We desperately need competition at the Center position

Sep 12, 2022, 7:54 AM

I watched the OL very closely vs Furman. The weakest link on the OL by far is Putnam. He is the biggest reason for a lack of push and running room. He was beaten several times by Furman's DT/NG. A lot were total whiffs. If you're getting worked by Furman's DL, what are you going to do vs top notch Power 5 DTs? He's okay as a pass blocker and his snapping isn't bad, but he has an obvious lack of strength and seems incapable of getting the push we need to consistently have a running game this year.

So what is your solution. We recruited a 5* star C two years ago and he has yet to see the field.

Please tell us your solution for this year.

It's definitely a issue. I'm sure the coaches are trying to figure it out. More than likely it is what it is.

Not to make an excuse here, but at Center, we are where we are.

Our expectations should be tempered as far as Center play; therefore I am pleased that a guy who never played the position has done well in the snap quality and pass pro aspect of the position. W.Putnam is far more athletic than what we saw from M.Bockhorst (M.B. was a good Guard). Putnam has shown that he can get to the D.Tackle and be in position to off DTackle; he struggles to hold his position once he's gotten to the place that we wants to be in.

Let's face it, we don't have any better / ready to play big minutes options at Center other than W.Putnam.

I like W.Putnam, but wish like mad that we had a ready-to-play RG so that we could have kept W.Parks at RT.

Breaking in 3 different OL players to play new positions from Center to RG to RT is a recipe for overall mediocrity on the OL, and that's where we are right now.
