We haven’t seen more Cade because the offensive scheme doesn’t align with his talents.

Nov 30, 2022, 3:20 PM

After enduring my mandatory 2-days of mental cooldown after the loss, I’ve been thinking about the last 2-yrs, our offensive system, and QB play.

The offense DJ inherited was the same core system we ran with Trevor, and as you’ll recall what made Trevor especially dangerous was his legs. In Trevor’s last year he ran 68-times, rushing 17% of the time. That was down considerably from the prior year where he ran 103-times.

This season DJ has already had 142 rushing attempts. That’s just shy of 30% of his attempts.

The offense also hasn’t materially changed in how the QB runs with most of them being off-tackle inviting contact as a byproduct of that scheme.

It’s clear the staff has tried to utilize DJ’s big frame and mold him into a running threat, and it’s undeniable that he’s showed significant improvement in that part of his game. DJ didn’t have that in his toolbox, but he DID have the body for it; a body that could endure abuse and deliver some occasionally.

In my view this simply doesn’t work with Cade-

The idea that we would OR SHOULD have him pound it for 150 designed rushing attempts per season is folly. That’s not his comparative advantage. He’s fast, has a quick release, can rollout(looking comfortable doing it)

Altogether, the reason we haven’t seen more of Cade is because the offensive system as it stands today is not a fit for exploiting his talents. It’s not feasible late in a season to change it.

For these reasons I expect dramatic changes to the offensive system this off-season, and I expect that QB competitions will take place under that new system.

In terms of the rest of this season, I think we’ll see Cade within designed packages for him.

Its actually the exact opposite.

Nov 30, 2022, 3:23 PM

The offense fits Cade. It doesn't DJ.

Cade is much faster and can hit the hole better than DJ. The RPO system that we run is made for a QB like Cade.

Got to agree. Cade is quicker and I think he can be more decisive whereas I think DJ would be better suited to a traditional pro drop back style.

It does fit Cade better. I discussed this today with someone else. If you think back to K Bryant, his passing wasn't great and he also struggled with his progression. However, when he put his foot in tbe ground he could move! DJ struggles with progression and is also not very fast. With Cade we could at least get some bigger chunk plays with his legs. The kid has a live arm and it'll come on if given the reps. It's time for his turn.

could be.. possibly ..outside the box thinking...

Nov 30, 2022, 3:26 PM

The reason why we haven't seen more Cade is that the coaches still think DJ gives Clemson the best chance to win.

That is what Dabo says.. but it seems to be the most outrageous possibility and the common one that many Tnetters refuse to believe.

so sure.. your reasoning is as good as any

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

We are a power spread scheme.

Cade is a dual threat QB

DJ is a pro-style qb

and you're trying to tell us that DJ fits our scheme and Cade doesn't?

I’m saying;

Trevor Lawrence: 6’6” 225lbs
DJU: 6’4” 250lbs
Cade Klubnik: 6’2” 195lbs

Beyond being a true freshman one of these players is not physically like the others, and the same molasses of a system as it is won’t work if he’s to be successful.

Deshaun Watson was the same height and size when he arrived at Clemson. Not sure what these metrics mean

If you think DJ was any kind of QB you are crazy...he could barely pass gas...coaches had to make up stories about who was at fault for DJs atrocious play...first the offensive line he consistently had 5 or 6 seconds...the year the WR`s were funkiest because they could not catch a 65mph poorly thrown pass...we had to bastardize our whole offensive scheme to find anything he could do well and consistently, when that failed it was Streeters fault! That is over with and move on with a real QB.He will get 1st team reps now and he will prosper!

Lmfao where did some of y’all learn football from?? Cade was molded just like Deshaun and Trevor was to run our offense. DJ was not he doesn’t fit an RPO system because it has to many moving parts. Cade would be putting a circle into a circle hole, DJ is like trying to ram a square through a circle hole. DJ needs to be in a tradition spread offense and he would probably thrive.

Nov 30, 2022, 3:40 PM

The only fit was DJ’s body size. The RPO is going to continue as a major part of our offense going forward, but I’ll wager if we have a different QB next year, he’s not going to rush 30% of the time. Add that to Cade’s other advantaged talents and I think we see a different looking offense.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cade is a great fit for our offensive scheme.

Nov 30, 2022, 3:33 PM

I thought we adapted our offense and play calling to get the most out of DJ given his shortcomings but just could not overcome the lack of efficiency on routine plays. Calling the game differently to take advantage of Cade's skills will be no problem whatsoever.

He only got 30% of the first team reps last week and none since fall camp...Dabo did not want Cade to succeed when DJ failed...if our D was not so good we might have lost 7 games with DJ...he was that bad! Then where would we be?

I've been a supporter of DJ his entire time here but the idea you've laid out here is wrong. DJ has underperformed because they didn't play to his strengths, this offense is much more Cade friendly than DJ friendly. DJ was never known to be a big runner, he has great size for it and is actually pretty shifty for how big he is but Cade is by far the better running option. Where DJ and Streeter never could hook up together was using the middle of the field. I said all along Cade is the future of this team and I stand by that but unlike some who post I do not feel DJ should shoulder the most (some, not most) blame. It was the coaches failure to put him in the best position to utilize his talent. Dabo has shown he doesn't feel Cade is ready, I nor anyone else here has the credentials to dispute his judgement. Dabo will play Cade when he feels Cade is ready. He did it with Deshaun, he did it with Trevor. What has changed? He's still the best coach in Clemson history. He'll get it fixed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

dju was a total whiff by our coaches

Nov 30, 2022, 6:17 PM

the buck stops there. Why else would the staff still promote and continue with dju? The ego would be very bruised. dju does not fit our offense scheme at all!!! This is why we will not see Cade anymore this season. Epic fail.......

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree entirely. Our offense is perfectly devised for his skill set, and all

Nov 30, 2022, 3:39 PM

we need is for him to do is mature and develop into it. He has the skills to command every facet of it, and like any offense there will be built-in features to highlight his skillset.

As you noted, our playbook has been scaled-down to meet DJs capabilities and stronger traits. We likely won't be running Cade in an off-tackle power game, but he'll be used on the perimeters to better utilize his quickness skillet. Like we've already seen.

Same offense, some different playcalls. I'm assuming Cade will ultimately be able to buy time when needed, better peruse his progression, not be afraid to hit tighter windows, and make sure he puts it where the receiver has a better chance to take command of the reception.
That's what we're lacking now. It's not the playcalls preventing that. The playcalling is designed to help DJ execute something, anything to move the ball.

Expect a much more dynamic offense once we've identified the player most capable of performing ALL aspects of it. The offensive design is fine.

I'm thinking the 2nd half of the Syracuse game showed the capabilities of Cade in this offense and it wasn't too shabby.

If you were a rock you couldn't be more clueless. The one that doesn't fit the offense is DJ, not Cade. Cade is perfect for this offense and he's now finally ready to run it.

Do you even follow the game? Or is this more sarcasm? Klubnik is the perfect QB for this type of offense and DJ is a drop back passer trying to run when he's as nifty as Tom Brady.

Re: We haven’t seen more Cade because the offensive scheme doesn’t align with his talents.

I usually try to go to work proving my point rather than open with an insult.

My post is right on point. This staff tried to make DJ something he wasn’t utilizing a big frame that could take more abuse. I believe they did that to offset his deficiencies as a passer.

As I’ve pointed out he had 145 rushing attempts this year. 145! That’s not our offense. It’s what our offense turned into to support THAT QB. There’s no way Cade will have that many rushing attempts in 2023. His comparative advantages versus DJ have already opened this offense back up and the playbook along with it.

We’ve already seen the proof in the pudding in the ACC Championship. We’ll see more of it as he settles in as the starter and our coordinators hit the reset button on what the offense can and can’t do.

DJ took so much abuse because he was like a plowhorse running the ball. Big and slow. No reason to think Cade couldn't handle it at 200 lbs, especially since he appears fast and shifty enough to avoid big hits.
