Was at the game today...my 2c

Mar 13, 2019, 6:34 PM

Pack fans by far outnumbered our Tiger fans (that or they were just a lot louder)--not sure if it was noticeable on TV but felt like an away game inside the arena.

Thought the Tigers certainly played well enough to win but had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that it would be closer than the first half score indicated (in fact, told an NCState fan next to me not to worry, we'd go cold at some point and it would come down to the last 5 minutes).

I don't know if it's on the coaching for the consistent inconsistency but who else can you blame? I was disappointed in Thomas for his dumb fouls which took him out of the game (as usual) and left it on our perimeter shooting more than even we already tend to rely on and NCState realized that we had no inside game w/out Thomas and pushed their defense to the perimeter.

After all of the Brownell years, sure feels like we know what we're going to get: some close/tough losses, some good wins, and some NCAA Selection Sunday prayer groups. I really like Brownell as a person and think he would make a terrific coach somewhere where he could recruit his type of guys and not have to compete with the Dukes, UVAs, UNC's etc... He clearly is a solid defensive-minded coach but that, alone, won't win in the ACC (look at UVA who plays tremendous defense but who has increased their offensive rankings each year--and look where they are now). With all the talent on this team, I don't understand the offensive struggles and in my mind, that's on Brad. He's simply not a good offensive coach and it shows when our perimeter shots don't fall. It's a shame, because I thought this year would be special (and yes, we were like 10 points away from being in the Dance easily--but that's the point isn't it? We're always "this close" it seems).

Maybe we'll make the Dance and make a run but I really don't have any expectations beyond what we've already witnessed the last 9 years when it comes to basketball.

For what it's worth, those chiding Brownell for not getting a technical at the end, he did chase the ref down at the end of the game only to be pulled back by one of his coaches. He was livid--but I don't hold it against him for not throwing tantrums like most of the other coaches do in the league.

Mark Packer said on his show this afternoon that one word to sum up Clemson basketball this season is disappointment. Clemson had 6 losses in games decided by two points or less. They were 1-10 against Q-1 teams, blown leads, inconsistent shooting, etc. It just seems that this team couldn't get into a consistent rhythm throughout the season. I don't know if it is a coaching thing, a leadership thing, bad luck or mixture of all. I agree with Mark though because this team had the potential of being a possible 23-25 win team and this season was a disappointment.

Thanks for insights

I only disagree with two things
1. His offense ability is not shown or exposed when shots miss. His offense coachi g and prep got the shots to be open. Players got to make shots.

2. We do not have that much talent. The main 3 peaked last year. Only Thomas looks to be slightly improved. Skara has shown most improvement.

The program goals should be above .500 conference record every year, no more than 1 loss out of conference, make semifinals of ACC tournament 3 of every 6 years. You do that with a mentality that you expect to win close games, compete with upper tier teams regularly with no inferiority complex and raise the floor of your program. Just look at the late comers in the ACC - they don’t have the weight of historical failure in the conference postseason and have all pretty much surpassed our record in that tournament already. Gotta have a mental transplant.

I have not commented on coach Brownell because I really have tried to be positive about this team as I thought for once we might break through the NC monopoly.... but today was brutal and sad something is really wrong and it starts at the top. I’m really fed up with basketball.
