I did not say forget the past, just leave it there. It is history and will always be remembered as such, but we cannot move forward if we don't realize that and quit bringing it all back up!

With regard to the flag people are not bringing up what it stood for because they are ASSUMING without knowing. Do you know what the average soldier in the South who died in the war was fighting for? It wasn't for slavery anymore than the average Northern soldier. Slaves were notfreed until two years into the war and the average Northerner or Southener didn't own slaves. And, the slaves in the North were not initially freed by Lincoln when they were freed in the South. The point is many people are distorting the truth and the want to claim the flag stands for hate are the very ones who have the thoughts of hate.
We live in the land of the offended and a few shouldn't be offended by their own lack of the truth or their own bias. Take the flag down when we quit honoring soldiers who died for their country. Take the flag down when we stop affirmative action, NAACP, Miss Black America, etc. - or don't better yet - we claim we respect others and diversity. So, how does taking the flag down let the truth be told and respect everyone's beliefs. Yes, idiot, crazy, bigots use the battle flag of the confederacy, but they also use the U.S. flag.
Quit being afraid to stand up for what is fair and call for truth in open dialog and consistency. We can not have full healing until we quit catering to one side. Why is there black history month and not yellow, red, white history month? Is that right or fair? I think Martin Luther King was a great man, but why is their a national holiday honoring him only but all the Presidents only get one non-specific day? What about heroes and great people like Salk or Einstein, etc. that do not have a national day. Why can't we just have great Americans day and Martin Luther King be one of those great Americans? Why are not the sensible bigots that call for the flag to be removed not calling for these changes? Why is there a memorial to Martin Luther King on the SC state grounds - is it because we are not good people but sensitive to one group only?
The flag is now a symbol for discovering and talking about truths and healing by having open, fair, equal dialog that can contribute to healing and not one sided bias because are willing to point the biases...

Words words words. Too many youth of today (not all mind you) have little to no idea what words like Heritage, Morals, Honor, Committment really mean. Its not all about "moving forward". Especially when the movement "forward" is actually lateral or backwards. You can thank the current administration for the division of America. Period. Its the democratic way, divide and conquer. Its my opinion and no far left Liberal can take it from me or make me change by trying to throw out guilt trips. Aint happenin.

with being a victim or judging others. THEY are the ones who make us scared to be honest about the past. They are the ones who make us scared that we may slip up and say the wrong thing even if we have good hearts. They are the ones that are irrationally trying to sever a Southerners pride in their culture and instead converting it into shame over racism.
We are at a point in history in which certain words and certain flags are labeled as racist. It no longer matters what people actually believe about race. Choosing safe words and cooperating with groupthink are the only things that matter.

Why this thread has NO LOGIC:
If you remove all of the monuments/buildings/etc that remind us of the past, then only the current generation will remember the past.
If you don't remember or know the past, then you are doomed to repeat the past. Last time I checked, nobody really wants to do that.
Can we forget changing all the building names, tearing down all the monuments, etc and just move on. Let us that actually give a dayum appreciate, honor, respect, and learn from the past. And those who don't give a dayum about a brighter future, just stay stuck in your ignorance. We'll be back to tell you "I told you so".
