Vietnam - Dirty tricks

May 13, 2021, 9:35 PM

Not withstanding the normal trip wires to set off explosives buried in the trails, land mines in the roads, and things like punji sticks hidden in the grass, we were warned a couple of times about newly discovered dangers. The VC had started putting explosives inside Zippo lighters and arming them so they would explode when opened. We heard that they would leave them where they would be easily found and some GI's had lost hands. Another trick we were warned about was them taking the detonators from smoke grenades and placing them into American-made fragmentary grenades. The problem with this is that when the pin is pulled on the smoke grenades, there is no delay in detonation once the grenade leaves your hand - having a regular grenade blow up as soon as you release it would be deadly. Never encountered any of those but we did see a couple of the lighters after being warned.

I never saw any either, nor were we warned about them. But I guarantee you if one of my Marines saw one they would pick it up. For goodness sakes, one of them picked up a 105 HE round that was laying beside a trail that we used to go down and check culverts on Highway one for mines. Luckily it wasn't booby trapped or a couple of my men would have been gone. To make matters worse, after a pretty good butt chewing from me, when he went to crimp the blasting cap on the fuse, he used the fuse cutter hole rather than the cap crimper and cut the cap half in two. After another butt chewing, he finally got the C4 on the round and we blew it in place ..... surprised he didn't want to stand next to it and watch it explode. The sad part was this guy was a Corporal (E-4) and had been in country for almost a year!
