And let's face it. If Brent ever wanted to be a head coach, it would be hard to think of a better situation than a program like Oklahoma.
The only potential pitfall is the move to the SEC colliding with their high expectations. The leadership at Oklahoma has already shown they won't be afraid to move on if he isn't getting the job done, including Bob Stoops.

The only potential pitfall is the move to the SEC colliding with their high expectations. The leadership at Oklahoma has already shown they won't be afraid to move on if he isn't getting the job done, including Bob Stoops.
There are a lot of pitfalls with taking over a program regularly in the playoffs as they will not be patient. Especially so for someone who has never been a HC who will no doubt have mistakes as would any new HC. A much better situation would be to take over a program like Texas or USC as they have all the advantages of a blue blood program but had not done squat lately so there is plenty of room to grow.
Another example is taking over for Saban at Bama vs taking over at LSU. Both have every program advantage but one would offer more room for improvement thus a longer leash

Venables possibly leaving aside, whoever takes Oklahoma is in for a big dynamic change when they get to the SEC.
The 2022 recruiting class is shot because Riley is taking all his guys to SoCal, and 2023 is already behind the 8-ball. Without flipping the roster through the portal, they aren't built to play in the SEC. Venables would obviously understand that, but their trenches will need to drastically improve because you can't bully the top half of the SEC the way you can the Big 12. Roster makeup is going to need a big change to stay competitive.

Berry Trammel (sp) said the same thing Monday. They really wanted Shane to come back but what I've heard from SC donor, Shane already told them not interested.
Just reading the tea leaves from Berry's comments, CBV is their top target. Hence my post under bball write-up. Sounds like some in the ou camp want Ruhle because of experience or something. I hope they win out.
Barry switzer wants an offensive minded coach and some were getting ansi over Riley's offensive decline over the last 3 years... But that could just be post Riley sour grapes.
Does lanning have any previous ties to Oklahoma? Still a lot of bad taste over schneliberger and any ou outsiders. I'm concerned.

Matt Connolly said the only "connection" if you want to call it that is Lanning is from Missouri. No previous OU ties.
He was a grad assistant at Bama as recently as 2015, so he's a young, up-and-comer.
It really does sound like the job is Venables' if he wants it. I don't think they'll hire anyone until he says no. That's concerning, because this is an A-plus, top-shelf job. If he says no to this job, then I'll never worry again about him ever leaving Clemson.

As I posted last night, I'll gladly live through a miserable winter to hear him say what he did b4... "Don't want to screw up happy". Personally, I think once the honeymoon was over and Jake and them start spitting out grands, he'd be miserable. He knows if he's here, he'll have all the time he wants to enjoy them. Just hope he's in that mindset.

I've always gotten the impression that he doesn't want to shake hands and kiss babies like a head coach does nowadays (the good ones, at least).
Having his kids here and playing for him has to be a thrill. I would love him to stay because he's done so much for our program but I understand this isn't exactly Middle Tennessee calling

Ruhle is already getting paid a ton of money without the headache of dealing with boosters and recruiting and such. He might want to move back since the season isnt going all that well but would his ego allow such a move? Im not saying he has a large one, just that we all have one large or small and he would be basically saying yeah I cant hack the NFL rebuild.

There's a long list of NFL coaches who failed in their first try, went back to college for awhile and then came back to the NFL and were successful to legendary.

Well, if you heard the interview, then you would have heard how well liked beamer is in Oklahoma by the entire AD staff. Also said if he was still on the staff, he'd probably been promoted to hc already. That's just the Oklahoma way.

There is apparently a LOT of buzz around Oklahoma trying to hire Matt Rhule and bringing Joe Brady with him. Could be a smokescreen...but he's been in several talks today.
This would be a stunner if he got the job

It just doesn't ring the bell of truth for Dabo and Venables to be scouring the entire Midwest, Southwest of the USA! USA! USA! for defensive linemen for Clemson and then Venables goes to OK...Frankly, if it was my child being courted in this manner, i wouldn't let him play for EITHER school...

That is the guy that I would open the checkbook for.. While I'm not saying I won't be V to go anywhere because who would in their right mind? But in My opinion he has given off every indication that being a head coach is not a priority for a multitude of reasons. Matt Campbell on the other hand, comma already has experience as a head coach, CEO figure oh figure and baby kisser yes sir. More important, he has done it and been successful at 1 of the worst historical programs In college football over their history. Add in that he is currently recruiting in that region already eat and to me it's a no brainer. In fact, I don't get how one of the other schools have not made the Mel Tucker contract look miniscule in comparison to get that guy.. There is absolutely there is absolutely no comparison between the job that each of them has done in my opinion.
