Watching the 1st half of Spring game for the 100th time

May 15, 2022, 10:55 AM

In hopes I'd see the second half finally. I feel like Charlie Brown kicking the football but I digress.

Anyway, I think that DJ did improve. The passes were good. Several drops by WRs. In fact, my biggest take is that we have a serious issue at WR. Ngata did have a nice TD grab from DJ that was called back but he also dropped an easy 20-yard gainer. We have no standouts at that position besides maybe Spector.

Also, I don't see all the hype around Mafah, and he also dropped a pass. I mean Thomas looked just as good to me.

Cade also threw a pick that was dropped by the LB. I think DJ actually did a lot better overall and I think we can win with this cat.

OK, shoot me.

Winning the ACCCG and making the play-offs will be fine with me!

I've been very critical of DJ's play; however

that first half didn't show me he can't win for us but rather quite the opposite.

I hope he does well; I really do. I think our WRs need to step up for whoever is throwing it.

Agree 100%

and I also hope that he works out.

If not, let's hope that the WRs are also working out their timing routes. Last year the timing looked off quite a bit (to me).

I can imagine that's overlooked often by the causal fan, but I agree 1000%.

While DJ had a rough year, I would like to see how he would do with receivers that Tajh, Deshaun and Trevor had at the beginning. The receiver core last year was one of the worst ones we have had in a while

Yeah the real issue may be at WR.

I also thought DJ improved. Some people can’t remove their emotions from it. People are still mad at him, attacking his character, etc.

I think he has some skills. The RPO wasn’t good for him. He didn’t look like be was ready to make any quick reads last year. We’ve tweaked the O, some of it should help us overall as a team. He should be ready mentally this year. If he’s not, we will have to play CK.

I’m pulling for him. I think he could get drafted and CK could get some PT but we will need help from WR. It’s telling that one of our big play guys was a freshman that’s hurt.

I don’t think you get the full effect of Mafah in a scrimmage. He would beat up his teammates. He was my favorite back out of that class. I’m a Mafah fan

Yeah man, I don't get the personal attacks that's insane. I wasn't a big fan of his play last year but you're right, the RPO wasn't his thing.

The guy is thinner and threw well on the run.

I hope you're right about Mafah. I love the old Riggin's style mash back.

Some good points. I don't agree with Spector being a standout. The two Collins receivers have a chance to be pretty good I think.

I had similar thoughts as well.

If we solely focus on DJ’s throws to Ngata, he looked great. When we look at his throws to walk-ons, then he looks like the same DJ from last year. That leads me to believe that he will look just fine with actual D1 WRs to work with.

On top of that, out offensive line was completely outmatched. DJ faced pressure all day and had a couple of walk-ons as his weapons. It’s hard for me to be critical of his performance.

Cade looked pretty good too. I think we can win a conference title with him as well.

I disagree. I would LOVE for DJ to turnonout a monster year, but go back and look at the simple things in the spring game. He misses screens and check down dump passes 80% of the time. He makes the easy things look impossible. I’m not saying this as a casual fan, I have coached and was taught how to read and grade film. I’m sorry, but DJ had as good or better of an OL in that game as CK, and from a grading standpoint he was light years behind CK.

Again, I want DJ to have a monster year, but I don’t see it happening.

Good assessment. IF and it’s a big IF, any two of Beaux/Dacari Collins, Ngata, Williams can develop into 800-900 yard receivers we are gonna be dangerous. We really just need two of them to deliver. Anything else from the other WRs will be gravy. Our 3 headed monster at RB will command attention in the box, which should provide some open passing lanes for DJ. I also think that Davis Allen and Briningstool will be major factors as well.
