We can have a healthy program and suffer one mediocre season

Oct 5, 2021, 10:10 AM

Don't be spoiled and let a tantrum cause permanent damage. Be adult enough to accept missing the playoffs one year out of 6 is not the end of the world. Our recent, historically unusual success has earned our patience.

Clemson family isn't some recruiting slogan stolen from another program. We are not Auburn or Tennessee. It's an organic thing that was built BEFORE the elite run. If you only love Clemson when it is elite.... then you are not part of what made Clemson special LONG before 2015.

Most of you don't need to hear any of this.... but for the spoiled brats who are throwing a fit and attacking our program... sit down, be patient and don't screw this up for the rest of us.

Rant over.

+1

Only my son and daughter have the excuse to be completely heartbroken this season. Born 2015 and later, they only know our tigers to be "unbeatable". We still are - teaching them about effort and working hard as success isn't a given, it is earned with hustle, talent, and faith. The mascots have to work harder now.

I don't think people would be upset at a mediocre season, if they felt that EVERYTHING is being worked. Some do not feel that way. I for one, wouldn't mind TP getting a chance. What could it hurt, other than someone's feelings?

To name a few things it could hurt:

#1 and most important it could hurt TP as I suspect he is not 100% recovered from his injury/surgery in the spring.

#2 it could hurt the team as TP has been somewhat turnover prone in previous seasons (and in the spring game I believe). Putting in TP for one series and having a turnover to give the opponent a short field or worse a score might be the difference in winning and losing a game.

#3 it could hurt the progress being made on Clemson's offense. It's not fast progress or improving by leaps and bounds but Clemson has gotten better each game on offense because they players are learning each other and playing more as a unit. One series likely wouldn't change this, but switching back and forth or changing the signal caller for a few series can throw off or reset the progress made with DJ.

I can see both arguments. Sometimes it's just about confidence and swag and we don't want to crush the momentum that can be building for this young man (which is the card I think Dabo is playing). On the other hand, let's looks at RB's. Would Mafah have even been given the opportunity for game time playing time if it weren't for an injury and a transfer? Who knows what TP would look like in a game environment - could be bad, could be great - we likely will not know unless things get really bad.

I just don't think that in today's college football environment any team can afford to take a year off or have a less than mediocre season after being one of the 3 best teams in the nation for several years. The biggest thing it affects is recruiting. Top recruits won't generally commit to a program that is having a season like we are on offense. Then it's a snowball effect. So it's not a matter of not making the playoffs. Not making the playoffs to me is getting excluded from the 4 because of 1 loss. This is much, much worse than that. And then we don't have anyone on the staff that has a clue why this is happening. Recruits aren't going to come to a program with those kinds of issues. I think unless the staff can get this turned around this season we are in trouble. We shall see.

This is not consistent with reality.

Name 4 teams over the last 6 years that have not had a mediocre season.

Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma.... who else? That's 3 teams out of like 130. And we have a better resume than 2 of the 3 over the last 6 years. We are 5-3 AGAINST those 3 teams over the last 6 years.

UGA went 8-5 in 2015 8-2 last year. No Nattys in 40 years. You want to trade our last 6 years for theirs?
Penn State went 4-5 last year 9-4 in 2018 and 7-6 in 2015
Iowa? Michigan? Florida? plenty of mediocrity.

Want to trade places with one of these guys? UGA? What were you posting about UGA before our game with them? You have Kirby Smart PJ's on because of how their program was so much better? Doubt it.

Even with the worst offense Clemson had in over a decade... we only lost to the 2nd best team (or maybe the best) in the country by 7.

Yes our offense sucks.... horrible. But there is no reason for you to start trying to throw anything overboard.

The players that built our dynasty were recruited before the dynasty.

Just try to relax.

It's good to see a calm, educated response to what has been a frustrating season so far. The trust that has been given to Dabo and staff when times are good, should be the same during challenging times. It's a down year during a run that ain't over. It isn't like The University of ##### Columbia who consistently have down years, with a 7-8 win thrown in just for fun. Look at the over all program, where it was, and where it is now. I'd say we're in pretty good shape.

Sure we can express our disappointment and suggest things, but in my opinion we should be respectful of the players and coaches. This is school after all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. It's fun to analyze and suggest what may be done

better. Football message boards are awesome because it gives people who invest way too much of their energy into sports (like me) somewhere to test their half-cocked theories. (Like I do)

The problem is when you get angry/frustrated people trying to process their emotions by hurling abuse at coaches and players or making sweeping assertions with no way of checking their validity.

I still have expectations of an Orange Bowl appearance and hope for a victory. If that is mediocre, so be it.
