I agree that Walt is smart but probably not for the same reason as you do.

Walt is good at having a pulse on what his listeners need to hear. Many radio personalities use the same recipe that Walt uses. He puts emphasis on the talking points he has made that prove true and he down plays the things that he gets wrong. A lot of listeners claim to hate this yet they keep listening.
Either way people tune in because they are hoping to prove he is either right or wrong. Ultimately he doesn't care as long as you keep listening.

Things Walt has done that I must give him credit for include:
Not buying into the SEC bias when everyone else was. (Again this may be because the majority of listeners are Clemson fans but regardless he seems to have gotten that right.)
He is willing to put the work in with watching highlights of recruits that would be of concern to his local audience. (You won't get that with a national show)
But to me the biggest thing he gets right is he knows his audience. (His emphasis is often on college football then college basketball. Clemson, Carolina, Georgia, UNC, and for some reason GA Tech.) He discusses other sports and he comes off as knowledgeable, but his bread and butter is talking local sports.
I think the reason he comes off as knowledgable is because he really is a fan of sports. I honestly believe that he enjoys putting in the work (if you want to call it that) to know what is going on with local sports fans. He uses social media as well as his callers to make his radio show an overall success.

I must admit that his perceived arrogance irritates me from time to time, but for a local show he gets the format right.
