with simple possession in his dorm of less than 28 ounces (or grams whatever it is.) The RA came in, saw beer, called the cops who found a tiny bit of weed.
Do I need an attorney for this?

Of course you need a lawyer, dummy. Going to court on anything other than a minor traffic violation without an lawyer is dangerous.
I know a lawyer who can probably make this go away or at least get the charges reduced to something the boy can do with pretrial solutions. Tmail me.

But with or without a lawyer, nothing is guaranteed. Knowing that, if he gets a heavier penalty, are you going to beat yourself up for not getting a lawyer?

Without a lawyer, PTI is hard to get the court to accept, regardless of circumstances. Lawyer up, and you'll be fiiiiiiiiiiinnnee

the school court as well. The school court does not allow for them to have an attorney. They will pressure them to plead guilty to everything. My daughter got caught for underage drinking and the head of the school court tried to get her to plead to weed. She was adamant that she was not doing the weed part and he finally dropped that part. The criminal part is just to get into your pocket book, a money ripoff. The school part is bullsh*t. If they charge you it stays on your record the entire time you are in school, you can appeal to have it taken off your record when you graduate, you are ineligible for many jobs and positions such as leading tours etc which is a big deal. I don't get why they want everyone over there to have a record, but that is what they push. Like I say the criminal part they will let him plead and do PTI but watch the school part because it is all one sided and guilty as charged with no defense. The code of conduct is on line which you should read. Instead of hiring an attorney you should hire someone to beat the crap out the RA for being such as puss.

go away or get out of hand. A lawyer can make sure the latter doesn't happen.
I am in NO way criticizing the RA here - maybe he/she was doing exactly what Clemson requires in whatever the situation was, and a 20 year old RA who needs the job can easily feel stuck between a rock and hard place - but it sounds like an over reaction. I was one, a thousand years ago, and if I called the cops, or even wrote an RV, for every illegal thing I knew was happening the Clemson police couldn't keep up. Very good kids would color outside the lines once in a while, and you just had to figure out a better way of handling it than walking the plank.
On the other hand, your child might look back on this as the best thing that happened to him/her. Took a moment to ask the Boss to work it out that way.

I am no legal dude but would assume contacting a lawyer would be prudent. I imagine most lawyers can tell you if this is a big deal or not - but they will need to know exactly how much weed your son had in his possession.
A bigger issue, if I may, is the fact your son had an illegal drug in his room. At some point, he or someone he knows bought the weed which is an illegal act and I surely hope you don't write this off as a "boys will be boys". I understand that a lot of folks don't think weed is "that bad" but I've personally seen the cruel results of the lives ruined by the illegal drug trade in Mexico, Honduras, and other countries in South America.
I was also a Battalion Commander of an Army training unit for two years and had some 10,000 soldiers come through my unit for training - most of which were between the ages of 18 and 22. These Soldiers were only 10 weeks removed from being civilians, many of which had just graduated high school. Unfortunately, we caught a bunch (well over 500) doing drugs (urinalysis) and I can tell you that in almost every circumstance, weed was almost always accompanied by cocaine. I'm not saying your son is into that stuff or weed for that matter, but if I were in your shoes I would have a nice long discussion on this as we found the sources selling the weed were also providing cocaine and worse. Then again, none of this is any of my business and I'm sure you will handle this as you see fit...

we couldn't have microwaves in our room. The RA couldn't move anything to inspect us so all you had to do was get a cover for the microwave and you were fine. Our RA would come down, do an inspection, clear us, and then come back 30 minutes later with a bag of popcorn to have it popped.

Aaron Angell. Law office is right past downtown. Free consultation nice young guy who has gotten many many a kid off the hook. Generally have to do some sort of awareness course and some community service.

We've all been there. Half the students in any college has had to take one. Their parents normally don't find out because it doesn't go on your record with the class. It's also a good spot to meet girls that are down to party fyi.
