never used injured as an excuse. Teams have play 12 games a year, players are going to get hurt, that is football and should never be used as a reason for losing.

We beat everyone that took the field against us! We are #1 because we brought it every week! And played a championship game! And all we hear is how bad a up start , one loss team that we embarrassed last year will beat us! Just like last year! We have been taking everyone's best shot all year and we don't care! Everyone had revenge on their mind and it didn't matter! WE WIN!! ITS THAT SIMPLE!!

Is it wrong to kinda hope Vulnerables shuts out FUJH? If for no other reason than to force Stoops to can doughboy.
I was trying to muster some optimism for this game but I don't think we win. I cant see us scoring much. D holds up for a half then it quits like it did most of the year.
We've been overrated all season, why change now?
Does Clemson's QB have an arm? And I don't mean a QB kinda arm....I mean he's not an amputee. If so, he will break school records against us...
TK wants to get the pick six over with early....

Yes that sounds a very confident fan base going into the game.

Watson is good qb but he isn't the best qb in the nation. He doesn't lead in any qb stat but rushing yards. Last time I check a qb was suppose to pass... He's an average thrower. Avg pass efficiency avg td/int ratio avg passing yards.
He's the qb of number one team that is all.
Last time I checked, Football is a team sport and he isn't even the best player on your team.

Re: We heard how awesome OU was last year!

Dec 15, 2015, 10:42 PM

Johnny Manziel ranked 16th in 2012 in NCAA passer efficiency with a value of 155.3. When Manziel won the 2012 Heisman Trophy as the best college football player, no one cited his passer efficiency to support it. Manziel's value came from more than his ability to throw the ball, which is what passer efficiency attempts to capture. What about the total QBR?

In total QBR, Deshaun Watson is ranked #3, Baker Mayfield is #8.

He was the only quarterback invited as a Heisman finalist in 2015 and is already ranked #1 to win it in 2016.

Your liberal use of the word "average" is comical.

One doesn't get labeled as "championship pedigree" repeatedly throughout the year and shine when listed side-by-side next to last year's first quarterback taken in the NFL draft by being "average".

"Average" quarterbacks don't lead a team that loses 10 starters on defense and boasts 40 freshman to the undisputed #1 ranking and top seed in the college football playoffs.

And the crazy thing? This year was supposed to be a rebuild year. If you told me at the beginning of the year, after losing 10 starters on defense, that we would be ranked #7 in total defense, I probably would have laughed, honestly. Calling Watson average is so fn delusional, even on land thieves that would be retarded. But to come here and post something so ridiculous? You won't get any intelligent argument out of anyone saying dumb $hi+ like that.

"But I fully expect a win tomorrow night, still won't satisfy many around the fanbase but we gonna win this motherf***&"
"Sooners roll! I know it! "
"If Sugar Bowl Knight shows up its gonna be a long day for Vurnerables"
"Trevor about to get on the 2015 heismam radar "

I get several fans were down because of the last game...but I hate to break it to you, not all were...and it didn't look like the team was pre-game:
http://www.tigernet.com/story/football/Shutdown-corner-Alexander-backs-pregame-talk-dominates-13403

It's cool you think your program has improved majorly...it's idiotic to see Clemson at #1 and the only undefeated team after playing 8 top 40 defenses and think they haven't too. I promise, there's a huge difference between Stoudt and Watson..your team might be able to now play better against Stoudt, but Watson being in changes as much in Clemson's O as OU having Mayfield.

Defense point

Dec 15, 2015, 8:40 PM [ in reply to Re: We heard how awesome OU was last year! ]

I read somewhere that last year's defense had, per individual, a lot less snaps. We rotated more. This year our guys had to play more snaps, and more consecutive games without a break.
If we were able to rotate more, and they had that week off mid-season, it can be assumed that that or defensive stats would have been better.
So the point is, this defense is closer to last year's than on paper if you account for that. I feel sorry for Oklahoma when they face them after a nice rest.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

While we are pointing...

What exactly happened here?
http://espn.go.com/college-football/game?gameId=400763434

One word: unranked.

You can show efficiency stats all you want, but only one stat matters at the end of 60 minutes.
24-17
The major star Baker Mayfield has over DW4 this year is a 1 in the L column.

Jacobs Brissett may not be on that list, but he is a beast with the football. He is great training for a quarterback who can beat a team in multiple ways.

We all know this will be an entertaining game.

Oklahoma
Top 50 (3):

Top 51-100 (5):

Bottom 100-127 (4):

Top 51-100 (5):

Those are fair questions, to which we adopt the SEC response strategy:

If we win big, we're King Kong dominant.

If we win small...we didn't really want to be there.

The reasons Clemson will win by a large margin again (45-17)?
Because CLEMSON is better.
Because we have rested.
Because we studied film.
Because Watson didn't win the Heisman and the whole team is pissed.
But mostly, because Dabo and Brent are pissed that with all Clemson has done; being the ONLY undefeated team in the nation; the ONLY team to have beaten 3 top ten teams; the ONLY team to have been ranked #1 by the committee; and being the only #1 team and having to listen to how Alabama should be #1 all year. And now, now to have to listen to the "experts" tell us that a team that was going to run all over us last year, but failed to score a touchdown, is amazingly going to beat us this year.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but:
Six games ago, Oklahoma played the 127th defense in the nation.
Five games ago, Oklahoma played the 126th defense in the nation.
Four games ago, Oklahoma played the 104th defense in the nation.
I'm not impressed with these wins!

Then, the last three games, Oklahoma played teams without their starting quarterbacks on the field. Some were 2nd string and some 3rd string quarterbacks. Mighty impressive wins there too (ha). Might have something to do with the turnover margin so high in your favor.

Is Oklahoma any different this year? You tell me! Last year they were rested. Last year they studied film. How did that work for them. This year, Samaje Perine is not the only back in their backfield. Now they have two backs that will run all over us. I think not, they'll just divide the negative yards between them. Their quarterback is a great scrambler. What??? Against defenses that are ranked 125th in the nation. The only scrambling he'll be doing is back to the bench and hoping he doesn't have to get back on the field again anytime soon.

The only reason I gave you 17 points is that when the third string gets in, you'll maybe score a touchdown or a field goal.

Merry Christmas and a HAPPY "CLEMSON" NEW YEAR.

Not so fast my friend....

If UNC's QB had thrown a couple more passes on target we might not even be in this game.

Don't get me wrong, I think we win but a 4th quarter maybe last 2 min or so game.

I can't believe I just read through 5 pages of the same Sooner rhetoric without a single mention of the "air raid offense" or "plays per game".

Where are the other two trolls that you stormed the beach with last night CUDad? This isn't even fair, no?

Yeah I guess you guys have a pretty bad taste in your mouth about Air Raid offenses after Holgo and WVU torched Clemson for 70 the last time you played in the Orange Bowl.

That wasn't the last time we played in the orange bowl. Please educate yourself.

That was 4 years and a completely different coaching staff

Ago. It was also not the last time we played in the Orange Bowl. We played in it 2 years ago and demolished Ohio State, but not as bad as the whole staff and most of the returning players who absolutely ravaged your team last year.

Um, last time we played in the Orange Bowl was 2 years ago...get educated. Clemson defeated Ohio State, the year before they became the National Champions.

oh, and btw, Kevin Steele was the DC in the WV game, just a point....Clemson hasn't lost a bowl game since Venables became the DC. Hasn't lost a game since Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott became the co-offensive coordinators (which first game was the OU bowl game), as a side note.

I won't reiterate what the last few guys just said as you're clearly disillusioned about when the last time we played in the orange bowl was and how we performed.

What I don't understand is your guys' insistence that the air raid offense is something magical, as if it cannot be defended. The air raid offense does have cons you know, particularly when you're playing a great passing defense. Now I know you're not accustomed to playing one of those but we are ranked #5 in passing yards allowed and #7 in total defense. Why can't you digest those numbers are factual and relevant?

The air raid is an awfully-one-sided offense. And if it isn't clicking, your defense gets zero rest which will result in an onslaught by Deshaun and company. You must know that! Sure, it's a fan-favorite when it's working, but it can also result in an offensive line slacking because pass blocking is much easier than run blocking. If your line gives and inch, we will crush them, literally. I hope your guys throw in some contingency planning to enable them short gains when necessary, as well as clock management and sustained drives if you want to remain relevant once you realize we aren't a team you just throw and throw and throw against. The air raid relies on consecutive completions to be successful, as well as receivers making things happen after the catch, I just don't see it happening. We have sure tacklers, hard hitters and great coverage guys in the secondary.

If your offensive line can't contain the pass rush, Mayfield will be throwing more prayers than accurate passes all afternoon. The air raid isn't new, you know that. It's been employed and tweaked for 20+ years now. Zone and cover 2 work great against it with safeties over the top in nickel and dime packages. Disguise blitzes, make it hard for the quarterback to read pre-snap, and you're in good shape. It's not like it's some space-age system that no one has tape on.

Further, though the air raid is highly effective, it requires a quick trigger pull from the QB in finding the right playmaker. Given Mayfield's 36 sacks and roll-out preference, he doesn't come off as a 2-second-release type of guy. Take away his muscle memory and disturb his ability / time to read what's going on and he can become ordinary very quickly.

Good grief. Some Sooner fans just don't get it. They think their team is worthy of #4 'cause they beat some lame teams missing their key players. Wow.

All you have to do is watch the Tennessee game and see how close they came to being discarded for the entire season. UT absolutely dominated them and then just laid down. I wouldn't want to even discuss that game if I was a Sooner fan.

-They still cannot tackle in space.
-Their QB holds the ball too long for our D.
-Their best RB - Perine - was absolutely shut down last year, and somehow they expect him to be a Heisman winner or something now against the best D they have faced all year.
-Their best plays are slants to the middle if the OU Oline can keep our D off of BM long enough.
-The can't seem to hardly ever connect over the top on the long ball. BM just can't make those throws.
-BM throws short stuff really well, but press coverage might prevent some of that.

No - I could go on and on, but the only real way that CLEMSON loses this game is TO's, and lots of them. OU will endure another long off-season. They need to prepare for that.
