WALT DEPTOOLA. I love how he comments on WRs

Nov 28, 2022, 4:05 PM

when the guy doesn't even go to games. He's talking about "separation" (his mantra) when he literally has NO CLUE whats happening in the 2nd and 3rd levels. He's making his WR comments based on what he sees on TV, which is obviously extremely limited. He can't see the field, AT ALL from TV.

Then he also says WRs aren't fighting for 50/50 balls. Bullcrap. The WRs aren't even being given a chance to fight for it because DJ inevitably throws an inaccurate ball. It happened several times just this Saturday. On 1:1, 50/50 balls, DJ missed the area code EVERY TIME.

Walt is just stuck on his 2021 preseason claim that DJ was one of the best QBs in the nation and a 1st round draft pick. Walt was completely wrong about that, but in typical Deptoola fashion, he's incapable of admitting his mistakes.

For anyone who actually sits in the stands and pays attention, WRs are getting separation. Maybe not always the primary guy, but almost every play there's someone free.

DJ is lacking field vision and VERY RARELY buys time and looks over the progressions. The only progression he ever see is the check-down RB or TE, and inevitably there was someone downfield who only needed a semi-accurate pass to make a play.

Walt has no clue. You can't watch TV and see the field, yet in his stubborn all-knowingness he makes claims about what's happening in the 2nd and 3rd levels.

Yeah, Walt, DJ is one of the best QBs in the country. Right. He's only inhibited by "perhaps the country's worst WRs" and "playcalling".

Walt is wrong. He doesn't even go to games.

WRs aren't open when the camera gets to them because the

ball isn't on time. Even the TV announcers can see this.

That's bullcrap. For example, on

Nov 28, 2022, 4:48 PM

DJs INT, it was a terrible throw. The DB was in poor position and all DJ had to do was give the WR a chance.. like throw it shorter or a back shoulder. Instead he way overthrew the WR and the DB who was playing out of position was able to make an easy INT.

Another example, was on our final possession. DJ had a WR with tons of separation running down the middle of the field. It would have put us across midfield with an excellent chance to take the late game lead. Instead DJ threw an overthrown bullet that the WR could barely get a hand on.

Another immediate example is the Cuse game when 6'13" #9, or whatever he is, is wide freaking open. Instead DJ threw it 8 feet over the 6'13" receiver, and it was picked. DJ was benched after that, and he would have been benched against SC after that terrible INT, had there been more time left in the game.

Saying "when the TV switches to the receiver he's covered" or whatever, is not accurate. Are guys always absolutely free? No, nor is that the case for good QBs at every level. Sometimes you need to find another guy, or thread a needle, or at least give the WR a chance. This is what good QBs do every Saturday and Sunday. DJ has been poor in spotting receivers and/or throwing accurately. I mean, really, it's as plain as day, and that's the exact reason the playbook has been scaled back to throws where DJ is more capable of getting it there on time and on target. He struggles reading down the field and then throwing accurately when he does throw and not stand in the pocket like a statue. Along those lines, have you seen DJ moving around in the pocket and buying time when needed? I can't think of a single play on Saturday where I saw that, but I sure saw Rattler doing that as well as seeing the open guys and throwing accurate passes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you may have misread my comment

Nov 28, 2022, 9:06 PM

I agree, DJ can't pass in our offense. He makes a lot of throws in the wrong spot for the situation.

he also can't read. Not the coverage, not the DE, not the route, etc.

He also holds the ball too long and doesn't hit routes at the right time. That was the basis of my comment. Even the knucklehead announcers on TV noticed that this past weekend and said, repeatedly, that if DJ had the ball there in time it would have been a completion.

People love to blame the WRs and yeah we don't have the superstars we once did, but the WRs aren't the problem.

Nov 28, 2022, 4:20 PM

Yea.

I like Walt ok but when he gets stuck on something you can forget trying to get him to see it the other way.

I cut it on for 15 seconds today and he was defending DJ - I cut it straight off.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like his show as well...

Nov 28, 2022, 8:43 PM

but he gets "dug in" on his projection of a player and won't budge despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary-

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here's the thing......

Nov 28, 2022, 4:37 PM

whether you (not you in particular, but the fans) place MOST blame on:
QB or WRs or Playcalling or lack of portal use or what have you...........it boils down to ONE THING and ONE THING ONLY..............COACHING!!!!!

I have not heard ONE SINGLE fan mention an "ISSUE" of this team/program that CAN'T be traced back to COACHING!!!!............Dabo's got a LOT of issues plaguing this program/team that need to be addressed, whether he addresses them or not is a different story..............but it's ALLLLLLL ON HIM RIGHT NOW...........if DJ Sux then they need to get him the heck outta there.........if the WR sux they need to get NEW talent and DEVELOP them better.........if portal is an answer, then use it..............if OC and DC sucks then MAKE THE CHANGE TO BEST IS THE STANDARD.

we'll see if it gets fixed, but we said that last year and here we are having the SAME EXACT PROBLEMS.........and to an extent they're worse and more prominent.

Re: Here's the thing......

Nov 28, 2022, 4:40 PM

Ngata has never been able to get separation.

Ajou Ajou, the same.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks, pheebs. Yep, the OC needs to

Nov 28, 2022, 4:52 PM [ in reply to Here's the thing...... ]

be on the field holding DJs hand, telling to move, where to move, then where to look, then tell him to throw accurately.

The elephant in the room is the QB. Obviously. No coaching, schemes, or playcalling can fix the broken elephant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

point missed again there Stanley......

Nov 28, 2022, 4:57 PM

you simply can't have a reasonable discussion.

THE REASON DJ IS OUT ON THE FIELD IS BECAUSE THE COACHES PUT HIM THERE!!!!!

if he "SUCKS" like you say (and I'm not saying he's good).......then the COACHES/DABO need to sit his tail on the bench..............it's COACHING, COACHING, COACHING!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ever.

Would you like to review?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My name is Tom, or Sir for a clown like you.

Nov 28, 2022, 8:27 PM [ in reply to point missed again there Stanley...... ]

I've given you near irrefutable reason. I never once said the QB sucks, so I'd appreciate it if you'd stop pretending to quote me when you're making it up.

DJ is on the field because he currently the best option to win. Have you seen Cade's 7 for 15 and 85 yard season? The Notre Dame pick epitomizes the growing Cade needs to do. Dabo has shown he won't hesitate to replace a starting QB, IF it's best for the team and gives us a chance to win. Its nor bad coaching to put the best chance out there, even if he has obvious deficiencies.

Only a buffoon would be unable to see this and admit this. Are you a buffoon, pheeble? Considering your ENTIRE post history is contrived disgruntlement with a slew of ignorance, you may just be a buffoon.

Are you ever going to try and let us know what your magic playcall are? We both know you're not capable of doing that, because you don't have a clue how this game works.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, it's a coaching decision to start him for 2 straight seasons....

Nov 28, 2022, 8:39 PM [ in reply to point missed again there Stanley...... ]

Kind of reminds me of little league team where the coach plays his son at QB despite his limitations-

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Was TP the answer last year? Nope.

Nov 28, 2022, 9:02 PM

Is Cade the answer this year? We all hoped he was TL2.0, but he's not.

DJ is starting out of necessity. If neither Cade nor Vizinna can beat out DJ next year, then expect the same crap again.

Fact is, DJ is playing ONLY because we don't have a proven option. If Cade was the best choice, OBVIOUSLY Dabo would have worked him into the starter role.

Nov 28, 2022, 4:49 PM

Walt will defend DJ because he’s been on that “DJ candidate for Heisman” thing since day one. I knew he would throw the WRs and the OL under the bus today. He’s as bad as the coaches.

Re: WALT DEPTOOLA. I love how he comments on WRs

Nov 28, 2022, 5:16 PM

IMO it's a package deal. The entire package is sub-par. With Deshaun and Trevor we lived off 50:50 balls and back shoulder throws. Recall Saban having many fits over the back shoulder throws in those games. DJ and his receiver crews simply CANNOT execute a back shoulder throw. It's a timing throw that takes the QB and the WR's being on the same page. DJ and this group of receivers are practically NEVER on the same page. Deshaun used to talk about how much he worked with receivers on skills like that in the offseason. I wonder if DJ and the current receivers worked together like that? I saw where DJ spent much of his time with QB whisperer guru's out in Cali in the offseason? So...I think we know the answer?

Our receivers now are simply not skilled at getting separation. Walt is right. Yes we have some guys running wide open at times, but often not. Just think back to Sammy, Renfrow, Bryant, Scott and on and on. Those guys got separation often. Williams is the only receiver able to do that now. And guys like Nuke, Sammy and Mike Williams could out-fight defenders and high point and pluck 50:50 balls out of the air. Folks marveled at the sound it made when Sammy plucked balls out of the air. Those receivers were so good at it that it was WAY higher than 50:50 odds. Our receivers now mostly wait for a ball to drop in their basket. That makes a 50:50 ball much less than 50:50 odds. Also, add that DJ often does not throw the ball close enough to on target to allow a receiver a chance. The blame is on QB AND the WR's in my opinion.

The blame game should go to the entire battery. We are simply WAY, WAY less talented at QB and WR now. Blame who you will, but it's on the coaches IMO.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Again, we ARE getting open guys.

Nov 28, 2022, 8:38 PM

I will GUARANTEE you've never sat in the stadium and watched the 2nd and 3rd levels. Guys are getting free, and a good QB would be finding them, or at least giving receivers a chance to catch it. DJ is not succeeding at either.

Have you even once been to a game and focused on the 2nd and 3rd levels? I dont think you have. Youre just parroting Walt. Like Walt, uou arent making this "observation" based on actually warching 2nd and 3rd levels. Guys are getting open, but DJ has a lack of vision, lack of accuracy, and he has an inability to buy time and allow his WRs to work open when there is good coverage at the snap.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's a pot-stirring dipchit

Nov 28, 2022, 7:08 PM

He knows that the vast majority of Clemson fans are fed up with DJU and dismayed with the coaching staff shilling for an underperforming bust at the most important position on the team. He is the radio equivalent of click-bait.

Walt is never ever wrong. Never. Ever. If you don’t believe me call 654roar tomorrow after 3 and he will tell you himself.

Walt's not wrong about the receivers

Nov 28, 2022, 8:56 PM

but he is wrong about DJ. DJ gas a bad game....and has been schizophrenic all season .
